Gender/trans and the next government

The Lib Dems and Greens are promising full gender self-ID, including non-binary identities. Labour is more vague, saying that it would “modernise, simplify, and reform” the Gender Recognition Act, while also promising to support the “implementation of the single sex exceptions in the Equality Act”.

The Conservatives say that, if they were re-elected, they would introduce primary legislation to clarify that the protected characteristic of sex in the Equality Act means biological sex.

Policy analysts Murray Blackburn MacKenzie say that the most straightforward way to make the Equality Act clear would be to disapply Section 9 of the Gender Recognition Act from the Equality Act, perhaps by an amendment to either one. Section 9 is the part that sets out that a gender-recognition certificate changes a person’s sex “for all [legal] purposes” other than the listed exceptions.

As gender analysts Sex Matters says, The next government will face ongoing questions about issues of sex and gender. It will become increasingly impossible to ignore that these concern women’s rights, freedom of speech and child safeguarding, and are not merely a matter of “trans rights” – that is, of interest only to a tiny minority with no impact on anyone else.

There is a wider choice in this election though; it seems like most areas have 6 candidates from parties who are likely to win a number of seats (Green, Labour, SDP, Lib Dem, Tories, Reform). So whereever you stand on the left-right spectrum there is an alternative party to pick if you don't like Labour or Tory.

What a choice...

Green, Labour, Lib Dem: anti-women, anti-safeguarding, anti-science.

SDP: muddled, pro-biology but also pro changing legal sex and pro medicalising beliefs.

Reform, Tory: pro-biology, but also pro-racism and anti-welfare.

I understand that Keir Starmer is woolly on the trans issue because he has a teenage daughter who believes she is a boy. So on a personal level he would be compromised with this matter.

Perfect28 · 17/06/2024 07:40

But the tories have got us to where we are? You really want more? You trust this bunch of liars?

dougalfromthemagicroundabout · 16/06/2024 22:30

Agree.

We've seen how fast women's rights have gone backwards in other parts of the world - Iran and Afghanistan, for example.

This could happen here. Of course it could, anyone who says otherwise is deluded. Women haven't even had the vote for very long in historical terms. Women being an underclass without rights is the norm, we have to fight hard to stop this country reverting to that norm.

And beyond the women's rights and child safeguarding issues, there's the issue of trust.

If politicians are willing to lie about something as fundamental as biological sex in order to gain power, they'll lie about anything: gravity, the earth being flat, evolution, climate change. Anything. Any politician who says that not only women have cervixes / some women have a penis is demonstrating that they're willing to lie about anything to appease powerful lobby groups and to gain power. So how can they be trusted? If they say any man who says he's a woman is literally a woman in all ways then how are we supposed to trust them on anything else?

Let's take a hopefully hypothetical example: if there's another pandemic, do you want someone who says that in charge? It's highly likely that any new virus may affect the sexes differently, as covid did. How are you supposed to believe 'stay home / don't go and visit your dying relatives' is the absolute best option from anyone who also says some women have a penis? It's undermining to the whole of democracy and structure of government.

All of this ^

Genuine question - how do you know this?

BezMills · 17/06/2024 08:05

the candidate lists are all final, so we should all be able to find out what's on our menu.
I've got a cracking young man for greens, very active as a council member and generally the sort of person I'd like to vote for as a person. I think he'd do well as an MP.
Next we have our sitting Tory with a solid majority (kind of a party man, spends more time bumming up his social media profile and trying to be popular in the party than looking out for us)
Labour have a great local guy, I know personally, and I think he's worth my vote (regardless of the party and leadership being very disappointing on FWR).
Then we have the libs, completely standard, genderwoo up the wazoo, no chance.
Finally we have Reform for the BREXIT and Farage fans, and AFD who seem to be absolute lunatics of the BNP / EDL flavour with added antivax flavour.

For me it would normally be a straight choice between Labour and Greens and rather a tactical vote. I've sworn on the facebooks for everybody to see, I'd never vote Tory and I meant that.

So, it's not too difficult a decision for me, in the end.

Floisme · 17/06/2024 08:18

I understand Keir Starmer's children are minors and I really do object very strongly to these repeated attempts to bring them into the argument.

And before anyone starts trying to justify it, I'm not interested in what Starmer might have said himself or in cod analysis of his motivations. We don't have to do this.

We're a parenting website so do we care about children's safeguarding and privacy or not?

Floisme · 17/06/2024 08:30

Oh and another thing, you (general you) can stick your lectures about the Tories where the sun doesn't shine. I don't vote Conservative and never have but Labour do not have a divine right to my vote.

I've written to my Labour candidate, explained that I've voted Labour all my life but wanted some reassurance that they would stand up for women's spaces, and they've not even bothered replying. So take that up with them. I'll be voting for an independent candidate.

My views are very simple. I want my 3 children to be able to live in a world that isn’t topsy-turvy. To indoctrinate them into believing they can choose to be whatever sex they want, is abuse.

Males that reject being men don’t miraculously become women. They just become man-rejectors.
For some reason, I can grudgingly accept that a woman might want to escape the shitty role society places on them and they might choose to redefine themselves as men. They still can’t opt out of their sex.

I read something recently that describes the importance of woman as the backbone of families and communities. They provide care, support, and nurturing to their families and are essential to the development of children. Women also play a significant role in community building.

Women’s empowerment and the promotion of equality are essential for the development of a just and equitable society. Empowering women leads to improved health outcomes, increased economic growth, and poverty reduction. However, women continue to face numerous challenges that hinder their ability to contribute fully to society. Addressing these challenges requires a concerted effort from individuals, communities, and governments. Only by working together can we create a more just and equitable world for everyone.

I will not be voting for any political party that doesn’t respect my rights.

And this.

If this is true and this is compromising his ability to think rationally about this issue, he should have recognised this as a conflict of interests and stepped down as party leader.

If that is so, then he of all people should be on the ball ( no pun intended) about the mental health issues, social contagion and damaging future health outcomes surrounding this issue. Not to mention the safety issues of a female sexed body in male spaces and vice versa.

ufdcnh2564 · 17/06/2024 09:00

I emailed my Tory candidate who gave a wonderful answer about protecting women's safe spaces and safeguarding children. Not even a reply from Labour or Lib Dems. I take this as they consider me a bigot and don't want my vote. OK then...

So the question is: Can we survive another 4yrs of Tory leadership until Gender Ideology is fully revealed to be an extremist cult and (hopefully) out of fashion by then? Will we be safe then? but meanwhile the NHS will be dead...

All I see is an attack on women's rights from all sides.

But the tories have got us to where we are? You really want more? You trust this bunch of liars?

And yet we actually have done much better than eg Australia & Canada (edited to add: in this area) with their left-leaning administrations. The ‘they should have fixed this while they had the chance’ argument is just so lacking in understanding of the historical evolution of this madness, and how it has progressed in other countries.

I think the only sane response to this is to quiz your local candidates as far as you can. Make it really clear that this determines your vote. If they get enough pushback, maybe they’ll get it. If most of the mp’s in the next parliament properly understand the implications for women’s rights and child safeguarding, maybe the Labour leadership will have a hard time getting their self-id-lite policy passed

AIstolemylunch · 17/06/2024 09:26

How can you slef indentify into a non binary identity? We're all bloody non bianry if the only criteria is 'object to harmful sex stereotypes' The lunatics have taken over the asylum.

Mycatsmudge · 17/06/2024 09:31

I have an Indian colleague who accepts when she goes to India she never goes out by herself due to the realistic threat of male intimidation and violence. I don’t want my daughters and nieces to live in a future society under the same threats so this will be a major consideration which party I decide to vote for.

If Labour had been in power when the Scottish Government tried to bring in self ID, would it have been stopped?

Wideskye · 17/06/2024 09:38

Haven't the Toties been in Government with a large majority whilst all this has been going on?

Just as well, really. If Labour had been in power we'd probably have self ID already by now.

Yes, it's bad now but it would probably be a lot worse under Labour.

illinivich · 17/06/2024 10:46

The tory party only seem to spouting this now its election time, they having been saying they know what a woman is, but carry on regardless to allow men in our spaces

This is not true. They commissioned the Cass review and have told all publicly funded organisations to have single sex toilets, well before this election.

Ive never voted tory, i think some Tory MPs are as committed to trans ideology as most Labour MPs, and they could be doing far more, but the idea that its election talking point is not true.

But if they make it an election point, isnt that a good thing? It gives every party an opportunity to explain how they will exclude men from womens spaces.

We don’t actually know this about Starmer but I think anyone with teenage children or in fact young people under 35 in their family can be in trouble on this one. Even if the young people aren’t themselves gay/trans etc. One risks becoming viewed as the racist uncle at the Christmas party.

I believe that Starmer has adolescents at home who will influence his thinking, has a party where very many MPs and members (including gay ones) support ‘trans rights’, and will himself probably conflate homosexuality with gender, and sex with gender. He will be keen never to repeat the mistakes of the past in relation to homosexuality.

If he’s met trans friends of his children he’ll think that they are all sweet, gender-norm-rejecting kids, and possibly a few inoffensive older chaps like Jan Morris. (Yes, I know that Morris’s children say that we was anything but inoffensive.)

He is focusing on the top 10-15 issues that both need to be addressed urgently and that people care about, as shown by focus groups etc. This issue hasn’t come up yet much during the election, probably confirming their view that it’s not sufficiently significant as a vote-loser for them to devote too much energy on.

Women are going to have a whole new battle on their hands on gender identity ideology if Labour wins.

Having said that, I don’t believe that Tory policies are better for women and children overall, and that Labour’s will be. Surestart, for one.

I’m sorry but the Greens are almost worse than any other party on gender identity issues; see, for example, their influence on the SNP, and how they have brought that party to its knees in Scotland with the gender recognition/self-ID and other policies.
