This may seem like a small thing.

But we've had so many stories about books by gc women hidden by Waterstones staff over the past few yeyearsclaimed to not be in stock, etc, the fact they have openly tweeted about 'the women who wouldn't wheesht' is a heartening step back towards reality.

Yes and despite the usual wails about racists and feeling unsafe and generally being big meanies

They haven’t deleted it

nothingcomestonothing · 02/06/2024 21:40

Oh I need some new books - Waterstones it is

Theeyeballsinthesky · 02/06/2024 21:49

Argh I meant fascist not racist

user8800 · 02/06/2024 21:51

Hmmmm
I can shop there again!

Mytholmroyd · 02/06/2024 21:54

Excellent news!

fascist, racist-whatever, were it. Imagine this happening even two years ago? Tide is definitely turning.

Given how captured publishing / book selling has been by the trans extremists, it's a relief to see freedom of speech in action. And fancy people moaning about books they don't agree with being highlighted during "pride month".
Toddler tantrums every time.

FionnulaTheCooler · 02/06/2024 22:09

I'm planning on going to Waterstones tomorrow to pick up a book for a father's day present, I'm sure a copy of the offending purple book will find it's way into my basket too.

ThreeWordHarpy · 02/06/2024 22:22

It could well be that Waterstones has noticed which books actually sell and make them money, rather than a “change in faith”. Still gratifying to see though, whatever the reason behind it.

Myalternate · 02/06/2024 22:31

One comment says….
‘And many of the essay authors threaten women with vindictive lawsuits in order to silence women’

What do they mean?

lcakethereforeIam · 02/06/2024 23:03

Haven't JKR and Joanna Cherry had to take or threaten suits against libellous tras and/or their death threats? Backwards world.

I'm hoping to get to a Waterstones tomorrow to see if I can get a copy. I'm feeling a little happier about handing them my money.

duc748 · 02/06/2024 23:20

I'll do the same! As noted, good to hear, whatever the motives.

WallaceinAnderland · 02/06/2024 23:48

I'll be popping into my local Waterstones.

FrothyCothy · 03/06/2024 00:59

Was on prominent display in our local one yesterday. I didn’t even have to do my usual bookshelf shuffle to get it there.

Yes, I agree. Our local branch had several copies piled on a table right next to the entrance on Saturday. No rainbow books in sight.

ArabellaScott · 03/06/2024 07:43

Hearing a few stories about TWWWW being on prominent display. I wonder if there has been a decision made by head office, or is this reflects individual stores?

bilgewater · 03/06/2024 07:49

Will go and have a look in my local (London suburban high street) branch later. I think the individual shop managers have quite a lot of freedom on what they display, so we shall see.

RainWithSunnySpells · 03/06/2024 09:17

FW isn't very happy.

Well they've changed their tune. Hope this is the same in all branches.

They've put it on their Insta, too.

It does seem that business have sensed the change of direction on all this and perhaps they're hopping off the bandwagon before the wheels finally fall off it.

Maybe it's a cynical move, maybe it's a sigh of relief that they don't have to kowtow to the Wokerati any more but either way it's a good thing.

IsadoraQuagmire · 03/06/2024 11:57

Yes, @SidewaysOtter maybe it's dawning in them that they're not on the "right side of history" after all! 😏

duc748 · 03/06/2024 12:01

And that if 'woke' means anything, it's surely not book-burning (literal or metaphorical).

alliwantforchristmasis50k · 03/06/2024 12:55

I don't really pretend to understand what the main issue is here, but as an ex-Waterstones employee I can confirm the head office buying team are top tier trend chasers and will fill every shop with books that try to satisfy the cries of the loudest currently outraged group.

I worked in a very middle class market town Watestones for a number of years, and our customers just wanted Jeffrey Archer and Lee Child novels but we were repeatedly forced to try and hand sell the latest LGBTG@///££ debut novel that everyone has already forgotten about.

Yes the issues are valid but not everyone wants them in every media they consume all the time.
