... it doesn't even mention sex or gender! Not even once! What the fuck did TRAs find to object to about it?!

If you have small children and don't have a copy, I'd strongly recommend it- it's lovely!

It was produced by Trangender Trend, wasn’t it?

Or maybe Rachel said something that made her and her book a target.

It’s perfectly obvious there’s nothing in it that’s “transphobic” so it can only be considered problematic by association of one sort or another. Had Rachel sold it through the usual channels she had been used to, it would have not have raised an eyebrow.

dementedpixie · 04/05/2024 14:52

It was deemed 'transphobic' as it says your body is perfect as it is so you don't need to cut your breasts off or invert your penis to be happy

ManchesterBeatrice · 04/05/2024 15:00

Never read it so can't comment.

lanadelgrey · 04/05/2024 15:02

It’s a lovely, positive book and should be on every nursery/reception class bookshelf

ManchesterBeatrice · 04/05/2024 15:03

Will have to give it a read ☺️

Codlingmoths · 04/05/2024 15:05

I should order it. Actually I should go into a bookshop and ask if they can order it, so they know people buy it.

UtopiaPlanitia · 04/05/2024 15:06

I think the book has a particularly positive and accepting message for children who may have health issues or disability: they’re shown enjoying themselves along with everyone else.

dementedpixie · 04/05/2024 15:07

Think this is the wording but may not be in the correct order. Its a picture book though.

I got it when it was first released - it is one of my ASD DCs favourite books!

EveSix · 04/05/2024 15:09

Very lovely book, highly recommended. A hit in our EYFS and KS1 classes. Rachel visited our school and was a delight!

CountingCrones · 04/05/2024 15:09

It’s a beautiful and very positive book - children from many different cultures and abilities/disabilities shown all playing and celebrating themselves.

Jessica Ahlberg’s illustrations are as gorgeous as those of her parents. Rachel Rooney’s message of self acceptance and delight in all the things our bodies can do is full of playfulness and joy.

I’ve given it to so many times as a gift and it’s always been received with delight.

dementedpixie · 04/05/2024 15:11

Missed the first bit I think

Oh I'm so glad she has been invited to visit schools alongside all the abuse she's received! I hope your school wasn't the only one.

It's basic writing wise but can't see that it's controversial.

Runor · 04/05/2024 15:52

Thankyou dementedpixie I haven’t come across it before, it looks lovely. Beatrice it’s aimed at very young children, so obviously the writing needs to be ‘basic’

MrsOvertonsWindow · 04/05/2024 16:08

It's a delightful book and all the "transphobic" claims just demonstrate how unhinged certain transactivists are. Imagine complaining about a book that encourages little children to feel comfortable in their growing bodies. 🙄

Waitwhat23 · 04/05/2024 17:33

It's a lovely book. My wee one loves it. It's a lovely celebration of all the great things our bodies do, with lovely illustrations. My favourite page is the one which starts 'my body can act like a low flying plane' because the illustrations follow the words across the page. The wee pictures of the characters at the front and end pages are just full of joy.

For little ones, I also recommend Rachel Rooney's 'A Patch of Black'.

Rachel has been the focus of a campaign of just sheer spite.

FuckOffYokeofOpression · 04/05/2024 18:11

It's a lovely little book. I know there were librarians and many others in the industry who were supportive of Rachel but were just too damn afraid to speak out. In that climate there was a real fear of losing jobs.

Scant comfort for Rachel but plenty of people will never look at CV in the same light again.

Talkamongstyourselves · 04/05/2024 18:12

My guess would be "You're born in your body, you don't have a spare, so love it, hug it and treat it with care", that triggered them. Although when it comes to TRA's it doesn't take much to set them off.

Caravaggiouch · 04/05/2024 18:14

DD loved this book as a toddler. And it’s far more “inclusive” than any of the pro-trans stuff I’ve seen, which invariably has a pretty, white, able bodied child as protagonist.

What does 'CV' stand for?

I'm a Maths geek, so I automatically read it as 105!

I think it's a person that had a vendetta against the book and Rachel Rooney

Figment1982 · 04/05/2024 18:32

It’s a lovely book.. I would recommend buying it directly from the publisher although I noted yesterday that it is now available via Waterstones.

I keep meaning to buy another copy to add to DD’s nursery book swap.

Was it Carol Vorderman?!

It's just a gorgeous, lovely, empowering book. Highly recommended.

I've read a LOT of kids' books, and this one was stand-out.

If it's any consolation to Rachel, one day it will be part of history as to why such a book caused such a stramash.
