Times Radio - Matt Chorley, India Knight on JK Rowling

Hi all, I was listening to this podcast the other day. Matt Chorley and India Knight were talking about JK Rowling, along with some bloke from The Times, specifically discussing her comment on India Willoughby cosplaying femininity. Anyone else listening? It was hilarious and infuriating and as always revealing. The gist of it was why was JK Rowling so mean, and why couldn't she just be nice and polite, because that would get her further. It was so .... awful and ignorant! And then India Knight made what she seemed to think was a killer point, that all woman are performing femininity when they apply make-up.. she seemed to have no awareness that that is the POINT. Isn't it? That femininity is always a performance - but that this is not what makes us female. Why are people so stupid about this?!?

Why are people so stupid about this?!?

Maybe because they haven’t thought beyond the superficial flippant answers? Maybe they don’t feel the need to because it doesn’t impact them directly and they don’t wish to move beyond what their influence groups think?

nauticant · 12/03/2024 08:41

Is India Knight still shacked up with Eric Joyce, the ex-MP who was convicted for downloading child abuse images?

SmugglersHaunt · 12/03/2024 08:46

I wouldn't listen to anything India Knight says. Anyone who can stay married to a convicted paedophile is a no-mark

nauticant · 12/03/2024 08:51

It's a mystery why India Knight would be opposed to someone actively engaged in campaigning for safeguarding.

WinterTrees · 12/03/2024 08:56

Agree with pps.

India Knight's moral compass is defunct and her ability to identify abusive predatory behaviour seems to be inversely proportional to her capacity to minimise and dismiss it. Anyone who gives her a platform to air her opinion on this, or any other matter even distantly related to the safeguarding of women and girls, is either woefully ignorant or similarly dismissive of the importance of protecting females from abusive males.

IamRoyFuckingKent · 12/03/2024 08:58

I used to like India Knight and buy books she wrote and stuff she recommended but no more.

agree

User19792 · 12/03/2024 09:14

Knight is an apologist for a violent nonce. How about some kindness for the babies her husband watched being abused or the teenager he attacked?

CorruptedCauldron · 12/03/2024 09:31

I hope they provided some context to JKR’s “cosplay” comments. Did they refer to the endless goading and insults JKR has received from this person, I wonder? Did they refer to IW’s deliberate misgendering of a fellow TW, and gleeful anticipation of said TW “popping his clogs”? Why should JKR pussyfoot around this person who tweeted about wanting to kidnap her and other gender-critical women?

Coffeelovr · 12/03/2024 10:08

Is there a link available?

afternoonoflife · 12/03/2024 10:29

IK can’t put her daughter ahead of her sex offender partner so I agree with pps anything she says can be ignored.

BackToLurk · 12/03/2024 10:42

I'm pretty sure Mr India Knight was also an advocate for mixed-sex toilets. Cannot imagine why

Mollyollydolly · 12/03/2024 11:54

I went right off Matt Chorley ages ago when he had Ben Cohen on from Pink News and appeared very pally with him. Never trusted anything he said since then.

Sususudio · 12/03/2024 11:56

I find it astonishing that IK still thinks she is an authority on anything. However, she does have a daughter who is now a transman, I believe.

Coffeelovr · 12/03/2024 13:42

Unfortunately "Politics without the boring bits" seems to mean women's rights are boring

Cazpar · 12/03/2024 13:49

I don't really think it's on to berate IK for staying with a violent bully. Given the behaviour that twat enacts so frequently in public, I don't want to think of what she probably faces behind closed doors.

We know women can be too terrified to leave these men. That doesn't change because she's high profile.

If this is true then it tells you where her loyalties lie. Many people who are publicly going along with this are doing so because their own children are caught up in it.

teawamutu · 12/03/2024 14:01

As others have said, I'd take IK's recommendations on mascara, but nothing deeper.

I'm assuming Matt Chorley is a typical 'now I'm sure this is all very simple as long as women are kind which won't inconvenience me in the least ' type (see, the recent BIL thread).

Musomama1 · 12/03/2024 14:02

I find it astonishing that all these supposedly clever people are missing the point with JKRs tweets.

JKR doesn't need to do any of this, but she does because she has a spine of steel. She's puncturing some people's preferred reality. Throwing a spanner in the works. And being a one woman activist for reality and true speak - even if it offends some.

She's not sitting there being a big old meanie. She knows what she's doing and she's one of the few uncancellables who can culturally stem the tide on this 1984 shit.

hallouminatus · 12/03/2024 14:38

India Knight thinks J. K. Rowling is "really rude and also mean".

India Knight previously wrote of former colleague Liz Jones that she had "taken a break from wanking her cat", and called her "mad", a "rancid cunt" and "sort of self-pollinating cancer".

Sizzlysausage · 12/03/2024 16:17

Good point @hallouminatus I mean .. it's all very cosy isn't it, if you write for The Times I guess you're just all good mates.

I've already written a strongly worded email to Jane and Fi for the bollocks they went along with when they interviewed Caster Semanya. On a later episode, they said many people had written in thanking them for the interview but they had just 'one or two' who were less positive. Their take seemed to be that the latter were rather ridiculous and/or unhinged.

Now I feel like I need to write a strongly worded email to Matt Chorley but I don't think there's any point. It's all so depressing.

Chorley has been treating women's rights as a joke for years. He's the reason I no longer listen to Times Radio.

^ This.

Yep Fi and Jane think we’re unhinged.

Matt Chorley had Janice Turner on years ago when she was one of the few who spoke out. He had no clue then and has clearly not bothered himself since then to find out any more.
