FWR : What Are Your Plans for Election Day (if any)?

BezMills · 07/06/2024 06:24

Note : this thread is not for telling other people how to vote. Plenty other threads for this. This thread is to tell us what your plans are for 4 July.

Do you have plans already? Would you be staying up late? Any memorable election days from the past?

I'll start
I cannot wait for election day!
I've got it all laid out. Dawn swim, see nipper off to school, day of working from home office, cook dinner for my family, off to the gym for back-to-back classes, quick post-gym dip to cool off.
Then up the community centre for my dinner, a refreshing beverage, and my VOTE.
Then I'm going home to stay up late watching the results rolling in.
It's going to be GRATE. Up the democracy!

Im a bit put out actually

i am working an hour away all day so wont be able to vote til late but thats not the issue

the original plan would be to vote with dd and ds2 as its their first times and then stay up very late potentially all night with ds2, chocolate etc

but bloody sunak has called it two days before ds1 gets married and on friday we get the venue from 12 to decorate and get all the food and chairs and table clothes and stuff 😭

so no staying up too late or i will want to kill anyone who doesn’t put the tealight holder on the table in the right way

BezMills · 07/06/2024 08:10

ooft, bladdy Sunak! I feel your pain @RufustheFactualReindeer - that's a massive pain in the arse.

It is very odd timing for a GE... 2019 was December and 1992 was April - other than that the recent ones have all been 1st or second Thursday in May or June. I rather suspect he was told to "just get it over with" by the suits.

I'll probably be flicking through some holiday brochures.

I'll probably be flicking through some holiday brochures.

Lol I would too if I could, Rishi. 😄

Neverstophulaing · 07/06/2024 08:14

I had no idea people made plans for election days! It’s a totally normal day except I need to find 5 mins to nip out and vote. 🤷‍♀️

StellaOlivetti · 07/06/2024 08:16

I will be working as a poll clerk in my local polling station! I can’t wait, it’s going to be fun.

RufustheFactualReindeer · 07/06/2024 08:23

Ds2 is applying to be a counter i think

thanks for the sympathy bez people who don’t do stuff right on the friday are already in danger but me being tired would make it so much worse 😀

Cosmosforbreakfast · 07/06/2024 09:46

I'll vote before I go to work and keep my fingers crossed. Regular day otherwise.

JohnnyRememberMe · 07/06/2024 09:53

I haven't yet decided if I'll vote, or spoil my ballot.

I'm off to an election party in the evening, and expect to stay up overnight to see the result.

Step · 07/06/2024 10:00

Work, come home vote, family meal opeing the first bottle of wine. Chamagne on ice by 4am I should be very happy and sozzled with my BFF and hubby.

BezMills · 07/06/2024 10:05

It's pretty much my normal Thursday with added voting, then staying up to see the analysis and results, at least as long as I can keep my eyes open.

I will be abroad visiting my family, feeling incredibly envious of my friend who gets to vote THREE times in this election because he will be a proxy for myself and DH. I will also be trying desperately to find a channel i can stay up and watch the results come in on.

Cazpar · 07/06/2024 10:09

I'll be up early to vote before work, then at work all day with everyone glued to the ongoing commentary, then stay up as late as I can watching the results but will probably fall asleep by midnight.

RebelliousCow · 07/06/2024 10:09

I've already had enough of the election. I just want it over and done with. I will go out to the poling station, though, to spoil my ballot. Then I'm going to try to avoid watching any of it on the news. I'll go to bed as normal, and then look at the results in the morning.

My mind is focused on what still needs to be done to roll back trans madness and hold the fire to Labour's feet. I've become more interested in long term patterns and movements in society, and in the collective, than in the nitty gritty of this long running, party political, soap opera.

NotTooOldPaul · 07/06/2024 10:16

I will go to the poling station at 6:00am and unlock it and check the heating is working. When the poling staff arrive I will unlock the cupboard where the ballot boxes are stored.
I will vote at 07:00 and go home but I will be on-call all day.
I will lock up after poling finishes and then watch TV most of the night to see the results.

BezMills · 07/06/2024 10:32

thanks to PP who are working at the polling stations, really important job.

I was chatting to one of the workers at the recent PCC elections. She had been doing the job for 45 years! I wouldn't mind doing it, when I eventually ditch the full time work lark.

DH and I will already have voted because we have postal votes. We were both just saying that we miss the "ceremonial feeling" of going to the polling station, but overall we prefer having the postal votes (started doing them because we were worried about missing an election due to travel or illness).

On July 4 we'll probably stay up until the exit polls, then wake up early the following morning. I am torn between really looking forward to the departure of the Tories, and feeling distinctly unenthusiastic* at all the replacement options.

I think the people who volunteer at the polling stations and who do the counting are marvellous!

*extreme understatement

artant · 07/06/2024 14:35

I’ll go to vote along with my very elderly mother. She’d been considering gaming the system by getting a postal vote so she wouldn’t need to stay alive for the election (she’s been saying things like “oh, I don’t think I’ll still get alive next Tuesday!” for years now) but has decided that she wants to vote in person. I’ll stay up to watch the results but it won’t be a night of unbridled optimism, 1997 style, and it’ll just be me in front of the telly waiting for a Portillo moment rather than booze, take away and a few friends.

BezMills · 07/06/2024 15:23

A few on my Portillo list have already decided not to stand.

A few on my Portillo list have already decided not to stand.

Yes, it’s a shrinking list. Jeremy Hunt and Grant Schapps are still prime candidates though. And Lis Truss would be ideal.

Shortfatsuit · 07/06/2024 18:11

I'm working on election day but have taken the following day off so that I can stay up and watch the results that night.

VestPantsandSocks · 07/06/2024 18:13

I will be in New York celebrating Independence Day 😁

I will do a postal vote before I go 😊

shams05 · 07/06/2024 18:16

Get up a little later than normal cos kids don't have to go to school, so 7 instead of 6:30.
Get teen D's up to look after the younger two whilst I go to work.
Come back at 12 and take them with me to polling station before stopping off at the park.
I feel sorry for schools who've had to rearrange an array of things because of the unexpected closure.
Dds school have had to rearrange two sports days, reception moving up day and nursery home visit days.

Sausagenbacon · 07/06/2024 19:09

I've been invited to an election night party by a lovely (labour) friend, watching the results come in.
I'll just have to stay fairly sober to I don't start voicing my concerns about labour.
