On the face of it this is a positive campaign and a much needed change in the law, but the slogan they've chosen has left me absolutely speechless.

Surely this is sending the wrong message?? Repurposing what men say to excuse the sexual abuse and rape they inflict upon women is so beyond the pale. Just no.

Bloody hell, Ohcantthinkofaname! What is the matter with people?

  • * * *
This reminds me of that Twitter exchange about tampons last year, when the Tampax account tweeted something like "You are [something, something]. We are inside them. We are not the same." I can't remember who the other party was, but essentially it was a joke between men about girls and women in an area which is all about women. Same energy here - only people who don't ever really worry about being raped, or have never been raped and blamed or disbelieved, would come up with something like this.

Also, nobody is going to read the bit along the bottom of the poster. They'll be too busy sniggering or being furious about the main heading.

Coffeestain · 06/03/2024 20:28

I also hate this. I get the idea of reclaiming a slur, but no, it’s vile - especially written across a sexy female face.

Good Law Project too.

It's not a needed change to the law. The absolute last thing women need is the Sexual Offences Act being opened up. It's fine. It's men's behaviour that isn't.

Ah well, good old jolyon, never let's a mistake get in his way. Or a fox.

AlisonDonut · 06/03/2024 20:55

Is one of the Good Law project directors still a director of Mumsnet?

Winnading · 06/03/2024 20:55

2000 PEOPLE WERE QUESTIONED (999 WOMEN, 993 MEN AND SIX NON-BINARY RESPONDENTS) BETWEEN 21ST – 27TH DECEMBER 2023. RESEARCH CARRIED OUT BY PERSPECTUS GLOBAL.

6 non binary, hmmmm I smell the stench of men. Look at the dates, right over Christmas when everyone's busy af, drunk, eating, etc.

Chinny reckon this was deliberate to get the answers they wanted.

Ereshkigalangcleg · 06/03/2024 21:09

Won't defendants simply lie that the victim said yes rather than she (generally) didn't say no?

Brefugee · 07/03/2024 07:40

it is not landing at all well on Twitter/X. I checked out their hashtag and it's mostly people complaining or saying #AffermativeConsent is already a thing and the law needs to be implemented better, judges need to sentence better and the police need to get off their backsides and listen to women then do their job

Boiledbeetle · 07/03/2024 07:49

Peskysquirrel · 06/03/2024 19:25

Those T-shirts!!! Who the hell's going to wear that?

Surely Rape Crisis can't agree with this?? They are linked at the bottom of the website.

Edited to add: They are asking people to use the hashtag #ImAskingForIt. Honestly, I have NO WORDS.

Edited

Hopefully no one.

I'll admit i saw the image that was in the OP yesterday whilst mindless scrolling on the internet, and never clicked because I assumed it was something horrible. Never in my wildest dreams did I think it was a campaign about getting affirmative consent.

It's actually stomach churning.

Ereshkigalangcleg · 06/03/2024 21:09

Good heavens, NO!

Men don't lie about that sort of thing . . .

Woman2023 · 07/03/2024 07:56

It's absurd because consent is ongoing throughout sex. As soon as either party show any signs of not wanting to continue the sexual activity should stop with "are you okay?"

That's normal behaviour.

Continuing because a woman said "yes" half an hour ago is rape.

KohlaParasaurus · 07/03/2024 08:09

Hideous. And appears to make unwarranted assumptions about the likelihood of people taking a couple of minutes to check out what the underlying message is rather than just seeing the triggering words on a female face or clothing. This couldn't be AT ALL deliberate, could it?

Oh it’s Proudman, that explains why it’s shit. How to turn a great idea into a terrible reality. She’s desperate to be famous - she wouldn’t think about this slogan for more than 10 seconds other than ‘will it get my name in the papers’.

Considering her website, I'm astounded that she's thought that this is OK, never mind great:

https://www.charlotteproudman.com/

Charlotte is an award-winning barrister, academic, and campaigner. Charlotte represents survivors of rape, domestic abuse and controlling behaviour in the family courts...

SinnerBoy · 07/03/2024 10:25

I see that Charlotte has a protected Twitter account.

IwantToRetire · 07/03/2024 17:12

The other thing I thought when first seeing this yesterday is that if this is meant to get men thinking a bit more critically about their behaviour its a huge own goal.

Without generalising, but given that even Scottish Law says men up to the age of 25 are too immature to recognise the sexaul assault is wrong, I suspect that many (particulary younger) men will see this and just laugh with it other. Nudge, nudge, wink, wink.

Emotionalsupportviper · 07/03/2024 20:22

Scottish Law says men up to the age of 25 are too immature to recognise the sexaul assault is wrong

It also says that children as young as four can recognise that they are the "wrong gender", so I think Scottish Law must be even more of an ass than English Law.

IwantToRetire · 08/03/2024 01:30

This is now being reported by main stream media https://www.itv.com/news/2024-03-07/rape-survivors-divided-over-consent-campaign-tagline-im-asking-for-it

What is so strange is that if you have launched a campaign and women wno it is meant to be supporting dont like or are shocked by it, surely your response should be we thought it would help, but sorry if you dont like it. Not a lecture that you should have understood it is up to you to "reclaim it".

This is the problem with celebrity / media feminism. Complete numpties who may briefly have had something to say / contribute then become over blown by lazy disinterested "reporters" who hate the fact that some one who is happy to comment on anything isn't usually the appropriate person. eg ITV didn't even bother to ask Rape Crisis what they thought.

LSTMS30555 · 08/03/2024 02:19

Are they're making one for men and children as well?
HE WAS ASKING FOR IT
THAT CHILD WAS ASKING FOR IT
I think the fuck not!
It's outrageous they thought that slogan was a "good" idea.

I must keep reminding myself obviously only us women invite rape & are obviously asking for it 🤮🤢

doubleshotcappuccino · 08/03/2024 03:01

Firstly thank you so much for posting this. Secondly what the actual F. Seriously in which meeting and which right mind thought, yep, this is what we should have women wear . This is like some kind of Andrew Tate horrible joke - and what a shame because the campaign itself is in a good cause. My flabber is gasted.

Anxiulyyy · 08/03/2024 03:16

Gosh, I'm trying to think of what a good replacement would be and I can't think of a single good one. They all sound piss poor. I think this whole idea needs to be shelved. So far I thought of;

I consented
I'm enthusiastic
I said yes, yes, yes!

Yeah, they all sound shit. I don't think there is a phrase that can encapsulate ongoing enthusiastic consent, without someone looking at it for a loophole.

Sussurations · 08/03/2024 03:20

Whoever came up with this seems
to think consent is the sexual equivalent of firing a starting pistol.

it’s an immature and pornographic way of looking at sex that wholeheartedly promotes the idea that sex is something done to women by men.

it’s really offensive.
