Is it ok for Angela Rayner to address a sex segregated group?

There are lots of clips doing the rounds of Angela Rayner addresing a room full men, presmably muslim men, on the subject of Gaza. There are no women. Is this ok? Did she speak to the women as well (as they presumaly have the vote too) or just the men? And if not are the women being disadvantaged because of their sex and why is that ok with Labour? Women should not have to vote the way their male relatives do or based on information filtered info from those relatives. Even if she did meet with the women as well why is the sex segregation ok with her?

The investigation was concluded last year. They've just not been truthful about any of it because it suited them not to be.

I don't care much for Diane Abbott but there's no doubt she's been treated appallingly.

Agree. The recent debate in parliament where canting hypocrites went on about how dreadful Lee Anderson’s remarks were and she tried again and again to speak and was ignored spoke volumes. She’s just a tool to them - convenient to use to beat your opponents with but no recognition of her as a person.

I haven’t agreed with some of her actions but her being ignored got to me too.

Is it ok for AR to be in a segregated room?

Absolutely not, in a million years no. It’s 2024 and we are all over diversity and inclusion in every sphere of public life.

But we know where the women in this constituency are, and why.

It’s also pretty condescending not to hold all members of society up to the same inclusive scrutiny that we demand everywhere else.

I’m sure if she were in a room full of, say, retired white men, she’d be gobbing off about the patriarchy.

Context matters.

if she is making the rounds speaking to a variety of social groups and clubs, then the demographics of those organizations are going to vary.

if she is speaking at a place that actively segregates men and women, and the segregation is not equal, then it is problematic. Women need equal placement, view, and access to the speaker. So groups could be split left and right in identical sections, but not front and back or in different rooms.

She’s been to a mosque and was in a Hindu temple this week. What are the odds on her visiting a church or synagogue? Very slim.

The men don’t look very impressed; most of them are not even looking at her.
