I mean I know it’s a bit of a rhetorical question but ffs the interviewer really pushes Tom Burke on JKR who to his credit handles it well but they really really hate her don’t they? https://www.theguardian.com/film/article/2024/may/17/i-did-a-lot-of-yelling-tom-burke-on-socks-controversy-and-mad-max

‘I did a lot of yelling’: Tom Burke on socks, controversy and Mad Max

Yes, there were more flame-throwers, but working on Furiosa was pretty similar to starring in Joanna Hogg’s The Souvenir, says the actor. So how does he duck the crossfire that comes with playing JK Rowling’s Strike?

Very disappointed at what the Guardian has become, I used to buy it but the last straw for me was the full page arbitrary for Peter Sutcliffe. Also a more recent article that middle aged women shouldn’t have long hair. Their TWAW stance has been a kind of gateway drug to progressive misogyny that they either can’t see or don’t care about.

Middle aged women shouldn't have long hair !!!!! WTAF
That sounds like a bollocks of an article,....... tosses long grey hair over shoulder 😁

God Ryan Gilbey sounds a right gormless prick in this piece. I have known people who worked at the Guardian and they would be much more on the Hadley Freeman end of the reality spectrum. They worked on actual journalism though; the arts section might be more susceptible to gender bollocks

"imagine Nigel Farage has written a string of thrillers, which Netflix is turning into a six-parter"

"Imagine Hannibal Lecter is appearing in Bake Off"

"Imagine Stalin is cast as Dr Who"

"Imagine the BBC is controlled by the spirit of Mephistopheles using a ouija board"

I bet all these arseholes have watched Roman Polanski films. I bet they love him.

napody · 17/05/2024 20:39

Yup re The Crucible- all he needed to say was "I denounce Goody Rowling" and the interview could have moved on.

miri1985 · 17/05/2024 20:54

I hope in years to come people ask anyone who worked for the Guardian "how do you sleep at night knowing you worked for a paper that promoted childhood transition and demonised those who asked questions about this treatment?" or "how do you sleep at night knowing the organisation you worked for promoted children being sterilised and mentally harmed?"

AtrociousCircumstance · 17/05/2024 21:05

What a rank little oppressor that ‘journalist’ is. It was patently clear that the actor liked JK, understood it was a contentious issue, didn’t want to engage in the non/debate debate, has too much integrity to condemn JK just because he’s being told he should, and shut the exchange down.

The Nigel Farage thing was pathetic. Desperate and mindless of the writer and merely a carrier for his misogyny.

Yep I was thinking this too.

The extremist TRAs are straight out of The Crucible. They want hand-wringing confessions and repentance - and they want to know who else is guilty by association…

“I want the light of God; I want the sweet love of Jesus! I danced for the Devil; I saw him, I wrote in his book; I go back to Jesus; I kiss His hand. I saw Sarah Good with the Devil! I saw Goody Osburn with the Devil! I saw Bridget Bishop with the Devil!”

And how many Mary Warrens have we seen, those who dared speak up then found themselves so ostracised and isolated that they belted back to the “The birds are attacking us” side?

The Crucible is my favourite play but by Jove, it’s near the knuckle these days. I wonder what Miller would have made of all this?

A more useful thought experiment would be what if Nigel Farage stood up and declared “trans women are women!” It would be hilarious watching the likes of Gilbey and the rest of the Guardian struggle to cope with how to respond.

”Oh my! We agree with Farage about something? Does not compute.” [implodes]

Definitelyrandom · 17/05/2024 23:22

I thought Tom Burke played the idiot journalist very well. And it is difficult to see how the idiot journalist could have written a sensible article without mentioning the Musketeers…..

Hilarious. I'd love to see it. Come on Nigel, step up, just for us.

I feel obliged to state that, if Nigel Farage ever wrote a good thriller then I would watch it. And the same goes for Owen Jones.

Yeah, me too.

I think imaginably Farage could. Jones not so much.

TempestTost · 18/05/2024 00:13

I thought the most interesting thing was about that segment was that he said he'd be uncomfortable to work for Lars VT.

lonelywater · 17/05/2024 15:42

what else was anyone expecting from the Graun? Its been a total bonfire for about ten years now and won't change without a wholesale clearcut of the management.

Yes, we are approaching the Sun territory, aka no one in Liverpool will touch it with a barge pole after the Hillsborough travesty. All people living in the real world should just laugh when refusing a Guardian interview and then share this with social media.

Ereshkigalangcleg · 18/05/2024 01:07

you must be getting confused between that and the weekly fantasy articles he churns out for the Graun.

Quite probably Grin

it is noticeable that Talcum has had noting to say at all about either WPATH or Case (unless I missed it) I realise his current crush is cheerleading for Hamas but even so-perhaps he might be considering a bit of ferret action?

Cass (stupid auto-carrot)

Alchemistress · 18/05/2024 05:16

I have a lot of time for Marina Hyde, she's a great writer, but I have no idea why she continues to stay at The Graun ( actually I do, I suspect she is on £££), when other women like Hadley Freeman have jumped ship.

I imagine the response to the first trans MP (Jamie Wallis) was.something like this. He doesn't seem to turn up to any of the debates and I never hear other TWAW MPs standing up for him.

AnotherHelenB · 18/05/2024 10:42

Not knowing what the interview itself actually covered, and what was edited out, I was baffled by the fact the interviewer devoted a large amount of waffle to Tom Burke's career progression, without even mentioning that he was in the Musketeers - as joint-lead in a DBC production that ran for 3 years and had serious worldwide sales. As far as I know, that was his first lead in a mainstream production, so something of a break-out role, surely?

But then 1/3 of the article is trying to persuade him to bash JKR, so maybe Musketeers had to be edited out to make way for that. (insert massive eye roll here...)
