Justice for Emma Caldwell

And some of the other women this bastard raped and abused.

My thoughts are with Emma's mother. Such a very long time to get justice. I hope she has some peace knowing Packer will no longer be free to harm women.

And for once, well done the BBC, whose investigation kickstarted a fresh look at the case.

Emma Caldwell

Iain Packer found guilty of Emma Caldwell murder

Packer has been jailed for at least 36 years - the second longest sentence handed out by a Scottish court.

I wondered similar. Packer attended sex parties somewhere around Glasgow (one woman who was a witness confirmed this). Who else was at these gatherings?

Signalbox · 05/03/2024 17:38

There are a shocking number of unsolved murders in the uk.

It’s hard to believe Packer would have stopped after murdering just one woman. I wonder if they are re looking at any other unsolved disappearances.

That article was 2013, I assume nothing came of it.

Nothing did but maybe now the media will pick it up or the Public Inquiry?

ArabellaScott · 07/03/2024 22:05

I hope the enquiry is thorough and productive.

The Mail has this to say, from the he family's lawyer Aamer Anwar:

https://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-13169741/Emma-Caldwells-killer-Iain-Packer-convicted-2008-familys-lawyer-claims-Scottish-Government-confirms-inquiry-held-killer-evaded-justice-two-decades.html

Emma Caldwell's killer Iain Packer could have been convicted in 2008, her family's lawyer claims, as the Scottish Government confirms an inquiry will be held into how killer evaded justice for almost two decades.

Speaking outside the Crown Office following the meeting, the family's lawyer Aamer Anwar said: 'The Lord Advocate confirmed that had the solicitor general and her instruction been followed through by Strathclyde Police, on the available evidence in 2008 the Lord Advocate and her team believe there was a sufficiency for prosecuting Iain Packer for murder.

Will we ever find out if it was incompetence, or a malign act, on the part of the Police?

ithinkitsdone · 08/03/2024 10:24

i dont think it was incompetence.
The police had all the evidence there but someone for some reason made a decision not to arrest and pursue him in spite of all that.
i think the crown office is pushing themselves out of the frame by saying that if the police had arrested packer, and brought the case to them, then they would have delivered justice.

Corruption at best. Collusion at worst.

Prove me wrong, Scotgov.

'Nearly 300 rapes and sexual assaults reported by sex workers during the Emma Caldwell murder investigation were not dealt with by police at the time, a senior officer has confirmed.
Police Scotland’s deputy chief constable said an operation had been launched to examine sex offences which were reported around 2005.
She said a number of the offences were now being dealt with by the courts.
A former detective told the BBC he had received multiple reports of rape when he worked on the murder inquiry.
But he said they were “boxed” – marked as irrelevant and not followed up.

Horrific. And it won't have just been this investigation. Those poor women.

Carebearsonmybed · 10/06/2024 21:44

Disgusting

Ramblingnamechanger · 10/06/2024 21:47

Poor women indeed. But I really hate the term sex worker.
