Feminism: Sex and gender discussions

Ask your general election candidates what a woman is: results

I have decided to ask all major parties in my constituency how they define a woman, particularly with regard to women in sport and prisons.

My constituency (currently, subject to borders changing) is Aylesbury Vale.

Conservative: Rob Butler - no reply. This doesn't surprise me because he's a useless tosser who only ever turns up to stuff being opened and has never answered a single email I have sent.

Labour: Laura Kyrke-Smith - replied! She says, "I define a woman as someone who has female sex at birth or defines herself as a woman.
This piece by Annelise Dodds is a good summary of where Labour stands on trans rights more broadly."

Weasel words in my opinion, but useful to know where she stands. We are a (ugh) Tory safe seat here, but if anyone can challenge it, it would only be Labour.

Anyone else have any assurances or otherwise from their local candidates - and where are you (if you are happy saying)?

Labour will lead on reform of transgender rights – and we won’t take lectures from the Tories | Anneliese Dodds

We will modernise, simplify and reform gender recognition law. Our policies won’t please everyone but we will do what’s right

I emailed my Lib Dem candidate this morning - heard back within two hours, saying sex and gender are different, single- sex spaces should be protected and "no matter what your gender it does not trump your sex". He also referenced his undergraduate degree in biology. 😊 Don't know if he'll hold out against the party when it comes to it but I was impressed by the straight answer and how swiftly it came!

@Christinapple have you bothered to read any of her essays? I'll hazard a guess and say no.

Don't need to, her twitter postings as well as what she likes/reposts/follows says it all.

-Snide comments about a trans football manager to her 14M followers, resulting in targeted trans woman receiving abuse

-Never responds to the people in her twitter comments who post images of woodchippers and GIFs of guns being loaded when she posts about trans people. But if someone looks at a gender critical person the wrong way you can guarantee she'll be making a tweet about it.

-"I guffawed so hard I almost pulled something"- in response to a gay man who said he was receiving abuse from LGB-Alliance supporters

-Reposted an image of a defaced pride flag that had the caption "get this shit off the flag". The "shit" being referred to were colours representing gay people of colour, victims of HIV/AIDs as well as trans people.

-Referred to trans-supporters as "r*pist rights activists"

She's a fan of the anti-trans account "libsoftiktok"

It's this sort of thing day in day out, progressively becoming more obsessed as time goes on. You can see she's completely immersed in this stuff with her online and offline social group being dominantly anti-trans.

What a terrible position to be in @FunZebra
and why does your Conservative candidate live so far away? As they are the only Party prepared to revise the Equalities Act and protect women they aren’t giving women much choice in your area. Is there any reason why there isn’t someone more local….ie are you very rural or something?

I’m in Wales where legend has it that you can put a red rosette on a sheep and people will vote for it. We have Tory councillors on the council and MSes in the Senedd so I don’t know why they couldn’t field a local Tory candidate.

Gymrabbit · 04/07/2024 00:47

Mark Brooks Tory standing for Bexleyheath and Crayford said ‘I totally agree with single sex spaces’ “ there are only 2 sexes” I don’t have any truck with any of the nonsense’

l met him while he was out canvassing. Labour have canvassed here but I was out so have not asked the Labour candidate the question.

Yeah I stopped there I'm afraid.

Joan Smith has written an article, explaining why she can't vote Labour at this election. I'm sure it won't convert anyone who thinks that women's rights are a minor issue, but here it is:

The parallel with this would be me reading who posted ... E.g. @Christinapple and disregarding what was said. It's sad that you won't/don't take the time to read the primary source. Only the headline tweets and the reviews. I will continue to read your whole posts in the hope that I can learn something. But now I know what your posts are based on I will not be optimisitic.

I tend to agree that prominent people should keep off twitter as much as possible, or else be incredibly disciplined in their posting ( which runs counter to the nature of twitter, though); but the fact is that trans activists and most trans-identified people are also totally consumed by gender politics...to the extent that many feel they cannot exist if someone does not accept their assumed identity. Everything in their life revolves around 'being trans'; about 'passing'; about ensuring compliance.

Many of us have this issue as their prome political obsession...... I do, myself, and will be dedicating our poltrical energy, intelligence and struggle to furthering our goals...and that is respect for the dignity and integritry of women and girls and an end to the ideological colonisation and authoritarianism that goes with it.

The violence and genuine abuse is all one way......the screaming, shouting, threatening, banging, blockading and so on.
