Justice for Emma Caldwell

ArabellaScott · 28/02/2024 16:12

And some of the other women this bastard raped and abused.

My thoughts are with Emma's mother. Such a very long time to get justice. I hope she has some peace knowing Packer will no longer be free to harm women.

And for once, well done the BBC, whose investigation kickstarted a fresh look at the case.

Emma Caldwell

Iain Packer found guilty of Emma Caldwell murder

Packer has been jailed for at least 36 years - the second longest sentence handed out by a Scottish court.

The article did make it sound like someone was protecting Parker.

As an aside, I was curious on the comments about the sentencing, i.e. that he has the second longest term imposed by a Scottish Court (36 yrs) - the longest is Angus Sinclair, at 37 years for the Worlds End murders. I'd have thought Peter Tobin would be up there, but it turns out that although he eventually got a whole life order this was set by an English court in Chelmsford, and whole life orders don't exist in Scotland.

I do wish they would stop referring to her as a sex worker. Yes she was but she was also a woman. A daughter and a sister and a friend.

Emma would never have called herself that and neither would alot of the other women involved.

i think Routes Out offers direct support to women and they do outreach with women in street prostitution. they might be an option?

Thanks.

@ithinkitsdone every article just keeps saying 'the sex worker'. It's horrible. Like what's that got to do with anything

ArabellaScott · 28/02/2024 22:52

Routes Out is run by GCC and doesn't take donations.

I found this organisation.

say women do amazing work with young women - lots of different elements to their support.

littlbrowndog · 28/02/2024 23:19

Sex worker is how many newspapers have called her.

she was Emma who was murdered by a pervert.

and then many women assaulted by this man

thanks Strathclyde police and police Scotland.

you give no fucks about women. You are and were corrupt still

1000 statements not followed up.

Emma and the 27 women involved in this trial are the tip of an iceberg.
i do hope that this is pushed and pushed so those who made decisions to not proceed, for whatever reasons, are held accountable.

Cold case cops to probe unsolved sex attacks on back of Emma Caldwell inquiry

Potential evidence of rapes and other sex crimes will be investigated as well as a range of other possible cases.

I'm glad that there's finally been justice for Emma.

littlbrowndog · 28/02/2024 23:49

Joan did. Took so long to get justice for Emma and the other women.

Lalgarh · 28/02/2024 23:49

Watching the disclosure programme on it being shown on bbc2.

Packer was named by senior detectives but they all got moved off the case when he was named. High level cover up?

littlbrowndog · 28/02/2024 23:54

I think so

and despite Sandy Brindley from women’s aid calling for sex workers to come forward. You might note that Emma’s mum never called her a sex worker
the women that were raped and assaulted were just that. Women

littlbrowndog · 28/02/2024 23:56

It’s not work. It’s just the horrible thing you have to do

it’s not work

ithinkitsdone · 28/02/2024 23:57

I plan on pushing my MSPs on this.
On the failures of the past but also on how are they going to.prioritise women involved.

jcakey · 29/02/2024 03:47

This must have been so traumatic for all those women who weren't listened to and Emma's family. My heart goes out to them and it makes me angry that justice has taken so long. And I find it deeply ironic that The Guardian has published these words about the case:

...what became all too apparent were the devastating consequences when the authorities do not take seriously women and girls who report sexual crimes...

I know. If she was a shop assistant or a librarian, it wouldn't feature would it?

Prurient news agenda. Listening to the BBC Jack the ripper podcast which is about the women, rather than him - its the same old, same old. Vulnerable women - and its their work that hits the headlines.

I thoroughly recommend the book- The Five: The Untold Lives of the Women Killed by Jack the Ripper by Hallie Rubenhold. It's not about the man or his crimes. It's the women's stories.

She only did that to support her heroin addiction, it shouldn't define her. She was a human being, FGS.

Although I hate to go all conspiracy theorist, I can't help but think it must be something like that. Just awful.

SinnerBoy · 03/03/2024 15:52

I see that Emma's has asked for a criminal investigation into the mishandling of her case. I seriously hope that an inquiry is instituted and the men responsible face censure. I saw the story in the Observer - I have cut and pasted the salient parts, for those of you who can't read the Guardian:

https://www.theguardian.com/uk-news/2024/mar/03/mother-of-emma-caldwell-calls-for-criminal-investigation-into-mishandling-of-case

The family of Caldwell, who was 27 when she was found dead in woodland 44 miles from her Glasgow home, have called for a public inquiry into failures by the authorities over the investigation of her murder. Her mother, Margaret Caldwell, is also calling for a criminal investigation led by an outside police force and steered by independent prosecutors to scrutinise the conduct of authorities involved in the case.

She told the Sunday Post: “The only thing the crown office should have been announcing after the trial was an immediate and independent criminal investigation. It is not just my family that needs reassurance about our justice system. Everyone in Scotland needs that reassurance.”

Yes. I wonder if it's worth writing to MSPs to push for this.

The BBC podcast is an excellent piece of journalism- and the Police should be ashamed. I don’t think anyone will be brought to justice - the culture of misogyny is rife and unfortunately the Police have it set up that officers can ‘retire’, collect their pensions and be off the hook.

Full admiration for the women that came forward and spoke to Sam Poling - I hope those that are still alive are safe and well. We absolutely need to call out the reporting of such cases.

Unfortunately we all know what an enquiry will lead to - lawyers getting richer and the ultimate comment of ‘lessons will be learnt’ which of course won’t be the case at all.

However - I do think we push this with MSPs if nothing else they may think again about some of their decisions that can lead to vulnerable women being further neglected

SinnerBoy · 05/03/2024 15:00

And they may try to have the list, which is said to include police officers, council officials, lawyers and two celebrities, unveiled at a civil court case next month.

Police in brothels? Surely not, said nobody, ever. It would certainly go towards explaining why Packer was discounted as a suspect, because they wouldn't want to risk their names coming up.

Bastards.
