Haven't had chance to look at this yet. Was completely unaware of it so thought I'd flag it up as deadline is close.

Murdered at Home: Tonight ITV1, 8.30pm In the UK between two and three women are murdered by a partner or former partner every week, while annually about 1.4 million women are victims of domestic abuse. The government is considering new legislation to tackle violence against women, with campaigners saying sentences are too lenient for men who murder women at home. At present, if a killer uses a weapon found in the home the tariff is 15 years, while a woman murdered in a park by a weapon brought from elsewhere would get 25 years. With a public consultation on domestic homicide sentencing ending on March 4, the reporter Julie Etchingham asks whose side is the law on.

Thanks. That is a big discrepancy. Especially if you consider that women murdered in their home will likely have already suffered various forms of abuse from their partner.

The law, and the way these cases are reported, still seems influenced by the notion that a degree of abuse is understandable within heterosexual relationships.

And although of course the majority of people will be more scared by the thought of a man murdering strangers, the chances are he's already been abusive in some way towards a woman he lives with. And is the stranger murderer simply being penalised extra for murdering a woman he didn't "own"? ( To be clear, I think both should be locked up forever).

Watching it now.

Just watched it. Shocking to thing these monsters could be walking the streets or online dating, looking for another potential victim. You just don’t know who you’re rubbing shoulders with.

I tried looking for Pr*ck advisor on Facebook but it seems to have been scrubbed.

That's the only form of intel on these perpetrators I can think of

The legal minds on here will be able to correct me if I'm wrong (I often am!) but I wonder if this would be yet another area where a concrete definition of men and women would be helpful. I'm sure I have read that previous legislation designed to penalise perpetrators of domestic violence (so men) has inadvertently ended up meaning longer sentences for some female victims who fought back against their abusers. Just to be clear, I completely support long sentences for people who abuse and kill their partners - it disgusts me how quickly they are released and it obviously retraumatises any children or family members such as the victim's parents - who are often in the position of having to fight to keep their loved one's murderer locked up.

Extraordinary! Although I don't know why I'm shocked. When I searched for ""Murdered at Home" ITV1" the only publication with a whole article about the programme and the consultation, apart from ITV and TV Guides, was Glamour Magazine!

ITV - good article:

I don't know if they have caught the whole programme but someone has put it up on YT in two parts. They will probably get taken down for copyright infringement so catch quickly if you haven't got a TV Licence:

Murdered at Home (1/2)

Murdered at Home (2/2)

Murdered at Home: Why do men who kill their partners get shorter sentences than other killers?

The mothers of three young women who were murdered in their homes by current or former partners are urgently calling for change.

I was going to come here and put this on. I think this also needs to be put in AIBU which has more traffic since the Feminism: Sex & gender discussions section is seen as a place for trans-issues and women's equality and others supporting this issue may not see this important consultations
