Labour lose council by-election after tearing itself apart over trans row: Candidate suffers shock loss to Tories in east London after she was 'forced' to apologise for social media posts in which she claimed 'trans women are not female'

Maybe the Labour Party will start to listen .... won't hold my breath!

Reassured to see this analysis but yes, for anyone in Labour who is already trashing women (not a short list of people), this will be grist to their mill.

I think people tend to be reluctant to vote for a candidate when their relationship to the party seems to be fraught. There are exceptions but overall it makes people wary about how effective the candidate will be.

If people want to vote against Labour because they were againt the GC views of the candidate they would have voted Green or LibDem surely? The vote might alos be a protest agains the incumbant Labour mayor and his ULEZ squeeze on motorists too.

I think there will be Labour voters in that area as there are in all areas that would have either stayed home or voted otherwise because they are GC.

It was a big swing but I suspect mixed reasons. I think the area has quite a large Jewish community and maybe they feel safer with the Tories at the moment.

If someone is politically aware enough to avoid voting labour due to their women issues/reality issues, then they would know that the libdems/greens are sadly even worse options.

I mean, Hackney are one of the few councils still openly supporting Mermaids...so the residents do need to step up. Hackney council is fully captured by Stonewall. However the people of Hackney aren't. I don't mean your transcient middle class luvvies who move into the area but absolutely can't wait to leave when they have kids, i mean the community who have been born and raised there.

Edited

I live in Hackney Cazenove ward, and you'd probably class me as a 'middle-class luvvy' (as I wasn't born and raised here), but I've been here over 20 years and I don't intend to leave and am certainly not captured by Stonewall or their ilk.

I think anyolddinosaur has the best take on the reasons for this loss.
