"For the last month, me and my team have been planting stupid, silly fake news stories, about things that never actually happened in the hope that they would take up space that more hateful or polarising fake news might otherwise have used."

He's not trying to suppress any genuine news stories.

He's always been one for big pranks. This isn't odd for him. And frankly it shines a light on how little due diligence our media does on stories they print. The Telegraph is particularly bad for it, the Mail actually less so in my opinion.

I recently found out from Joe Lycett that "gullible" isn't in the dictionary.

Calling stuff "fake" news is used by everyone to discredit real news. The fact that he says "hateful" or "polarising" is key because we know what he's talking about; any negative news articles about certain groups of people.

I don't believe the media lie (to an extent), but their power comes from what they report and refuse to report. As these boards have shown, a lot of serious stories the media simply refuse to report. Most media outlets won't report on detransition and we know trans pressure groups have told media outlets to only report on positive trans stories and to never report on detransition.

Perhaps he could do some serious work and expose the legal loopholes that allow male sex offenders to pretend to be trans just before their trials?

Really can’t decide whether he’s funny/clever or just gives me the ick. I think it’s the latter.

Or, irritatingly, both, as is not infrequently the case in the world of entertainment!

Joe is a massive, massive troll. This is his thing. I'm not sure it's a surprise, is it? He admits to trolling people all the time!

It's a weird way of referring to news. News is either factual or not. He might have said 'misleading' or 'inaccurate', but he's not. He's used emotive terms.

People like Joe Lycett give me bad vibes. Can I say that? They remind me of the kind of boys (they were generally boys, girls did a different kind of mean) who would take the piss out of certain people in really quite cruel ways. Obviously, I have no way of knowing if he is or would have been like that but I do think his 'trolling' can seem that way sometimes. It's the kind of practical joke that in a way is designed to fool other people and make him look superior/clever but is rarely that funny. I can think of a whole load of other celebs who are similar. I won't name all the names here but I wasn't remotely surprised for example about Rebel Wilson's recent claims about Sascha Baron Cohen - he always seemed cruel too, which I know is meant to be part of his act, but I just found ... cruel. Anyway, slight derail, apologies for that.

Yes he trolls. And I’d understand if his prank was meant to highlight how easy it is to fill papers with fake news and fluff, that papers need to fact check better.

But that’s not why. He wants to fill the news because he doesn’t like the opinion pieces in them. He wants to leave less space for chatter.

Because he doesn’t like the chatter. If he did, he wouldn’t try and suppress it.

I think that’s outrageous. He’s got a team of people being paid to fill the news with pure shite so that they have less space to print what they’d like - what the public likes to read about. For any purpose I don’t think that’s right.

I might not like the news channel GB News but if someone drove round a signal blocker to stop people watching it I’d think that was shitty too.

I thought in the story of the hedgehog/bobble hat the photo was set up after they realised it wasn't a hedgehog, just as a humorous illustration of the story?

I think this could backfire on him - who will believe anything he says in future?

He's bi. And what does him having some fun by planting stupid news stories have to do with listening to women?

He mocks women who are concerned with trans ideology. I just wonder whether he's used this opportunity to either silence women or promote "trans rights".

CurlewKate · 07/04/2024 06:48

I once did an emergency stop for a crisp packet....

I don't understand this story. Obviously he doesn't think the news will get "full" if he plants stories about hedgehogs....

Yes, a bit. Although I don't think BBC verify is going to dedicate a crack team to fluff stories.

I don't know, they might. BBC Verify has a huge team and for what? Isn't it the BBC's actual job to make sure their news is correct?

Why do I suspect this might be it…
