Scottish Parliament votes to accept Cass Report - Forbes made Deputy First Minister

The amended motion that passed was as follows

That the Parliament welcomes the report submitted by Dr Hilary Cass on gender identity services for children and young people; recognises the report as a valid scientific document, and calls on the Scottish Government to thoroughly examine the recommendations of the NHS England commissioned report, and its applicability to NHS Scotland services, and to update the Parliament on the outcome before the summer recess and further calls on the Scottish Government to publish all papers relating to the multi-disciplinary clinical team work in assessing Dr Cass’s recommendations, and to urgently prepare a progress report on the existing strategy for reducing long waits for children and young people to access specialist gender services.

It passed 113 to 7 [presumably the Greens voted against.] It was amended to give the Government a longer period to formulate a response. Note the insane Green motion undermining the report was not even tabled.

Turns out the difficult women were right ALL along. Take a bow ladies.

Check out the full debate with the rabid contribution from Harvey and good ones from most other parties starts 15:15. Lots of Ferrets to be seen.

Meanwhile in not unconnected news Kate Forbes became Deputy First Minister with various other important roles too. This makes Forbes more or less certain to be the next SNP leader one suspects.

https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-scotland-68976320

She couldn't have done it without the Greens getting rid of Humza and then voting to keep the SNP in power. Which I am sure they are totally fine with :) Once again the Greens lack of competence comes to bite them. It could be that the SNP is starting to grasp reality we shall see.

I didn’t even know Blackford is a wee free. That’s probably significant, isn’t it?

one rule for the men

And I have read recently that John Swinney is Catholic, didn't know that either

To be fair he has made statements on his views on abortion and equality marriage in the past, so I assume it's been something people have brought up before.

But Forbes certainly seems to have attracted far more vitriol and anger from people like, say, Patrick Harvie, despite her support for women's right to choose and equal marriage.

The way Harvie talks about her, you'd think she'd stolen his toadstool and fishing rod.

stealtheatingtunnocks · 09/05/2024 19:00

Faith is a protected characteristic and a personal matter. I don’t have a problem with MPs msps whatever having a faith or none. I have a problem with them refusing to meet with constituents, experts or debate. So I have a problem wirh Patrick Harvey.

It's almost admirable how two men who've been accused of misogyny so many times are still willing to stand up in Parliament and condemn and impugn a woman because she has been raised to a position of power that they think she shouldn't hold.

They clearly aren't even a bit ashamed at their open hatred of a powerful woman.

John Swinney has also been reported to be a member of the Church of Scotland. This was raised in a BBC radio Scotland programme the other day and they said initially he was a Catholic and then later in the programme corrected themselves and said he was Church of Scotland. In any event, no one seems to be raising it as an issue.

stealtheatingtunnocks · 09/05/2024 20:44

Not knowing whether you are CoS or Catholic can be a serious issues in some parts of Scotland. Swinney will shed votes if he keeps that up!

HirplesWithHaggis · 09/05/2024 20:53

According to Wiki:

*"Personal life

Swinney was married to Lorna King from 1991 to 1998. They had two children: Judith and Stuart. The couple divorced in 1998 after the Daily Record revealed King had an affair with a married nursery teacher.[122] The marriage was subsequently annulled by the Scottish Catholic Tribunal in order that Swinney be allowed to marry in the Catholic Church in Scotland.[123]

In 2003, Swinney married Elizabeth Quigley, a BBC Scotland News reporter.[124] Quigley was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis in 2000.[125] In 2010, she gave birth to Swinney's third child, Matthew.[126][127] They live near Blairgowrie in Perth and Kinross.[128]

Swinney has described himself as "a man of deep Christian faith".[129]"*

So, Catholic? 🤔

Rainbowshit · 09/05/2024 21:06

I am very much here for Kate Forbes scrolling on her phone as beaker slags her off. 🤭 Exactly the respect he should be given.

It isn't entirely clear whether John Swinney is CofS or Catholic. This states CofS and I did hear the presenter on Radio Scotland correct herself earlier in the week when she said at first he was Catholic and then changed her mind. It is possible he has changed his mind since his first marriage.

In that clip you linked to there is a transcript:

"I'm being asked to vote for someone who thinks there's something wrong with me, not because of any views I hold but simply because of who I am. I will not do that."
my bold and underline

Does this not apply to how the greens view kids who think they are trans?
If we accept "simply because of who I am" means that's how nature made me, then:
greens thinks there's something wrong with trans identifying kids, simply because of who they are/how nature made them

Seems Ross Greer is also a committed Christian! (Denomination unspecified)

Greer seems to forget that religious belief is just as much a protected characteristic under the equality act as his sexuality is.

The message about how isolated the Greens are is getting out in the media.

General election sometime in the next 8 months. It seems clear that the SNP is reverse ferretting, but how far remains to be seen. They cannot afford more internal division right now. Turning on the Greens politically over Gender makes sense and is going to be popular within the party. In turn that pushes the other parties on the same path. SNP ferrets are now racing to reverse faster than Scottish Labour ferrets who started reversing earlier. My suspicion is the SNP may end up blaming EVERYTHING bad on the Greens while claiming to be innocent of anything that goes wrong.

The key thing is SNP MSPs do not want to be seen on the same side as the Greens regarding the Cass Report. However the Cass report screws up the premise for the Conversion Therapy ban. My suspicion is that bill will pass, but it hopefully will be amended so much it will be a dead letter.

Which in turn will have an impact on any conversion therapy bill passed at Westminster.

Scottish Greens ‘prioritising gender ideology over protecting children’

Co-leader Patrick Harvie said party could not support the Cass review as a ‘valid scientific document’

Have you got any reverse ferret examples I can enjoy reading?

YES!

ArabellaScott · 10/05/2024 10:39

Hm. Actually that's not changing position. It's just stating the existing situation. He needs to strike the GRR off the statue book, I believe?

ArabellaScott · 10/05/2024 12:42

'Misreading of the law here from John Swinney. There was no Gender Reform law ruling from the Supreme Ct. And the s.35 veto does not preclude altering the Bill. I would have thought he would have known that'

'The only court ruling on the GRR Bill was an Outer House Ct of Session (Edinburgh based) judicial review ruling on the UK govt's decision to use s.35 order. SG lost this and could have appealed but didn't.

'This is different from a Supreme Ct ruling on the limits of the powers of the Scottish Parly as we saw in the referendum case and a couple of others.'
