Why are ITV lying about transmen in prisons?

Just watched the latest episode of Emmerdale. Matty, the transman character, has been in court charged with a stabbing, and at the end is shown being transported to a men's prison surrounded by jeering men who will clearly be preying on them at the earliest opportunity.

But why has this been written into the plot? It simply isn't true that transmen are housed in male prisons - precisely because it isn't safe for them! Even the most basic research would have told the scriptwriters that this doesn't happen so what are they playing at? Looks like the latest attempt by soap writers to paint trans people as eternal victims. I seem to recall Hollyoaks had a transwoman in a female prison being beaten up by the "nasty" women - something that has never ever actually happened! Though the reverse has happened plenty of times and has been studiously ignored

I can’t say I watch emmerdale but I don’t think that is accurate for all trans-identified females. Some use gender neutral toilets (the single user ones) for fear of assault. They may be trying to live as men but many recognise they are female and at risk.

Of course it’s in Scotland. God help her. Women in prison are already highly vulnerable and so are trans-identified females. But sure let’s throw her in with violent men.

I'm sure I read on here that one transman was sent to a men's prison, and she was quickly removed for her own safety.

I've found the figures for March 2023, the most recent available, for Scotland.
12 trans women in the men’s estate
7 in the women’s estate
1 trans man in the men’s estate
3 trans men in the women’s estate.

The Scottish Prison Service has a Policy for the Management of Transgender People in Custody which I can't link to but which you can find by searching for the title.

If he had been asking to mutilate his genitalia then they’d have been encouraging him. Unwell people often commit self harm, whether as a coping mechanism or because they cannot recognise it. However, with regard to the Emmerdale storyline, it is nonsense. A transman would not have been sent straight to a men"s prison in England, but to the women's estate.

All the way through this trans/Matty storyline Matty, previously Hannah, has been treated as male, Matty became a son to Moira, a husband to Kerry and described as a 'top bloke' and a 'hot guy'. Now Matty is clearly being viewed as female by Mum Moira and wife Kerry.
So transphonic! I think the script writers have got themselves into a bit of a pickle now.

Yes they're wrong, and presumably they're trying to make everyone feel sorry for the transman.

In reality they're yelling from the tree tops that transmen are women and therefore transwomen are men. And that it is the male sex who represent the danger.

I doubt it's deliberate, it's probably confused.

Emmerdale scriptwriters: Look at our new crusading storyline about how poor trans Matty is thrown to the mercy of a baying mob in a male prison! Trans people are the most oppressed ever!

Sensible people on MN: << check facts >>. Actually, in England transmen are by default sent to female prisons and are only transferred to the male estate at their own request and even then only after an extensive risk assessment process.

Latest news on Matty in the clink from last night's episode is reported phone conversation where they were staying in their cell and refusing to use the showers - now why could that be???

If it's relevant, a trans-teen girl used a male bathroom. She received a homophobic slur and was punched in the jaw causing her teeth to "explode".

Male on male violence is a problem, that doesn't mean that all the males who are at risk should be in the ladies toilets. It's horrible that this person was attacked but that isn't the fault of women.
