TRAs don’t want trans people to talk to journalists about DIY HRT… I wonder why?

From Instagram today:

”I have been reliably informed Guardian journalists are snooping around asking for trans people to talk to them about DIY HRT. They are particularly looking for under 18s doing DIY. Shouldn’t need to be said but. Do. Not. Engage. Spread widely do not engage. We need this notice spread out via every grassroots support group and social circle in the country. Urgent. If they get even one to take part it becomes a national conversation. Top alert.”

For the uninitiated, DIY HRT is manufactured by small suppliers (some in their own home) and sold online, with no safety or hygiene standards, prescription, regulation or oversight. The packaging I’ve seen for one brand was purple holographic card stock printed with anime girls on it and “Keep away from parents” on the box.

Some trans people who have bought DIY hormones have complained the bottles they were sent were contaminated with what appeared to be hair.

Why on Earth would trans activists not want this to be a part of the national conversation about the standards of medical care given to trans identified children, I wonder 🤔. Truly a mystery for the ages.

Worst thing I've ever read on Mumsnet. Literally froze when I saw that. And guess which side of the "debate" it's coming from.
When someone shows you who they are... believe them.

Datun · 20/04/2024 01:35

Well, it, and the poster, won't last.

Agree @Onionbelt , had the exact same reaction to that sick post by that other poster.

My next immediate thought was to report it, to get it removed before other people have the misfortune to see it, but then thought - no! Leave it up in all it's spiteful, sickening glory, so everyone can see the depths some posters will go to.

Right side of history, my arse.

If anyone knows how to archive before it does eventually get zapped, that would be much appreciated.

Ereshkigalangcleg · 20/04/2024 02:11

They desperately try and think of the worst thing they can say. But with a woeful vocabulary and zero imagination, that's just about it.

Unfortunately since every troll on the planet says it, it's beginning to sound hackneyed, to me at least.

(And oh so juvenile.)

It's the best they've got when emotional blackmail doesn't work. It's all a bit meh.

This is remarkable.

Sounds like if you cared about people's health, you should be trying to make it easier for trans people to access HRT through the NHS”.

Just because a person wants a medical treatment, doesn’t mean they should get that treatment. Gold standard treatment doesn’t mean giving in to patients demands. It means working out the best treatment for the unique health needs of that patient.

And Bonfire is very much aware of this. Most of us are. In fact, most mature and reasonable thinking humans know this. What a fucked up bit of emotional manipulation you have rolled out with that post.

Does anyone else remember the female poster proudly declaring that many young butch lesbians now micro dosed with testosterone to achieve the look they were aiming for? I took it as exaggeration at the time, but even so, if even one female was doing this thinking it was harmless and just a cosmetic procedure it is so very harmful.

One time I heard my voice on a recording and cringed at how squeaky it was compared with the voice of the other woman on the recording. I mentioned this in passing to someone in my pro-trans circles and he asked me if I'd ever considered taking T to make my voice deeper!

Who do we report these people to? It's illegal right?

It almost certainly is illegal. the anime card packaging is.

The MHRA is the regulator

Given the battles that women are having trying to secure their own hrt for their own health issues, I don't think that this suggestion is going to elicit any more response than a hollow laugh.

Indeed.

Although as it was written directly to me and about me, I'll add a more personal response to it (I didn't see any of the comments that have now been deleted but I got the gist from the responses that we were treated to a display of "both sides" "debate". How lovely.):

  1. I didn't add anything to the AMA thread because it was already very full and I have already previously had a very in depth discussion on MN with a transwoman where I was asking questions to increase my understanding from a perspective other than my own. After a lot of interesting discussion, that poster shared a revolting fantasy about nurses in women's prisons 🤢.. and, as it turned out, had been posting all over other threads, including the transwidows' support thread. But that's another story. Of course I care about people's health and welfare.
  2. That comment shows incredible ignorance about the Cass Report and the irreversible damage that is being done to children and young people as a result of this worldwide medical experiment.

What!? Someone is chasing you around MN threads?
I'm so sorry, it seems there's no limit to the depths some people will sink to.

ResisterRex · 20/04/2024 10:53

I missed what was said but at least the timing of it is instructive. Set it next to the misinformation peddled from the States about Cass and I think we are under no illusions as to the likely location and firm opposition to evidence based care for children.

FFS! I have significant voice dysmorphia myself but that would never occur to me? WTAF!

AlisonDonut · 20/04/2024 11:01

Just a thought, does anyone know any women who were hit by the HRT shortage a few years back [like myself] who for one second thought the best response would be...to make our own?

Utterly baffling.

CheeseSandwichRiskAssessment · 20/04/2024 11:44

I'd wager that feeling like you're in a secret, special club that normal people couldn't possibly understand is a huge part of the appeal of this whole thing, for many.

I've never heard of butch lesbians doing it, however in my youth I was a powerlifter, and it was commonplace to take steroids at the gym that I trained at. Me included.

It did make my features more masculine when I was taking them, so I don't think it's a leap that some butch lesbians may have had this bad advice and taken it.

Sadly, a few people I knew at that gym and within that circle passed away, coroner reports from thickened heart walls to exacerbating congenital issues. It put me off for life. I think really I made a lucky break.

I'm over a decade older now, and even though I was a young adult when I started taking steroids I feel like I was too immature to really understand what I was doing and I definitely searched for things to support confirmation bias.

It saddens me to see people basically looking to do the same thing for the imagery of it when I've seen the dangers of it.

It is, and many of them have a very simplistic view of the world themselves.

MrsTerryPratchett · 20/04/2024 14:43

@Jimmyneutronsforehead I know someone in his 30s going through exactly that. Steroids may kill him. Even though he stopped taking them a while ago. Unlicensed, unprescribed drugs, used for cosmetic purposes are dangerous. And young people are notoriously bad at risk assessment. It behooves adults to protect them from these choices.
