Abigail Shrier who published Irreversible Damage a few years ago has a new book out, called Bad Therapy. I've just started it.

May be of interest as although it is not about trans issues it touched upon the rise in poor teen mental
Health and our response to it. She is doing the podcast rounds atm and has done Rogan, Bari Weiss and Bridget Phetasy. I imagine she will do Triggernometry.

I find her to be a courageous voice on these issues although I don't agree either her on everything.

I've just listened to the Michael Shermer podcast with Abigail Shrier and what I found helpful as a parent of teens is that yes they can go through crap times and be all over the place emotionally but they will get through it. As their parent I'm one of the best people that can help them although I may not perfect. It's reassuring to hear that sometimes being firm is the best way forward, this helps me when I'm being guilt tripped. I find myself pussy footing around & doubting my parental skills at times especially as there is so much focus on teens mental health & being kind these days!!

I was quite an anxious teen - got terribly homesick & nervous about new things but with hindsight I'm glad my parents pushed me as much as they could, otherwise I would not have accomplished some of the things that I have.
What they really should be focussing on to help our young people today is sorting out social media - as discussed in Jonathon Haidt's new book - Anxious Generation.
I also found Stella O Malley book useful and in a similar vein.

I’m going to use one of my Audible credits to listen to the book - I found Irreversible Damage very interesting and useful so I have high hopes for this book too.

I had a similar reaction as a mom of a teen and young adult. When we've pushed them, lovingly but firmly, we've seen better results. Of course, like all things it can be taken too far but we do our kids no favors when we act like small fears should stop them from pushing through. Anxiety and frustration are normal human emotions and we have to teach kids to move through it, not mask or shelter them from it.
