Why are ITV lying about transmen in prisons?

Just watched the latest episode of Emmerdale. Matty, the transman character, has been in court charged with a stabbing, and at the end is shown being transported to a men's prison surrounded by jeering men who will clearly be preying on them at the earliest opportunity.

But why has this been written into the plot? It simply isn't true that transmen are housed in male prisons - precisely because it isn't safe for them! Even the most basic research would have told the scriptwriters that this doesn't happen so what are they playing at? Looks like the latest attempt by soap writers to paint trans people as eternal victims. I seem to recall Hollyoaks had a transwoman in a female prison being beaten up by the "nasty" women - something that has never ever actually happened! Though the reverse has happened plenty of times and has been studiously ignored Angry

The first thing to note is that the numbers are tiny. According to this Telegraph piece on official data, there are 225 male-born transgender prisoners and 43 female-born transgender prisoners. These figures don't include prisoners with a GRC - apparently there are 13 of those in total.

The Telegraph story doesn't say where the female-born (ie trans men) prisoners are housed. But I don't think the Emmerdale writers have thought this through. Surely the central plank of transgender philosophy is that you are who you say you are? That if you are born female, and identify as a trans man, then you are a trans man and should be treated in every respect the same as those born male. If the character is a trans man, then surely they would be delighted to have their gender identity validated by being sent to a men's prison.

Alison, remember that only a small minority of transpeople ever bother to get a GRC. So the vast majority could pop back into their birth gender any time they like.

We are all still waiting for JK Rowling to post about this horrific hateful violent attack.

Why?

This is an everyday story of male violence. I’m sorry for the boy who was attacked, but male-on-male violence is sadly common. One of the many reasons we don’t want men in women’s spaces.

@Christinapple All you've done by posting that link is highlight male on male violence in toilets. Was that your intention?

Why should JKR post about it? Why aren't you asking a prominent male person to comment on male violence in men's toilets?
Why aren't you calling out to all males to accept gender non-conforming males in their toilets however they identify?

If it's relevant, a trans-teen girl used a male bathroom. She received a homophobic slur and was punched in the jaw causing her teeth to "explode".

A disgusting attack. Whilst it is male on male violence I don’t feel that description alone considers the specific vulnerability of trans-identified males and females to transphobic and/or homophobic attacks. Most of us support the addition of gender neutral single user toilets to keep trans-identified people safe. It is only that their safety should not come at the expense of the safety and dignity of women and girls. I also don’t see why JK Rowling is to blame for this? She has always made clear her opposition to discrimination and violence against trans-identified people.

It's funny how women have the power to make men assault transwomen but at the same time not have the power to stop them assaulting women. It's almost like it's not actually women that make violent men violent and it's just convenient to blame us.

It's no. 1 in the Rules of Misogyny - Women are responsible for what men do.

A man assaulted another man in Minnesota and you are waiting for JKR to comment?
