I had no idea women got a whole month!!!

I can't wait to see the flags flying from every government building and all the celebrations of women in history everywhere. 😊

I hope that Hipparchia's brave and dignified response to her opponent's action actually shamed him in front of everyone.

That's men*, though - if a woman opposes you and you can't refute her arguments, use brute strength to intimidate her.

*I know, I know NAM . . . 🙄

JanesLittleGirl · 07/03/2024 12:09

Hipparchia the Cynic. How wonderful is that?

I might just change my username.

Happy International Women's Day!

Heres an account of the reconstruction of a woman's face based on the remains of a 45,000 year old skull found in a cave in the Czech Republic. The oldest human remains found, homo sapiens but closely linked to Neanderthal.

It's here!

It's INTERNATIONAL WOMEN'S DAY

Let's hope it a day of companies championing women and not men with special feelings.

SinnerBoy · 08/03/2024 07:50

Have a good IWD, ladies.

my favourite bit of women’s history that I recently learned of. No doubt her shortish hair will lead to somebody trying to trans her in the near future.

Edited

Thanks for sharing that was an interesting read.

Go Sophie.

So shopping to day we were in one shop that had little ‘women owned company’ notices on some shelves and a big window display showing photos and company logos of ‘women owned/run companies’

i paused to play ‘spot the ball’ as you do with any ‘women only’ list these days, and the man next to me (who’d also stopped to look) nodded at one photo and said ‘that’s a bloke’.

I think people are getting tired of ‘days, weeks, months, seasons of…’ and the fact that some people always pop up in ‘women only’ categories who shouldn’t be there.

What do they were saying something was a woman's book but it was actually by a man?

HoneyButterPopcorn · 08/03/2024 09:05

So just went into bbc sounds. ‘ IWD content’ . Paris lees. For goodness sake …

HoneyButterPopcorn · 08/03/2024 12:21

And on the BBC news page about IWD… at the bottom ‘is there and international Men’s Day?’ Of course. 🙄

Here's a brilliant project - this woman is bringing historical female explorers to the forefront:

https://www.womanwithaltitude.com/

'I'm adventurer Lise Wortley, and with an all-female team in tow, I've been on a transformational journey, bringing to life the incredible stories of history's forgotten female adventurers, by literally walking in their footsteps, using only what was available to them at the time. Throughout history, women adventurers and explorers have been overshadowed by their male counterparts. This project seeks to highlight these ground-breaking women's stories and achievements, while challenging traditional narratives of adventurers being fearless and male. This project raises money for women's charities along the way and supports female adventure guides in the regions we visit. '

A whole page of women adventurers!

Right, if we are doing this ourselves, I'm going for a modern historical moment for women, which will go down in history, that follows on from a long line of women throughout history who have lifted their skirts in anger and frustration.

On 22nd December 2022, immediately after the passing of the Gender Recognition Reform (Scotland) Bill in Holyrood, Elaine Miller, a pelvic physiotherapist, and occasional wearer of a very fetching vulva costume, stood up in the public gallery and shouted:

“If this parliament will not respect the rights of women, then you have no decency. And if you will not be decent towards women who are being raped in jails right now that you’re in charge of, if you will not be decent, then I will be indecent. Get it right up yers. You TERRIBLE TERRIBLE people.”

And as she started to shout “then I will be indecent…” she raised her skirt and, thanks to an MSP with a phone on record, the world got a fantastic view of a fun fur merkin stuck to the front of her tights.

Elaine Miller - absolute Great of all time

Redpencil99 · 09/03/2024 22:09

Ellen Wilkinson, MP for Jarrow when the march was on, fought for the rights of workers. Never married, had many liaisons, died of cancer. Heroine of the working class. Labour should hang its head in shame

Rosalind Franklin
Jocelyn Bell Burnell

Both female scientists who missed out on Nobel prizes, Franklin because she had the temerity to die before the prizes for DNA were given out, and Burnell because she was missed off the paper that described the discovery of pulsars, which she discovered

@ArabellaScott
You’ll enjoy Karin Bojs book My European Family; The 54 000 first years.

It follows haplo-groups only transferred in female mithocondria. Traces females and their movement around the continent + some of their historical achievements.
A lovely book.

Oh no, but don't you see? That genetic indicator will suddenly pop into existence in the chromosomes of males because of a certificate and a dress, of course!!

https://www.ncdv.org.uk/giulia-tofana-serial-killer-or-heroine/

Let's have a notorious woman from history, today:

'Giulia was born in Sicily in 1620, and had a modest but relatively happy childhood. That was until she was 13 years old when her mother was executed for murdering her husband – Giulia’s father. Things then took a very dark turn for Giulia.
It is thought that Giulia was taught how to make poison by either her mother, or a family friend. For nearly 20 years, she made bottles of poison which was a combination of arsenic, deadly nightshade and lead. She called it Aqua Tofana and it was bottled to look like face cream and was packaged with a picture of St Nicholas – who was the patron saint of children and unmarried people. St Nicholas was famous for helping young women and girls escape what we now call sex traffickers.
The lethal ingredients would apparently cause cold-like symptoms before the unlucky victim dropped dead several days later. The poison was completely undetectable, which meant that women could seemingly commit the perfect crime by killing their abusive husbands and getting away with it, leaving them to be free from the abuse.'

Serial killer

Giulia Tofana - Serial killer or Heroine?!

Giulia Tofana may be one of the most deadly serial killers ever and chances are you won’t have heard of her!

Her story was in the Guardian, some time back. I didn't remember her name, but certainly her story.

ArabellaScott · 11/03/2024 20:59

Thanks both. We're not even halfway through March yet! I was only on Greeks before I got distracted.

Less time travel and back to antiquity tomorrow. The research is great fun!

Someone upthread mentioned the Bletchley women so I thought I’d mention that Dr Sally Waugh has been researching the 70+ of them who’d studied at Newnham College. With the College Archivist (Frieda Midgley) & a Fellow Emerita of History (Dr Gillian Sutherland) she’s developed the research into an exhibition. I’m aware most people are unlikely to be at a lose end in Cambridge on random weekday afternoons next week; but in the more likely event of you being able to get there at the weekend in September, it will be included in this year’s Open Cambridge (dates tbc apparently 🤷🏻‍♀️). Newnham also has the banner being carried in the photo at the top of this article about Newnhamite suffrage campaigners on display - & as it’s by the Buttery (ie dining hall) doubtless it would be available to view then too. As it’s outside term you might be able to see the replica that lives in the library.

(Newnham, should you be wondering, has not been razed to the ground for being a Women’s College because technically they accept TW. But you have to provide ID listing you as female when you apply. At undergrad, that knocks [almost?] everyone out of the running before they even submit the paperwork. Crucially, Murray Edwards [the College Formerly Known As New Hall] is all about self-ID & is flooding out the narcissistic supply & validation by insisting they’re a [still] a women’s College despite the fact they’ve rolled out the red carpet for any men who claim to “identify” as women 🤦🏻‍♀️)
