Edinburgh Arts Group to launch play about JKR called TERF C**T – where Daniel, Rupert and Emma stage an 'intervention'

The play, which will be performed on stage in New York next month and is being touted for the Fringe this summer, sees the author's 'surrogate children – Daniel, Rupert and Emma' stage an 'intervention'

Civil Disobedience, which has its roots in the Edinburgh Fringe and was launched by Barry and Josef Church-Woods in May 2016, described it as a "vital think-piece on Joanne, exploring just what could motivate a person with such privilege to take such a divisive stance on issues that affect her fans".

It has been written by Joshua Kaplan, a "queer screenwriter and playwright", and will be performed at The Actors Studio in New York City on Thursday, February 8.

A press release advertising the show claims: "Please note: TERF C**T is not a kill piece. It provides space for reflection and ultimately offers the audience time to explore some of the more contentious aspects of JK's life."

The synopsis for the show continues: "Joanne led a blessed life – for a woman. Billionaire. Literary phenomenon. Natural ginger. And most importantly, beloved. Completely beloved. Until she blew it all to hell.

"From book deals to divorces, family dysfunction to broken friendships, TERF C**T goes beyond the headlines to explore the woman that captivated a world with her books only to unravel a legacy with her tweets."

D'you think they'd mind if we nicked that design from the poster, I really fancy a t-shirt with that women's symbol with devil's horns beside the word TERF. I'd wear it with prideSmile

I think mediocre trans comedian Jen Ives did claim that GC women booked out the front row of Jen's show to intimidate and fail to laugh.

Jen identifies as funny so is therefore funnier than cis comedians

Ereshkigalangcleg · 10/07/2024 13:17

What better way to get publicity for your tawdry production then say you feel threatened?

Indeed.

Seriestwo · 12/07/2024 08:31

They have 3 weeks to opening and haven’t started rehearsals? That’s unusual, isn’t it?

AmaryllisNightAndDay · 12/07/2024 08:36

I'm sure this will be an experimental work. Perhaps the first play to be entirely scripted by the subject's lawyers.

BernardBlacksMolluscs · 12/07/2024 08:57

from the hollywood reporter article:

TERF was penned by American playwright and screenwriter Joshua Kaplan, [..], and the play’s creative team insists the production is not a hit piece and has asked Rowling to attend the show

I'll bet they fucking have. can you imagine the publicity?

There are then “interspersed flashback scenes,” Kaplan explains, that serve to explain how Rowling developed her rigid views about gender.

oh my god why do people struggle so much with simple concepts when sex becomes involved (especially if they're too prudish to say sex). She does not have rigid views about gender you absolute fucking morons. gah!

It must take a special kind of zen to be able to deal with stupid people making stupid statements about what you believe and not just sic your lawyers on them. I'd like to buy that woman a drink

Wouldn't surprise me if there is no show. They will sell (a few) tickets. Then cancel at the last minute citing violence. Then never do refunds because of their 'incurred costs'.

Yep this

licence to grift innit? Piggy back off the name of one of the best known women in the world. Ratchet up the publicity with comments about hate and faux naïveté about how your plan isn’t too make jkr look dreadful & hope that she comes along

whilst failing to do the basics like finish script and rehearse

then when whole thing falls to bits because of own incompetence say had to cancel because hate from TERFS

job done

The producer did say the part that had been written had been "legalled".

They're probably having to run every line past lawyers and having trouble saying what they want to in a way the lawyers will sign off on. Especially as they will be well aware of why the first venue pulled out - fear of reputational damage and legal action, not threats.

But as above, they'll cite "threats" and "fear" if they cancel, just as they did with the change of venue.

Chersfrozenface · 19/07/2024 14:02

I doubt whether anyone will bother to protest.

And I certainly wouldn't pay Festival prices to see a piece which is probably badly written and undoubtedly filleted by lawyers.

Datun · 19/07/2024 14:38

It wouldn't surprise me if they planted some protesters deliberately.

Ereshkigalangcleg · 19/07/2024 14:42

Me neither @Datun

lcakethereforeIam · 19/07/2024 14:48

Actually, writing an audience plant into the script could be quite interesting, add a few minutes to the run time too.

In reality I expect a few women sat quietly in AHF t-shirts will bring the whole production to its knees and involve calling all the emergency services...possibly including the coast guard.

Fringe plays are mostly very short, it's how the Fringe works.

I was also going to say that an "I ❤JKR" T shirt might have to count as "protest" - you got there first!

And bless him he's "open to" screen adaptations. Have we ever met anyone who wasn't?

lcakethereforeIam · 19/07/2024 15:07

'I ❤️ JKR' would be a much better choice 😃

The coastguard? More likely to need mountain rescue to escort audience members down from the dizzying heights of Kaplan's ego.

The theatre of TRA performance of their idea of women wanting rights... now that I'd go to watch! 😂 Fangs, tweed skirts and hurled lemon drizzle cake. It won't be convincing.

Most festival shows involve the cast out on the street for days trying to push leaflets and get bums on seats, competing against hundreds of other shows. It's not uncommon for there to be only a couple in the audience.

That's why you learn early, if you grow up in Edinburgh, to keep your hands in your pockets when walking up the Royal Mile during August because otherwise you're handed dozens of leaflets from innumerable very persistent show members.

You know that adage 'there's no such thing as bad publicity'?

https://www.hollywoodreporter.com/lifestyle/arts/jk-rowling-play-terf-edinburgh-fringe-harry-potter-trans-1235943996/

It's not been completely written, there have been no rehearsals, and yet there's talk of a film adaptation! No pressure on the writer then 🍿

That article was genuinely nauseating.
And do they expect to find a big enough audience to justify the expense of a film, and distribution?
Or is it to be a youtube production ?😂

Starring Owl or India as JKR?

Tinysoxxx · 21/07/2024 18:20

Would the words coming out of fakeJKR’s or fakeRadcliffe’s mouth be classed as a hate crime if the words upset an audience member? I remember somewhere about the hate crime stuff v theatre and it was mentioned directors and actors may have problems. That could prove interesting.
