JK Rowling blasts Glasgow library for 'shaming lesbians' with 'penis-centred' comic

"Glasgow Women's Library has chosen to display a delightful penis-centred work...designed to shame and coerce lesbians out of same-sex orientation. If anyone can think of a more appropriate name for the Glasgow Women's Library, do let me know."

Rowling, who has faced death threats for her beliefs, was responding to a 'thread' by Scottish Lesbians, which said the comic was "openly anti-lesbian material". They say it "portrays lesbianism as a fear of penises, rather than a sexual orientation" and accuses it of "insinuating penises into lesbianism".

The library was heavily criticised on social media, including by Alba MP Neale Hanvey who said the comic promoted "the homophobia and specifically lesbophobia at the heart of gender ideology".
However, defending the library was Duncan Hothersall, editor of Labour Hame, who said: "Solidarity with @womenslibrary, a brilliant organisation run by amazing women, which is currently facing an onslaught of smears and attacks from a mob of transphobes.

"Glasgow Women's Library has done more for women's rights in Scotland than any of its detractors will ever do." Glasgow Women's Library has been approached for comment.

JK Rowling blasts Glasgow library for 'shaming lesbians'

The Harry Potter author hit out after details emerged of a comic being displayed at Glasgow Women's Library that critics say it suggests lesbians who do not want to have sex with biological men who identify as females are transphobic

"Glasgow Women's Library has done more for women's rights in Scotland than any of its detractors will ever do."

Given just how much JKR has done for women's rights, one has to wonder if Duncan is referring exclusively to the erm, other kind of woman.

aweegc · 03/02/2024 04:21

lol! Thanks, Man, for explaining to us who it is who/what has done more for our rights. Good to know, isn't it, because with our silly Lauder brains, if he hadn't told us, we wouldn't have known.

Man does mansplaining. Bravo, big boy..

Wee Duncan doing what he does best, hating on the wummin. Never changes. What a farce GWL are. BawBags RUs Library! And JKR is just such a fab queen - I luv that wummin. She is so fearless and kind and uses her wealth to help women and children who are disadvantaged . A true warrior!!

Yalta · 03/02/2024 04:31

I wonder what Emma Watson has to say on this matter?

dapsnotplimsolls · 03/02/2024 05:46

I'm sure men will be delighted to read this bit

It includes pages suggesting penises "are just another body part with cultural meanings that have changed".

Crankywiddershins · 03/02/2024 07:07

They should just rebrand as the Glasgow Transwomen's Library and make it clear exactly which kind of woman they're all about.
And we really should instigate a national JKR appreciation day. Let her and all the Rowlingphobes know we've got her back.

Me too. Her opinion is always so well-considered and unbiased.

MrsJellybee · 03/02/2024 08:38

All women have the right to not want a penis in our lives. Be it lesbian, heterosexual or otherwise. We don’t owe penises our attention. And boy, we actually do have every right to be afraid of them.

Igmum · 03/02/2024 08:55

Back to good old corrective rape, my mind boggles at how anyone can think this is acceptable for even a second.

SquirrelSoShiny · 03/02/2024 08:57

She is the true Queen 👸

Poudretteite · 03/02/2024 09:52

This is completely disgusting and rapey.
Mocking a woman for being afraid of or not wanting a penis?
Because rape is just exposure to a body part whose cultural meanings have changed!
So shut up and take it, you hysterical Karen!

Suggestion for name change - The Glasgow Women’s Penis Library.

lechiffre55 · 03/02/2024 15:37

Scotland seems to be in the news for this stuff all the time. e.g. ERCC, rapist is a gender etc....
What it is with Scotland hating women so much?

IwantToRetire · 03/02/2024 23:53

What it is with Scotland hating women so much?

Certainly seems so, but on the plus size seem to be enough strong women, not just JKR, calling them out.

Have this lingering feeling this is happening just as much south of the border and elsewhere. But maybe it is not being challenged.

Surely the person who's done most for women's rights in Scotland is Isla Bryson?

catduckgoose · 05/02/2024 12:00

Of course it's just insults and deflection. Otherwise he'd have to actually argue a defence of what this book depicts.

Even if this were true, so what? If they had done so much more for women's rights than everyone else, it still wouldn't make it acceptable for them to do this now. It's not like X amounts of previous good work done should cover you from criticism for Y amounts of bad.

At one time Stonewall did an enormous amount of good for gay rights and acceptance. But not so much recently.
As you say :

OneMorePlant · 05/02/2024 15:46

I'm so tired of this ridiculousness. Women should not have to point out lesbians don't do dick.

That reminded me of something Lundy Bancroft wrote about using "well I have been good for ages" as an excuse for behaviour which contributes to the abuse.
