Scottish Parliament votes to accept Cass Report - Forbes made Deputy First Minister

The amended motion that passed was as follows

That the Parliament welcomes the report submitted by Dr Hilary Cass on gender identity services for children and young people; recognises the report as a valid scientific document, and calls on the Scottish Government to thoroughly examine the recommendations of the NHS England commissioned report, and its applicability to NHS Scotland services, and to update the Parliament on the outcome before the summer recess and further calls on the Scottish Government to publish all papers relating to the multi-disciplinary clinical team work in assessing Dr Cass’s recommendations, and to urgently prepare a progress report on the existing strategy for reducing long waits for children and young people to access specialist gender services.

It passed 113 to 7 [presumably the Greens voted against.] It was amended to give the Government a longer period to formulate a response. Note the insane Green motion undermining the report was not even tabled.

Turns out the difficult women were right ALL along. Take a bow ladies.

Check out the full debate with the rabid contribution from Harvey and good ones from most other parties starts 15:15. Lots of Ferrets to be seen.

Meanwhile in not unconnected news Kate Forbes became Deputy First Minister with various other important roles too. This makes Forbes more or less certain to be the next SNP leader one suspects.

She couldn't have done it without the Greens getting rid of Humza and then voting to keep the SNP in power. Which I am sure they are totally fine with :) Once again the Greens lack of competence comes to bite them. It could be that the SNP is starting to grasp reality we shall see.

Kate Forbes

Kate Forbes 'honoured' to become deputy first minister

John Swinney has announced his first cabinet after being officially sworn in as first minister.

All we need now is for the fucking loons in our Senedd to face reality.

Given that they:ve just voted for a batshit new voting system for an enlarged body (details from the BBC below) I will not be holding my breath.

"The current combination of 40 local and 20 regional MSs would be replaced by 16 larger constituencies, each represented by six members.

Parties would put forward lists of ranked candidates for every seat, under what is known as a closed list system, preventing voters from backing individual candidates."

Great news op

So Wales left in the bin, Labour there not helping

Diversity of thought and opinion is a good thing. Pro choice views should be heard in reproductive rights debates. I’m glad they don’t win, but I can’t criticise what Forbes has actually said about the buffer zones.

it’s interesting that she gets criticised for her faith - Humza’s faith is much harder on LGB+ rights, but no one ever said “oh, we’ll be throwing gays off the roof of Bute House, will we?”

I wonder why Humza got a free pass?

I think Humza got a Free pass because he was 'useful' to certain quarters.

One of the first things he did as first minister was set up a Muslim prayer meeting FFS.

Can you imagine the wailing ic KFs did the same?

Cos he's got testicles instead of ovaries, I'm guessing.

So did Tim Farron.

Yes, but Tim Farron's experience wasn't in Scotland.

People hardly blink at male Wee Frees here. Forbes has been targeted for being female.

Do you have examples of high profile male Wee Frees that don't get asked constantly about their views on abortion etc?

Or for that matter high profile English Muslims who do? (By mainatream sources - obviously I know there are nutjobs online claiming Khan has a cunning plan to make London Muslim or whatever - to which the obvious response is that if so he's epically bad at implementing it.)

I think it's naïve to think that the type of religion involved isn't relevant as well as the sex of the religious person.

And I get why that might be - in a country with a majority Christian heritage, (most) people don't want to pick on members of minority religions. It feels like bullying. But if the questions are relevant, they're relevant.

GrammarTeacher · 09/05/2024 13:24

Muslims don't believe life begins at conception. So wouldn't have the same drive as the anti-abortionists.
Regardless, it you think KF is on the side of feminists you are wrong.

ArabellaScott · 09/05/2024 13:29

Patrick Harvie is gunning for Forbes.

'Mr Harvie urged the new first minister to give a signal of what direction his new government would take.
He said: “Yesterday that signal came pretty clearly - progressive ministers sacked, and the second most powerful job in government given to someone who has opposed LGBT people’s legal equality, who has expressed judgemental attitudes against abortion, and who has even expressed the view that people who have families without being married are doing something wrong.”
He asked: “Is this the Scottish government’s vision for the future of Scotland - taking us back to the repressive values of the 1950s?”'

He’s lost his political power I reckon

He’s now on the outside annoyed rather than inside being damaging

Got to be a good thing

StainlessSteelMouse · 09/05/2024 13:40

Patrick Harvie sounds thoroughly scundered, and I'll take that for the moment.

Ian Blackford is a Wee Free and didn’t get the amount of vitriol that’s thrown at Forbes.

His religion didn’t stop him from acquiring the SNP leadership job at Westminster.

socialwannabe · 09/05/2024 14:29

Wow! This is a much stronger statement on the Cass report than the Welsh Senedd managed. Our entire parliament risks ending up as isolated as the bampot Scottish greens if its not careful.

I think Scotland may have grown in a way Wales has failed to do..

misscockerspaniel · 09/05/2024 14:39

Without wishing to derail the thread, if the election was today and there were only two names/parties on the ballot paper, would you vote SNP or Labour, or abstain or may be, even, spoil the ballot paper?

WearyAuldWumman · 09/05/2024 14:44

Under the new circumstances, I’d vote SNP.

WearyAuldWumman · 09/05/2024 14:47

Scottish Labour was just as bad over gender reform in most respects, with the exception of those who supported the Lamont amendment on medical matters.

Sorry, can’t provide links at the moment - I’m out the house and on my phone.

Oh my goodness, tricky! AS has been the most dishonestly back pedalling of all the politicians since the Cass Review Trying to claim the SNP tricked him into voting for the GRA was just pathetic. Have no respect for the man.

Mind you, SNP have been full tilt behind this madness for so long.

I would spoil my paper. SNP would have to do more than words to win my trust.

334bu · 09/05/2024 14:57

Regardless of the trans element, Kate Forbes is bad bad bad news for all women. Anti-abortionists are delighted she’s got in.

Humza Yousaf didn't vote for any progressive legislation either, unlike Kate Forbes. HY always had an urgent meeting when he might have had to vote for something his religion might object to.

Fair enough, though I still think (at least at the UK level) that mainstream media/ politicians are more likely to go after Christians than Muslims with these sorts of questions. I think we're both right actually - they're more likely to go after Christians and more likely to go after women.

To be fair he has made statements on his views on abortion and equality marriage in the past, so I assume it's been something people have brought up before.

But Forbes certainly seems to have attracted far more vitriol and anger from people like, say, Patrick Harvie, despite her support for women's right to choose and equal marriage.
