How does Peter Boghossian still not understand women’s rights or anything other than Liberal Feminism?! He’s had lots of different women on his podcast in the last year and he really does not seem to have taken on board much of anything they say. Women’s arguments on lots of issues just seem to bounce off the front of his head. His views are fixed and that’s that for him.

I applaud these women for putting up with his faux naivety in interviews too.

Frankly, I’m rapidly coming to think that Boghossian is just a more polite version of James Lindsay.

I know what you mean Lasso, I simply don’t understand how he can possibly still be in the pre-peaking stage after speaking to so many erudite women (and men) about this issue. Even if he only had the empathic ability of a sponge he should have picked up on how dangerous and damaging to women, children and gay people this new ideology is.

And he hasn’t changed his opinion on teenage transition either - he says he sees it as purely a 'being of legal age and therefore responsible to make one’s own decisions' issue and never takes on board info about the brain needing to mature until mid-20s.

VERY frustrating and exasperating.

Yes exactly @UtopiaPlanitia . I mean, he’s a philosopher and I get that concepts around individual agency and bodily autonomy are sacred to him but to me, a responsible caring society shouldn’t be actively enabling even 18/25/35 year olds to cut off healthy body parts and all the rest - when (arguably) their problems are down to ill mental health of one kind or another. I feel myself becoming ever more extreme on this towards thinking that ideally hardly anyone should medically “transition” at all, that it should be a very last resort. The outcomes seem so often poor, even for adults.
I normally like PB and I was so disappointed in him here.

antigome · 10/04/2024 16:48

Generously maybe but perhaps he was just looking for a different answer? Along the lines of WTF?

He doubled down on TwiX on the view expressed in the interview that women need to learn to defend themselves if male violence is as prevalent as feminists are saying it is. 🤷‍♀️ He obviously thinks that.

Then I have no words-he has disappointed me with this. I can't wrap my head around it-he has had all the information and still maintains and incongruent view.

Kucinghitam · 11/04/2024 07:35

I think underneath the undoubtedly smart, usually-deep-thinking surface, he's still a sexist bloke who doesn't quite see women as fully functional humans. Same with all those others mentioned. Sadly, that is something many men (NAMALT, etc etc) share in common, whichever "side" they come down on.

Mostly, I just read/watch many commentators and go "Oh, they make good points on this topic, but they're utter pillocks on this other topic" etc etc.

I know what you mean antigome, his argument trivialises the fact that women have a legitimate worry.

I thought I’d best post a link to Boghossian’s tweet following on from his Dansky interview:

Like I said, prize turnip. Sigh.

BettyFilous · 11/04/2024 13:18

A peculiarly American perspective too. Most of us live in countries with gun licensing and restrictions.

BezMills · 11/04/2024 13:41

To be fair carrying a gun and knowing how to use it is actually an equaliser, unlike martial arts.

antigome · 14/04/2024 16:28

He is missing the mark again here... x.com/peterboghossian/status/1779237004904980983?s=46&t=LKPmDS2udS3Px-Uxn4cXVw

Urgh! Boghossian seems to be one of those 'do not restrict people’s freedom in any way, there is no such thing as duty owed to others in society' types, which despite his claims that he’s not Libertarian seems like a lot of US Libertarianism to me.

Complete lack of empathy, total contrarian, or a mind so open his good sense has fallen out - who knows…🤷‍♀️

Did that naughty lady, Bindel, not kowtow to the man view? Tut.

illinivich · 06/05/2024 19:01

Doing nothing is easy. It’s the default.

The problem is men in womens spaces. If every women learnt martial arts, would the NHS excluded men from womens wards without government intervention?

We are doing something, its that something he doesn’t like.

LassoOfTruth · 06/05/2024 22:28

His recent interview (after this Twitter spat presumably, I’m not on Twitter/X) with Julie Bindel was pretty good. He still doesn’t get it, but Bindel doesn’t hold back, and landed some great points I thought!

UtopiaPlanitia · 07/05/2024 00:44

Tiresome man!

I’m beginning to think he believes that because women aren’t as physically strong as men we’re lesser than men.

I can’t believe his 'suggestion' is that women arm themselves with guns and pepper spray…I mean, he hasn’t thought it through logically because I don’t think he would make it through one day without irritating a woman so much she’d squirt him with mace to make him stop mansplaining at her 😈

Maybe he imagines he has solved male violence against him personally by learning Jiu Jitsu. He hasn't. He'll still have little chance against two unarmed yoot or a surprise hit or 1 with a weapon. What keeps him safe is not JJ at all. It is his naice life situation, and largely avoiding danger by being middle class middle aged white male
So in his imagination he has solved male violence (he hasn't) and women should just all be like him, and male violence would go away, almost overnight. Silly women!

antigome · 07/05/2024 06:48

Even if we accepted that in order to keep ourselves safe from male violence women must practice martial arts and arm themselves-what about women and girls who exist outside of that ability-children, babies, disabled, elderly? They are on their own?

Yes indeed. I'm slightly troubled how the guy has got a blue belt and suddenly he's Ayn Rand

UtopiaPlanitia · 16/05/2024 16:19

I came across a description of the new Rationalist community that I think applies to Boghossian and particularly his recently claiming that because women don’t learn martial arts or carry weapons they are exaggerating their fear of male violence:

'I think “logic lord” types are sometimes drawn to contrarian positions because they like the strong emotional reactions that stating those positions induces in other people. It gives them a smug sense that they are dispassionate and logical and everyone else is blinded by emotion.'

I wondered as he was baiting Kara how I could keep myself safe with two bags of shopping, three small children and my trousers around my ankles.

I had quite liked watching him until that.

That is so well put! He seems to blithely ignore every aspect of women’s lives in his pontificating about us to us.

And yes, I could listen to him in small bursts because his ‘faux naive' questioning style got on my wick after a while but now I’m struggling to do even that.

Ouch, right on the nose! I have met a few of these online and in meatspace

AlisonDonut · 17/05/2024 06:06

He thinks women offering sex work is a good service to men.

Not sure he'd be ok with his daughter doing it, but as long as it is someone else's that's fine.
