I'd thought that bobble hat hedgehog story was a bit suspect.

Greycheck · 05/04/2024 20:56

Ahh that would make sense if the bobble hat/hedgehog was one. I couldn't figure out with that one just how someone could be so dense. I get confusing it on the ground/at a distance etc but the fact it was in a box and so must have been handled made zero sense.

ArabellaScott · 05/04/2024 21:01

Well, he's a dick, so ...

WarriorN · 05/04/2024 21:08

Trying to stifle news about women's safety; nice look Joe. 🙃

I completely believed that. It’s the sort of shit I’d do.

NeighbourhoodWatchPotholeDivision · 05/04/2024 21:20

So what "fake news" did he think would have been reported instead?

This explains the hat bobble though. I couldn't figure out how you could pick up a discarded bobble but still continue to mistake it for a living creature.

TheLambtonWorm · 05/04/2024 21:26

What "hateful or polarising' stories I wonder...

ArabellaScott · 05/04/2024 21:29

He wants to try and control the news. Seems pretty controlling. The sort of thing someone who is so arrogant they think they ought to pick and choose what other people watch. And the kind of petty bully who thinks its hiLArious to trick people because it makes him feel clever.

MrsJamin · 05/04/2024 21:31

Like so, so many gay men, he's really, really bad at listening to women and believing them.

To be fair, I once rushed a 'badly injured' cat that had clearly just been hit by a car and was barely able to walk to the vet to discover that it was actually a perfectly healthy cat just living it's best life lying in the (quiet!) road on a sunny day. The limp was due to it having only three legs which I hadn't even noticed 🙃

That cat knew EXACTLY what it was doing 🤣

I liked the 'is it a hat bobble or a hedgehog?' story: it made feel that humans can be kind (in the proper sense) and that maybe there was some hope after all.

Now, if Lycet invented it (I haven't clicked the link) the world is shit again. Rather like Mr L himself.

He's bi. And what does him having some fun by planting stupid news stories have to do with listening to women?

SpicyMoth · 05/04/2024 23:35

Sounds about right for him tbh.

mumda · 05/04/2024 23:45

Should journalists have some journalism skills?

Should journalists have some journalism skills?

Possibly!
They obviously don’t have to have morals or ethics…

Oneofthesurvivors · 06/04/2024 01:37

Isn't this a problem with the calibre of journalists though? Isn't it their job to fact check?

Well, I rescued two separate frogs from being run over last week, if that helps? It's spring, so the frogs that matured in previous years were taking advantage of the rainy evening to migrate back to local ponds to spawn. Unfortunately, none of the frogs seem to know to wait until after humans are done commuting, so I had to scoop them up off the road, and on to the other side in the direction they were going.

Note: I think they were Common Frogs because of their skin, which was characteristically damp. The British common toad has drier skin, and is, in my own limited experience, also slower, making the species far less challenging to catch and rescue from traffic.

In an amusing coincidence, I had to pause this post while I went on an unexpected night-time walk to take another frog in the direction of the nearest body of water, this time because it had been brought into the house by my bewildered cat. Cat is now even more bewildered, because she cannot figure out where the frog is. It's where every creature you bring me goes, girl: back outside!

Yes, a bit. Although I don't think BBC verify is going to dedicate a crack team to fluff stories.

Frogs have really long legs and are excellent jumpers (the movement not the cold weather apparel) toads have shorter legs and tend to walk.

Well done for looking out for our little froggy friends, as their natural environment decreases they are finding it harder to have breeding grounds. (I have ponds of various sizes and have lots of frogs, spawn and tadpoles. They’re gorgeous things.)

Fenlandia · 06/04/2024 09:38

Does Joe Lycett know that websites, unlike newspapers, don't have a storage limit?? And that the hacks working to publish fluff pieces aren't generally the same ones who might publish stories about gender ideology?

Cancelledcurio · 06/04/2024 09:42

I imagine this is one of his made up stories to get attention because he is about as funny as brain cancer...
What a tedious knob.

RoyalCorgi · 06/04/2024 09:59

So, what's the big reveal? Is it going to turn out that the ludicrous Scottish Hate Crime Act is going to turn out to be a Joe Lycett prank?

PaperWalkAndTalk · 06/04/2024 10:04

Be kind he self-identifies as a comedian.

Cazpar · 06/04/2024 10:04

"For the last month, me and my team have been planting stupid, silly fake news stories, about things that never actually happened in the hope that they would take up space that more hateful or polarising fake news might otherwise have used."

He's not trying to suppress any genuine news stories.

He's always been one for big pranks. This isn't odd for him. And frankly it shines a light on how little due diligence our media does on stories they print. The Telegraph is particularly bad for it, the Mail actually less so in my opinion.
