Labour lose council by-election after tearing itself apart over trans row: Candidate suffers shock loss to Tories in east London after she was 'forced' to apologise for social media posts in which she claimed 'trans women are not female'

Maybe the Labour Party will start to listen .... won't hold my breath!

I guarantee that will Labour will take from that is not that they enabled an embarrassing unprofessional shitshuw but that the public don’t like GC candidates

There isn't any way of telling though, is there? Not at the moment anyway, we'd need to wait for someone to dig into it.

As much as we'd like it to be because of the Labour mess, it could also be due to her GC views. It could also be due to other factors entirely.

It's almost certainly a mix of all three. There will be people put off voting for her by all the above.

Theinnocenteyeballsinthesky · 20/01/2024 08:52

Agree flickersy- I’m just stating my view of what I think Labour will take from it

terffert · 20/01/2024 09:05

I wonder why on earth, as a matter of political judgement, she apologised? Surely it was clear that by making sensible gc points and then going back on them she was going to end up having pleased nobody?

Froodwithatowel · 20/01/2024 09:16

They won't 'listen'. They may temporarily adjust their marketing until safely in power.

EasternStandard · 20/01/2024 09:20

They’re probably going on about other stuff

Whatever happens women who care on this are pretty much bottom of the pile fur Labour so don’t expect much

anyolddinosaur · 20/01/2024 09:34

Labour refused to campaign for their own candidate. There is a large Jewish population there, the tory is a Jewish convert and an ex Lib Dem - he picked up a lot of their votes.. Local Muslims are said to be unhappy with Labour's stance on Gaza and a lot of people dislike Labour's Low Traffic Neighbourhood schemes.

Labour lost votes in the election for mayor after the previous mayor resigned for being seen with Dewey, a former Labour councillor who pleaded guilty to possessing indecent images of children. So it wouldnt have been an easy campaign.

A lot in play there but refusing to campaign for your own candidate obviously does not help.

There's a much longer thread about this whole debacle.

I completely agree. They will feel vindicated.

They are in for a MASSIVE shock at the GE.

DewHopper · 20/01/2024 09:50

Also - why is this not bigger news?

rabbitwoman · 20/01/2024 10:18

Labour still beat the green Party candidate, who I assume would have been very trans inclusive - so none of those protest votes against a GC candidate converted into votes for a candidate from a party with a very trans inclusive stance, did they?

DewHopper · 20/01/2024 10:30

Good point rabbitwoman and very heartening tbf. Perhaps people really are seeing sense on this issue.

Does the winning candidate believe that TWAW then?

LondonLass91 · 20/01/2024 10:36

Hackney has loads of women's groups, and they are vocal about being spaces for women only. It's a shame she apologised, and undoubtedly this is the reason people voted against her.

LondonLass91 · 20/01/2024 10:44

I mean, Hackney are one of the few councils still openly supporting Mermaids...so the residents do need to step up. Hackney council is fully captured by Stonewall. However the people of Hackney aren't. I don't mean your transcient middle class luvvies who move into the area but absolutely can't wait to leave when they have kids, i mean the community who have been born and raised there.

Bululu · 20/01/2024 10:46

A friend lives in Hackney. She is fed up with useless Sadiq Khan. That may have influenced other people to vote against Labour.

LondonLass91 · 20/01/2024 10:47

It's an example of the council not representing the community. Be interesting to see how much has been spent on diversity training, in such a poor borough.

Isn't Dianne 'Hackney' Abbott still sitting MP there? I wonder who Labour will put up against her and whether she will still beat their candidate.

Well, if they do feel vindicated, and it gives them confidence, then perhaps we will really see exactly what they think.

If it gives them the go-ahead to merrily bang on about women having penises, then lets have it.

HPFA · 20/01/2024 11:54

Looking at the history of the ward Ian Sharer seems to have kept almost all the LibDem vote and added the normal Conservative to it - the LibDem vote for the official candidate collapsed completely.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cazenove_(ward)

Judging by the reaction on Twitter and elsewhere it appears everyone thinks it proves whatever they believed beforehand! In reality without asking a proportion of the voters why they voted as they did it's impossible to know which factors predominated.

Floisme · 20/01/2024 12:11

I don't think it's impossible, but I think it needs someone who knows the ward well to make sense of the result. I'm certainly not qualified to do that and I also rule out Wikipedia as a source.

However as an ex member, I don't doubt that the Labour party has a problem - and has had one for a long time - with some of its own members who would rather lose an election than support the 'wrong kind' of candidate, even when that candidate has been through the party's own selection process.

Flickersy · 20/01/2024 12:13

Confirmation bias and human nature!

Overall the polling does suggest we're heading for a fair Labour majority whenever the general election rolls around. Barring any major cock ups, I think the probability is that isn't going to change.

Ereshkigalangcleg · 20/01/2024 12:18

What interests me, is I wonder if Hackney Labour had had more time they would have run another candidate when Laura was suspended?

IwantToRetire · 20/01/2024 18:53

There's an existing thread about this which has info about the local area, and much as some might want this to be about trans, it is more than likely to be about local issues.

If interested to read the comments, dating back to when she was first suspended see https://www.mumsnet.com/talk/womens_rights/4984297-labour-candidate-suspended-for-transphobia
