Dr Phil sees the light!

Dr Phil on Joe Rogan, discussing the issue with trans identifying children. He says he’s got a few shows coming out soon talking about the problems and long term impacts of this trend. I know he’s done fairly pro trans shows before so I’m surprised to see this, but he’s obviously educated himself over the years. I think if he’s highlighting the problems in this ideology it will make a huge impact in the states, he is a huge star there and very mainstream.

Love Dr Feeeeeeeul. Would be surprised if he wasn't sensible about the whole thing.

PriOn1 · 21/02/2024 10:20

I was (pleasantly) surprised to see that he has flipped from supporting the transactivist position to seeing that there are huge problems with aspects of the medical situation. I will be interested to see where he goes next.

I have no idea how much reach he has, but he is certainly a voice from the US I am aware of, so presumably he still has some influence.

smokedpaprike · 21/02/2024 10:30

I think the issue in the past (when tv shows did pro trans stuff ) is that everyone believed that the "science" was well founded and evidenced.

Justme56 · 21/02/2024 10:30

Oprah Winfrey was behind the Dr Phil shows so he was probably limited on what he could or couldn’t say. However the Dr Phil show ended last year and he’s starting his own show elsewhere so I guess has more say in what he can discuss.

Goldshelfie · 21/02/2024 11:23

I read that as well, he’s got more autonomy now so can go against the acceptable view. I hope he still has influence with the American public now he’s gone to do more independent material. He hasn’t been smeared or cancelled has he? I couldn’t see anything online but maybe I missed something.

We lived in the US twenty years ago and LOVED Dr Phil.
I always hoped he'd be sensible about this issue.

ArabellaScott · 21/02/2024 13:19

Ah, I didn't see this thread!

Good news, I think.

alittleprivacy · 21/02/2024 13:36

I'm listening to it now. It's not just about trans stuff. I've just gotten to the part about his worries about child trafficking at the border. That's very upsetting too.

AmaryllisNightAndDay · 21/02/2024 14:31

Very clearly presented. And he's not stopping with just the clip:

"In fairness, the American Medical Association, the American Pediatric Society, the American Endocrine Society... all of the major medical associations have signed off on this [gender-affirming care]. And I have never seen those organisations sign off on anything with less information as to whether it does long term harm."

"We're going to do some shows that are already taped that are revealing what the real results of this are and I think people are going to be shocked that these medical organisations have signed off on this. I think they've just given in to the pressure."

Well, thank you Dr Phil! I hope he has his flame-proof suit brushed and ready.

Thingybob · 21/02/2024 14:38

He has been as guilty as any other main stream US presenter of propagating the ideology over the last decade. He needs to take some responsibility for spreading that misinformation and the harm that it has caused. "Oprah made me do it" will not wash

Ohhhthedrama · 21/02/2024 15:14

'Dr' Phill ( he's not a Dr anymore, just a billionaire talk show host). It's great that he's talking about it, but he's not going to turn into some kind of champion for the cause. He really just goes for topics that will get him talked about. He has a pretty sketchy history.

Interesting ad hominem here with allusions of “sketchiness”. Aside from such gossip itself being ambiguous, what does that have to do with unnecessary and dangerous surgery on minors? Answer: nothing.

And I see you’ve stripped him of his doctorate in clinical psychology as well. One retains degree titles for life. He is a “Dr” whether you approve of him or not.

AmaryllisNightAndDay · 21/02/2024 15:27

If mainstream TV presenters are changing their tune at last then that's a good thing. And he's arguing it on lack of evidence which is politically neutral.

We don't need to see into his soul and judge his motives.

He is a qualified doctor. He is not a practising clinical psychologist anymore.

@Sunnava No need to be so aggressive. My point was just because someone is speaking on something you agree with doesn't necessarily mean they are someone you want to align yourself with. He has been involved in many scandals over the yrs and his shows are now entertainment.

InvisibleBuffy · 21/02/2024 15:46

Oh that's big. Dr Phil is huge in the US. I can't imagine this being discussed by him that openly even a year ago. Things are shifting fast

Agreeing with someone on one topic does not mean you sign a pact for life to be their BFF or agree with anything else they say or do.

This is a non-issue.

Agreed I was a bit assertive (not aggressive). I was a little dumbfounded that you had at the same time demoted his credentials, however, in fairness!

Ohhhthedrama · 21/02/2024 15:58

I must admit I enjoy the odd Dr Phill show. A few of my recent favorites
I'm pregnant with Justin Biebers baby & I had a secret relationship with Michael Jackson & the Annie song is about me. If your lucky, Robin, his wife, will try to sell you some skin care! Maybe in the US we look at him more as entertainment than a serious topic show. Anyway y'all have a nice day!. And don't forget you can't change what you don't acknowledge- follow me for more Dr phillisms

Whom among us has done nothing wrong, ever?

Dr Phil had the Schofield family on once upon a time, he too was swayed that January Schofield was brilliant. Then many years later he had the parents on his show and showed up the bullshit. So yes he has made mistakes. He also has admitted that and in the Schofield's case made it right. It took too long I agree, but he did it.
I wouldnt call him sketchy, necessarily. Naive sure.

It's not aligning ourselves because at one moment in time we agree on something. We simply agree on an issue. That's all. I'm not suddenly going to be his bestie for life.

ArabellaScott · 21/02/2024 16:08

Ooh, vague ad homs and guilt by association. Very effective. Love it. Do come again.

Coyoacan · 21/02/2024 16:25

Surely the point is that someone with a huge audience is going to step out of line and tell it like it is, not whether he is good, bad or indifferent

Ohhhthedrama · 21/02/2024 16:29

@ArabellaScott I appear to have pissed you off. I'm sorry. I see I have wondered into an 'invited posters only area. I shall back out slowly.

ArabellaScott · 21/02/2024 16:31

I'm not pissed off. I'm mildly amused.

OldCrone · 21/02/2024 16:33

My point was just because someone is speaking on something you agree with doesn't necessarily mean they are someone you want to align yourself with.

That's right. Agreeing with someone on one issue is different from 'aligning yourself with' that person.

Some of us agree with what he has said here. That doesn't mean we're 'aligning ourselves with' him. (I'm not even sure what 'aligning yourself with' someone means, though.)
