The notable MPs in this debate

Off the back of the HoC debate, can we compile a list of the MPs who distinguished themselves both for good and bad? Those who nailed their colours to the mast?

From David Davies, conservative, who hosted the first group of women trying to bring this to MPs attention, to
Lloyd Russell Moyle, labour, who feels both sides were toxic….
Kemi Badenoch, conservative, clarifying the law on women and equality
Rosie Duffield, labour.

I think it’s helpful to see who has had women’s backs. My MP is thoroughly unpopular on MN, but he quietly has women’s backs on this issue.

And was challenged on that yesterday.

fantastic go Victoria - just catching up on it all now

GoodOldEmmaNess · 16/04/2024 07:46

Victoria Atkins was very impressive. I'm so pleased that someone competent was sitting in that chair when the music stopped.

EasternStandard · 16/04/2024 07:48

Victoria Atkins was fantastic

I also think Cates is right but it’s bigger scandal than just this generation

DisforDarkChocolate · 16/04/2024 07:59

Victoria was fantastic yesterday.

Russell yet again showed the world what a self-serving misogynistic tosser he is.

AGlinnerOfHope · 16/04/2024 08:01

Miriam Cates (conservative)
Victoria Atkins (conservative)

Dawn Butler was woeful

Talked about trans children, repeated the misinformation about the Cass review ignoring 100 studies, talked about a hostile environment, delays in reforming GRA

She is a true believer who appears to do her research on twitter.

dunBle · 16/04/2024 08:34

To the best of my recollection in addition to those mentioned above
Joanna Cherry - esp re single sex spaces and lesbian rights
Tonia Antoniazzi - esp re single sex spaces and female sport
Neale Hanvey - esp re the intersection with gay rights

PronounssheRa · 16/04/2024 08:44

Ben Bradshaw was poor too.

Much of his contribution was about Victoria McCloud, and he objected to the use of the phrase 'ideology'

AGlinnerOfHope · 16/04/2024 08:49

I am interested in which party they belong to. Wondering whether it’s easier to speak out in one party or another.

Fenlandia · 16/04/2024 09:06

Nick Fletcher

Mark Jenkinson has been active on this in the past

highame · 16/04/2024 09:06

Caroline Noakes got her comments in about violence against women but nicely swerved her TWAW ideological stance.

Is she completely oblivious?

GoBonobo · 16/04/2024 09:09

Don’t forget Mhairi Black, calling women who didn’t agree with her “Jeremy Hunts”in a YouTube video. And the poor random woman on Twitter she called out who was then subject to a pile in. Way to go for an elected representative!

Thank you. I’m interested beyond the debate though. I remember being surprised about David Davies, and the lack of support and traction when women first started raising this.

For such a long time, no one was talking about it. Then, one by one, they started raising their heads. Baroness Nicholson in the HoL, with Robert Winston backing her up. They really helped get the ball rolling. One conservative, one labour.

They talked about cross party support which is really important for this to keep moving, given the coming election.

Philip Hunt (Lab) in the HoL has also been very outspoken in defence of women

Caroline Lucas - Green - disappointing, but as many others have pointed out, (a) she's in the Greens, so it would be difficult for her to speak out and (b) she represents Brighton. The Greens want us to follow the science on environmental issues but that stance (for me) is totally undermined by their refusal to follow the science when it comes to gender issues.

Baroness Jenny Jones (Green) has been less disappointing, I believe, but of course has taken a lot of flak as a result.

Also in the Lords: Baroness Nicholson (Tory) has been an untiring supporter of common sense, writing letters constantly to high-ranking politicians and bureaucrats asking them to address issues brought to her attention by others.

My MP, Vicky Foxcroft (Labour, majority of 34000) is a good constituency MP and as far as I know is working hard on her role shadowing the Minister of State for Disabled People, Health and Work. As she has Goldsmiths in the constituency and used to have a large contingent of Momentum members from there and elsewhere in the constituency Labour Party, it's understandable but still regrettable that she's avoided speaking out on any gender-related issue other than in the usual platitudes. She can't be unaware of them. She also has the Deptford People Project in the constituency, not far from her office. I've linked to this 2018 article many times over the years. The bit about the Deptford Project starts about halfway through. A reminder of how far we've come (I hope). https://www.feministcurrent.com/2018/03/23/leftist-women-uk-refuse-accept-labours-attempts-silence-critiques-gender-identity/

Leftist women in the UK refuse to accept Labour's attempts to silence critiques of gender identity

Working class women and Labour Party members are incensed at being harassed and silenced in their attempts to discuss gender identity. But they are fighting back.

The MP from Alba was excellent, he spoke both in the main debate and later in the evening.
Atkins blew me away though.

Gasp0deTheW0nderD0g · 16/04/2024 09:20

The MP from Alba - Neale Hanvey?

Brilliant article, thank you. It takes me back- I think it was around those times I started paying attention. Perhaps a little earlier as I remember everything the article mentions.

Well done those women.

I was trying to remember Anne Ruzylo’s name when Maddigan came up again the other day.

I do hope she’s ok.

Jackie Doyle Price MP has been very clear and in command when talking on the Women and Equalities Committee; however I think she's standing down at the next election?

Angela Eagle MP and Ben Bradshaw MP are two Stonewall champions still committed to the cause.

AGlinnerOfHope · 16/04/2024 09:42

Having googled I’m thrilled to see Anne Ruzylo is still very active. I think she was the first person I noticed to have been actively displaced for her gender realist views.

AGlinnerOfHope · 16/04/2024 09:45

Jackie Doyle conservative
Angela Eagle and Ben Bradshaw conservative.

Penny Mordaunt is GI, isn’t she? Conservative? Not particularly vocal recently, perhaps sees which way the wind blows and trying to stay out of it.

I think Penny M is TWAW because her twin brother is a TRA?
