This may seem like a small thing.

But we've had so many stories about books by gc women hidden by Waterstones staff over the past few yeyearsclaimed to not be in stock, etc, the fact they have openly tweeted about 'the women who wouldn't wheesht' is a heartening step back towards reality.

Copy bought this morning. It was in fact on fairly prominent display, but, not for the first time, I walked right past it as I strolled around the shop.

It’s outrageous the way staff in Waterstones try and influence what we buy. I’ve noticed how they turn certain books to face the customer, and seem to hide others.

lcakethereforeIam · 03/06/2024 15:44

😊I've got my copy. Front and centre in the non fiction hardbacks. Was served by a nice young man with a Scottish accent. The book was the first purchase I put in my gerbil tote.

Was also a little cheaper than Amazon, £5 off!

Argh I meant fascist not racist

Are you sure you weren't referring to those racist lesbians (of all races) who won't have sex with anyone with a penis (of any race)?

Sorry, accidental double post!

There has been absolute RAGE on Twitter from TRAs about this - in The Holy Month Of Pride, no less!

It’s unsurprising FW is insisting grassroots women’s orgs are funded by overseas cash etc. FW not only expects people to believe FW is a woman but behaves appallingly if they don’t accept FW’s view of FWself. Because FW spends their existence literally living a lie & demanding others validate it, naturally they assume others are incapable of honesty. FW also doesn’t understand female homosociality, not being female. The way in which feminist networks are built & function would thus naturally be impossible for FW to conceptualise &/or comprehend.

Looks like Fred has done a red pen take on it. I’m sure the authors are quaking at his no-doubt scathing critique.

PepeParapluie · 04/06/2024 21:11

I would’ve swerved Waterstones previously but have bought my copy from there after this change of direction from them, as I want to show them this is what sells!

It's here if anyone wants to read it (sadly red pen wasn't used to write on the book).

fascist, racist-whatever, were it. Imagine this happening even two years ago? Tide is definitely turning.

This.

Oh that made me laugh! Mwahahahahahahah! How dare anyone on their holy parade eh?

Bought my copy today in a Glasgow Waterstones! Also bought a book about the Greek goddess Hera, so I'll read them both one after the other 😁

I don't really pretend to understand what the main issue is here, but as an ex-Waterstones employee I can confirm the head office buying team are top tier trend chasers and will fill every shop with books that try to satisfy the cries of the loudest currently outraged group.

I worked in a very middle class market town Watestones for a number of years, and our customers just wanted Jeffrey Archer and Lee Child novels but we were repeatedly forced to try and hand sell the latest LGBTG@///££ debut novel that everyone has already forgotten about.

Yes the issues are valid but not everyone wants them in every media they consume all the time.

The entire book industry has been captured, from top to bottom.

A friend of mine who works for a company that produces books told me a couple of years back that her management were desperate to snag a “trans” writer.

She also has close links to publishers, and told me that unless you were writing strictly genre fiction, it was near impossible to get a contract as a new author unless you had a massive audience or were in one of the heavily promoted minority groups. Boring old white women had to have something very attractive on offer.

The book sellers and libraries have been on the same bandwagon.

If Waterstones are changing tack, that does give me some hope that things may be starting to swing back. There’s only so long a business can survive while giving huge advances to men from Malaga airport for books about their genitalia, which of course only industry luvvies will read.

ArabellaScott · 17/06/2024 07:49

The wheels on that bandwagon are starting to look very shoogly.

I think there's quite a bit of re-thinking going on. It appears (who'd a thought it) that some of this new 'be kind' stuff is very anti-capitalist, A lot of capitalists are now realising that in order to make money, they have to sell stuff.

Some, are getting their thinking hats on and discussing spread sheets

borntobequiet · 17/06/2024 08:39

Waterstones’ behaviour on this made me a regular at my local bookshop and local library. I sometimes browse there, but then order a book I like from one of those two other places. It’s saved me money overall.

If a book isn't enjoyable / interesting / inspiring to read then people won't buy them. Publishers used to know this but now......
