The Countess Conference: Resisting Ideology - 27 April 2024 Dublin

The Countess Conference: Exploring the impact of gender ideology on Irish society across legislation, policy, education, culture, and sport.

The first National event to bring together ordinary women and men from across Ireland for discussion, debate, and insights from activists, thought leaders, and experts across key subject areas.

Join the fight for reality, for freedom of speech, for evidence-based healthcare, for the future of our society.

The Basics: What is gender ideology? Where did it come from? How has it infiltrated our government and influenced our laws?

The Hate Crime Legislation and Freedom of Speech: How will the Hate Crime Bill affect our ability to speak freely about gender ideology and other issues?

Youth transition and detransition: Who is “the trans child”? How can parents support their child? What happens when someone decides to desist or detransition?

Children, Education, and Safeguarding: How does gender ideology impact what our children are being taught? What harms might this bring? How can we as parents assert our rights? Why are single-sex spaces important and how can we fight to retain them in schools and clubs?

Sport: Why is it important to protect female categories in sport? Why are boys and men allowed to join teams and take places of girls and women?

LGFA policy allows boys over the age of twelve to join girls’ teams – how can we fight back?

Prisons and Self-ID: Men are being placed in female prisons in this country if they simply fill out a form that says they are a woman. There are no safeguards. What impact does this have on women prisoners and prison officers?

Legislation: The words woman and mother are being excised from legislation and policy. How significant is the recent referendum result?

Lesbian Erasure: What is happening in lesbian spaces? How can LGB young people be protected and supported when all the organisations are promoting gender ideology?

Women’s Spaces and Words: How important is it for women to speak up against the takeover of our spaces and our words? How can ordinary women organise and empower each other to raise awareness?

To fight this insidious ideology we first need to understand it and we need to join the dots!

I shared that and this one because it looks really interesting, and really important even for those who cant attend to know that somewhere some women are working and creating events that allow women to come together to meet, discuss and plan. Flowers

Gearóid O Loingsigh said he was withdrawing over the inclusion of Lumsden. Did she appear in the end? Perhaps she was the anti vaccine ranter mentioned by a poster.

Really? I hadn't heard about this, I'm not on Twitter so I miss loads. Who is Lumsden and why is she an issue?

Iloveshihtzus · 29/04/2024 13:30

Who is Gearóid O’Loinsigh?
Laoise made clear that they are a single issue organisation and will cooperate with others on policy but that does not mean they agree with all of the other people’s positions- I am like this, in fact most people are or used to be - it’s called politics!!! But now it seems you have to agree 10% with someone to join forces with them (how will anyone ever achieve change if this is their policy?). I think it’s a cop
out and a way to avoid actively getting down and dirty and being part of governing instead of shouting from the sideline, kind of like permanent student politics.

HornyHornersPinkyWinky · 29/04/2024 14:21

Laoise made clear that they are a single issue organisation and will cooperate with others on policy but that does not mean they agree with all of the other people’s positions

Yes I'm glad she made that speech at the beginning of the conference - and I agree, on this issue I will align with whoever will help, it doesn't mean I agree with or support all of their ideas.

I think Gearóid was someone who spoke before about the issues in Irish prisons - Barbie Kardashian, etc. So maybe he was going to give an update on that. Not sure though.

Mermoose · 29/04/2024 14:23

Gearóid O’Loinsigh is a campaigner on prisoners' rights. He's worked in various prisons, if I remember right. He's given good interviews on the problems of including males who identify as trans in female prisons.
I definitely think that purity spirals can happen and are unhelpful. I also think that organisations can hamper themselves if they associate with individuals who are easily dismissed. I'd be interested to know why O'Loinsigh decided not to share a stage with Lumsden - I don't know who she is but I think everyone has to choose for themselves who they associate with, so long as they don't try to choose for other people.

Iloveshihtzus · 29/04/2024 14:39

Well her speech at the conference was very informative and I think some people need to open their minds. But then I’m happy to be called conservative these days because the liberal progressives don’t represent me as a mother.

Mermoose · 29/04/2024 14:49

I think some people need to open their minds

I don't think it's a case of being closed-minded. Just as I don't blame women who will no longer have anything to do with TRAs, I don't blame O'Loingsigh for drawing the line at someone who has opinions and tactics he sees as deeply objectionable. I just think people need to decide for themselves - if he starts badgering anyone who did attend, then I'd say he's falling into a purity spiral.

MarieDeGournay · 29/04/2024 15:04

I think he has a strong point. It's not like the KJK and the Fascists accusations, this speaker, who campaigns about things like 'mass immigration', 'the destruction of farming' and against vaccination, was actually invited to speak.
Ó Loinsigh [there's no apostrophe in original non-Anglicised Irish surnames] obviously thought that 'my enemy's enemy is my friend' only goes so far, and he drew the line at sharing a platform with JL, who he disagrees with profoundly on matters of principle, just because there's a crossover re gender issues.

Scotcheggz · 26/04/2024 22:34

Jana Lunden is the Irish version of kjk

I posted earlier in this thread (hint reading a thread can be informative!) about twitter rumours of speakers withdrawing this helpful response was post as I too had not heard on Lunden.

So if there was one withdrawal (which is sad) I think that is off course their right.

But glad that the majority decided the shared issue was worth being on the same platform.

Any reports in the media about the event?

Good? Bad? Or just silence?

MarieDeGournay · 29/04/2024 17:55

'Jana Lunden is the Irish version of kjk'.

That's only true if KJK is in the 'mass immigration', antivaxxer camp, which JL seems very active in. Maybe KJK is, in which case I wouldn't want to share a platform with her either!

Joolsin · 29/04/2024 18:17

I didn't rate Jana Lunden as a speaker: it was the glorification of motherhood to a schmaltzy degree that first turned me off, followed by the anti-vax stuff. She mentioned the libraries in passing, slightly lamely saying she couldn't stop anyone else jumping on her bandwagon, but I didn't know she was directly linked to the far right shower.

Have come across this whilst searching facebook.

Even if you are not on facebook you should be able to read just by closing the sign in box.

Yes, its our old friends Gender Critical Left who make it sound like there was an organised resignation of speakers:

No luck, Facebook wanted me to login to read it and I don’t have a FB account 😵 - but thanks for the update. It doesn’t surprise me that such a take on the event would be spread by certain (exasperating) people.

Scotcheggz · 07/05/2024 19:51

What do you mean ‘our old friend Gender critical left’? I’ve thought we’re all strangers here ?

IwantToRetire · 07/05/2024 20:33

Facebook wanted me to login to

Well I was able to read it just by dismissing the log in box using the X in the top right corner. Didn't you get that option?

‘our old friend Gender critical left’

They have come up on multiple threads because of being or some are part of WPUK and the inordinate amount of time they obsess about KJK and authors. But the dots were only joined on this thread https://www.mumsnet.com/talk/womens_rights/4662757-womens-place-uk-filia-event-the-elephant-ignored-yet-again?page=27&reply=121163378

Nope, I followed your suggestion but the FB link opened a login page with no option to click out of it. I think FB do it to make people create accounts but I’m stubborn and refuse to give in 😬

Are you using a computer or mobile?

If its a mobile, its possible the sign in box fills the smaller screen.

I can read facebook accounts without signing in using a desktop.

At the weekend there was an event in Dublin billed in the following way: "The Countess conference exploring the impact of gender ideology on Irish society across legislation, policy, education, culture, and sport. This national event will bring together ordinary women and men from across Ireland for discussion, debate, and insights from activists, thought leaders, and experts across key subject areas"

I am not going to do potted bios of all people on the bill, or those that came to withdraw due to the last minute inclusion of Jana Lunden. All are readily searchable. Posie Parker/Kellie Jay-Keen was the keynote speaker which should have been reason enough to discourage the participation of anyone concerned about their reputation and credibility. That said, some people did decline to take part for reasons of political principle and we should commend them for drawing a line.

Drop outs include Gearoid O'Loinsigh, Annaig Birdy, Aja, Rhona Hotchkiss, Jon Pike & Stella O'Malley.

There have been a couple of statements giving reasons for their non participation which I'll post below.

Statement from @cleancitybird (Annaig Birdy) and @Aja02537920 (Aja)

"It is with a heavy heart that we have had to make the difficult decision to withdraw from participating in the upcoming conference on Saturday, April 27th. After careful consideration, we feel compelled to take this action due to our concerns regarding Jana Lunden' associations with violent individuals. This speaker was added at a later date, subsequent to our agreement to speak. We have had to make the decision to step back due to the likely presence of some of the violent men associated with this speaker. The presence of these men, such as Andy Heasman, whose violent actions undermine the feminist cause and perpetuate a culture war, deeply trouble us, as we know if it were a slightly different setting, we could be targeted by those men.

While we acknowledge the principles of inclusivity within our movement, we are of the firm belief that there must be a line drawn when it comes to tolerating individuals who espouse violence and hatred. Inviting speakers with close ties to these individuals, inadvertently invites their audience and supporters, including those who perpetrate violence against marginalized communities. Neither of us are a proponent of cancel culture or deplatforming, and advocate for freedom of speech and diverging opinions.

However, it is imperative to recognize the difference between political disagreement and the endorsement of violence. Individuals like Andy Heasman do not represent the working class; they exploit movements to further their racist, homophobic, and anti-woman agendas. Despite our excitement and anticipation for this conference, we cannot ignore the profound discomfort we feel at the prospect of spending a day in the company of individuals whose beliefs and actions contradict everything we stand for. We trust that the conference will be well managed, with strong security, but we feel it is not the environment to share testimonies as lesbians. We thank@TheCountessIE for the opportunity, and for the work they have put into organising a large scale event. We will record the talk we intended to deliver, so lesbian voices are still heard. Sincerely, Annaig, Aja and Not All Gays

Statement by Gearóid Ó Loingsigh on his withdrawal from The Countess RDS Gender Critical Conference
Gearóid Ó Loingsigh24 April 2024

"I had been scheduled to speak at the RDS event organised by The Countess on a panel discussing prisons and the housing of males in the female estate, alongside Rhona Hotchkiss and Paddy O’Gorman, two very knowledgeable people on the issue and I was looking forward to it. There were other professionals in their field such as Stella O’ Malley who are due to speak on other aspects. Such events by their nature often include a wide variety of opinions, some of them not exactly complementary to each other. This conference was no exception. I decided to let the fact that the sole speaker on media censorship was from Gript. It is a right-wing Catholic media, but not that much further to the right on many issues than The Irish Times, despite its liberal reputation.

However, the last-minute decision to invite far right activist Jana Lunden to speak on education was a bridge too far. Lunden came to prominence during the protests over sexually inappropriate material being available in children’s libraries rather than adult libraries. These books were eventually relocated to the adult section thanks to back room lobbying by others. Lunden’s response was to gather a bunch of far-right males to storm libraries threatening staff. They didn’t just object to sexually inappropriate material for kids but anything that gave a positive image of gay people.

It was said to me that the presence of far-right thugs Andy Heasman and Fergus Power at rallies with her was accidental, they just turned up, but there are lots of photos of them together. There is even one rather bucolic photo of them all on a boat. They are anti-migrant, racists, homophobes and anti-working class, dividing us on the base of race or nationality and blaming the failings of the Irish state on those who had nothing to do with the mess FF and FG have us in i.e. they blamed migrants and the working class.

The issue shows the limitation of the Gender Critical movement in Ireland, which has failed to mark off a distance with such people and has included figures that are clearly homophobic and anti-feminist. There is a need for a GC movement that fights for women on all issues, including “older” issues such as abortion, divorce, contraception, sexuality and of course the modern invasion of women’s spaces, representation and sports. The invite to Jana Lunden, who presumably will turn up with the usual far-right thugs was the last straw. These people do not defend women, when the opportunity arises they will turn on women and lesbians in particular.

I will continue to advocate for prisons as a single sex space and write about it. But I can no longer associate with those who think that the broad church of a GC movement which includes liberals and even some standard right wingers from Fianna Fáil is in fact an elastic band that can be stretched to breaking point and beyond.

Unfortunately, most reformist leftists such as PbP, Rise and Rosa have all jumped on the bandwagon attacking women’s spaces and demanding that males have access to them and participate in women’s sports and this leaves little room for the building of a more progressive GC movement. However, I am not willing to tolerate Andy Heasman and his thugs".

(As this group is mainly North American the comments in response are all about how there is no information about Jana Lunden on line and what are her issues etc..

The annonymous poster whose post it is above, then came up with this as evidence https://twitter.com/soundmigration/status/1666192445904674827 and for those not on twitter it is a tweet from a lone male saying "she promotes the conspiracy theory that seats in children's hospitals have a 'secret Pedo symbol' for some unclear purpose, only known to her batshit hate merchant followers." )
