A resource thread for materials, questions, points to make in the run-up to the election:

Sex Matters have a list of things to raise:

'Our election asks

  1. Ensure clear language, rules and data wherever sex matters
  2. Implement the Cass Report and stop transitioning children in schools
  3. Drop dangerous plans to criminalise so-called “conversion therapy”
  4. Make the Equality Act clear
  5. Guarantee women’s right to female-only spaces
  6. Say no to legal gender self-ID
  7. Record sex accurately in healthcare and the criminal justice system
  8. Fix the sex data muddle with modern data systems
  9. Protect women’s sports
  10. Make regulators do their job and protect everyone’s rights.'

GE2024: Stand up for single-sex services - Sex Matters

A summer election has been called. Sex Matters calls for clarity in law and a return to policies based on the objective reality of sex, not the subjective feeling of “gender identity”. Parties must be absolutely clear when it comes to sex-based rights....

Did anyone see that Kelly Jay has announced that she will be standing against Lloyd Russell-Moyle. It should make for interesting debate if nothing else.

Faffertea · 23/05/2024 14:30

I live in a constituency which has been blue with a massive (think 10s of thousands) majority since Adam was a boy. I won’t have SDP or Party of Women to vote for. Don’t usually get people canvassing for votes either.

For those of you in similar situations what are you going to do to show your opinion on this? Write to local candidates? Anything else?

I spoilt my ballot last time but I don’t think that actually gets the message through on this.

I work in NHS so need to be careful of what I do too.

Sad

It's a hell of a thing both in the message it gives to women but also the people of Kent. 'Hi voters of Kent, I know you only have one Labour MP at the moment and I ignore her at every opportunity, but please vote in more Labour MPs. Ill try not to ignore them Keir x'

PronounssheRa · 23/05/2024 14:48

@Faffertea

I'm similar but in a red constituency. The tories ignore us because they will never get in, Labour ignore us because they don't have to do anything to get votes. Even some very iffy council shenanigans doesn't stop people voting Labour.

I tend to vote indie in locals, spoil my vote at the general, the only influence i can have is to support crowd funding for legal cases, respond to consultations etc.

EdithStourton · 23/05/2024 15:31

Never, since I was first able to vote, have I been so undecided.

The Tories are a shambles.
The LibDems believe in the fantasy that you can wave a magic piece of paper and Peter becomes Petra, in body as well as in name.
Labour has a leader with splinters up his arse.

AAARGH!

ArabellaScott · 23/05/2024 15:39

Write to everyone standing. Ask questions. Be specific - mention the Cass Review, self ID, use the process.

In many cases voting is a completely separate issue.

You could meet your Twaw Councillor or candidate and ask questions. Hang posters or wear badges. Attend hustings and ask questions. Write to your local paper with questions. Call radio phone ins. Comment on socials, etc.

A vote is one thing that can be used in many ways, if you see what I mean.

I'm still a floating voter and I am willing to vote for the candidate whose answers I like best.

Maybe one of the few times most politicians actually pay much attention to what the electorate thinks/wants/cares about ...

This, this and this. Regardless of where your party allegiances lie, the time to make your point is now, while they still need your vote. As far as I'm concerned, it's futile to expect to have the same kind of leverage afterwards.

Sorry all .. but to me this is not as important as literally EVERYTHING ELSE !!

NHS
Courts
Public transport
Economy
Public services in general

I Am vehemently GC and see this as an extremely important issue BUT if we have inadequate breast screening, , nurses available to do cervical smears .. intact ALL WOMEN HEALTH CARE .. then what is the point ?

I want a government that pours money into public service so that all the women caring for others on diddly squat are compensated.... long before some bloke calling himself 'female' gets a look in ..

What divides the Conservatives from the Labour Party in the coming #GE2024? They are like Tweedledum and Tweedledee when it comes to foreign policy, health, education, social security, transport, migration, Brexit, law reform, electoral reform and so on.
Gender ideology seems to be the only issue on which there is a clear dividing line.

Namechange6477 · 28/05/2024 16:48

Although I am a lifelong Tory voter, I have been increasingly disillusioned by them over the past many years.

I also however cannot stand many Labour politicians and am doubtful that they can do a much better job. (And obviously their views on women!).

I actually probably will vote Labour this time for the first time, but only because I am in Rosie Duffield's constituency so in a better position than most...

Most interestingly, the Conservative candidate (though obviously they will never win), is a vocal Pride supporter and she/her badge wearer...

Useful site for tactical voting info:

https://www.getvoting.org/

That seems quite an odd site. Am I using it wrongly? I entered my postcode and then I presumed it would ask me what I wanted to achieve with my vote, but it didn’t. It just told me to vote Labour!

Oh right. That's a bit odd, right enough! I was using it to see who was polling second, to see how best I could challenge the incumbent. Perhaps it's politically skewed, though, I didn't really check it out beyond testing it for my postcode.

'What is Best for Britain?
We are the researchers, data scientists, strategists, and activists, fixing the problems Britain faces after Brexit.
We conduct polling to help politicians lead debate, not follow it.
We design policy for whoever is in government, today or tomorrow.
And we give voters the tools to speak to, and persuade, those in power'

That's who run that 'get voting' site. Seems to be anti-Brexit?

Hm. Maybe worth taking it with a pinch of salt, then.

Women's Equality Party:

https://www.womensequality.org.uk/

Bearing in mind the ‘Women’s Equality Party’ is now totally TWAW, much against the wishes of many founding members.

It doesn’t tolerate dissent from the TWAW line, as child-safeguarding campaigner Heather Brunskell-Evans discovered after she said children shouldn’t be told they were born in the wrong body. WEP launched an investigation, then dropped her as its spokeswoman on violence against women and girls.

WEP will never get a vote from me.

Absolutely, but it'd be really useful to write to them and tell them all of what you've said here directly!

Good point Arabella, I will! Though I’m sure they despise actual feminism.
