JK Rowling called ‘Britain’s nastiest novelist’ in New Statesman

IwantToRetire · 16/01/2024 01:26

After setting out the examples of nastiness in recent works including The Ink Black Heart and The Running Grave, he stated that Rowling has evolved “from saint-like Labour Party-supporting children’s author to polemical political activist, seemingly obsessive about the tabloid media, Scottish nationalism and, most provocatively for her millennial readers, gender-critical feminism”.

He claimed that she lacks “self-awareness” because she “condemns vicious keyboard warriors and hysterical reactionaries in her books but engages in similar behaviour herself online”.

“In another world, JK Rowling could be a character in a book by Robert Galbraith: brittle, insecure, cruel.”

Following the backlash, the New Statesman appeared to alter the original headline to “JK Rowling, Britain’s Gloriously Nasty Novelist”.

I dont think it is a surprise that some male writer would say this. The question is why would the New Statesman want to publish it?

Proclaimed by Nick Hilton, podcaster, who no one has ever heard of.

There's nothing a male nonentity hates more than a successful, renowned woman. He's probably just shouting rude words so mummy will pay attention to him. Thing is, however exciting this little media spat is for him now, she will be remembered forever, as a phenomenal author, a brilliant humanitarian and a brave defender of women's rights in the face of indefensible threat, defamation, slander, libel and cruelty. He, on the other hand, will be forgotten in 10 minutes and he knows it, which is why his little foot is stamping too hard.

She is downright childish on twitter and regularly bullies and dogpiles much smaller accounts. She also brags about how much money she has which is a bad look on anyone.

oh that seems nasty, do you have any links?

You CANNOT leave us hanging, what happens next?!! Will Nick overstep in his unhappiness that a woman has opinions of her own, get fired and replaced by the better qualified yet inexplicably less well paid female journalist who is willing to evidence her claims in articles? And will Miss Marple successfully hide the weedkiller?

The knitting needles! She forgot the knitting needles! <tenterhooks>

She's wry and funny about the outrageous nonsense directed towards her.

I remember her retweeting some idiot threatening to "burn my copies of Harry Potter" with a comment like "Please do, every copy burned make £10 disappear from my bank account."

She laughs at some of the nonsense and is quick to defend herself against public slander/libel. That's not bullying.

pronounsbundlebundle · 16/01/2024 14:24

I also am hoping that Jane Marple decides that Nick does not deserve her beautifully made socks and can source his own bloody socks from now on. She decides to sell them at the village fete instead and donate the proceeds to crowdfunders for women who've been bullied out of their jobs for daring to state that scientific reality sometimes matters more than a man's personal inner self image.

Only if your definition of "abuse" and "slander" is so broad it includes "anyone who doesn't wholeheartedly agree with me".

Threats of assault, rape and murder aren't "not agreeing wholeheartedly" with another person.

Have you got any tweets to show the sort of thing you meant?

Pull up a comfy chair, get in supplies of drinks and snacks I fear you will be waiting a very long time for the answer to this question you have now asked three times. You would think those throwing out such accusations would have the evidence at their fingertips, but alas not.

How about you buck the trend @PrawnLiberationFront and actually provide some evidence of your claims? It would be such a refreshing change.

MandyMotherOfBrian · 16/01/2024 14:28

Come on Prawn, linky link please….

yourhairiswinterfire · 16/01/2024 14:36

I'm just scrolling her Twitter feed now, I'm up to last year.

Some examples so far of her 'dogpiling', or in normal speak, responding to people @ ing her:

-A screenshot of some dafty calling her an ugly nazi.

-She quote tweeted screenshots of a lovely fella who tweeted about her 'JKR better have a food taster the rest of her life. Fucking cunt thinks she can just keep escalating these hateful fucking attacks, just wait and see what happens. Bitch better hope her house is safe. A lot of things can happen that look like accidents'. And from the same fella 'when is this fucking cunt going to die already? Somebody needs to poison this cunt already'. All that was because JKR said it's abuse to force women to call their rapists 'she' and pretend he's a woman in court. (And that charmer's profile pic is that of a 50yo+ looking man Prawn, definitely not a teenager.)

-Responded to someone who was laughing at a 60 year old woman being punched in the head by a man.

-She called a prick a prick (Tom whathisface who likes protesting and intimidating women attending women's conferences to discuss MVAWG. He's also not a teenager).

-Quote tweeted a man (again, looks like he's in his 60s, not a teenager) who said rape isn't a big deal and 'making rape THE big scary thing is a feminist tool for levering more government support for victimhood'.

Stuff like that you mean, Prawn? What should she do, just tut quietly as unhinged men threaten to kill her, as they bully rape victims and defend rapists, as they dismiss violence against women and actually incite it? She's not seeking most of these people out, they're tweeting at her and she's tweeting back, which is how Twitter works.

Methinks it's not the 'dogpiling' that's the issue, it's her pointing out the violence and misogyny of the 'right side of history' fellas that irks, isn't it? Because, 'the worst thing about male violence is that it makes men look bad'.

ADoggyDogWorld · 16/01/2024 14:55

Being childish is wrong now is it, cos I had my 'you are a poo poo head' insult at the ready?

BlessedKali · 16/01/2024 15:06

He must be incredibly under-endowed.

yourhairiswinterfire · 16/01/2024 15:14

Just got to the tweet where she turned down a young man, Josh, demanding 'suck my dick, bitch'.

'Going to have to pass Josh. Last time I sucked something that tiny it got stuck between my front teeth. #irritating', she replied.

Is that the bullying, PrawnLiberationFront? Refusing to suck a strangers penis? Josh definitely wanted to be noticed by her btw, he sent his sexual demand in the form of an eye-catching sparkly, rainbow GIF.

Seen no money brags or arguments with teenagers so far...

CeciledeVolangesdeNouveau · 16/01/2024 15:18

Isn’t it weird how JKR gets so much hate for (from what I understand) a male murderer using a female disguise in a lighthearted novel and Thomas Harris hasn’t caught any criticism (does anyone know the correct spelling of flak/flack? I was going to write it but wasn’t sure) over Buffalo Bill?! Who was actually modelled on a number of real people?

JustSpeculation · 16/01/2024 15:32

Brefugee · 16/01/2024 14:38

links?

Well, there was that great response to the guy who asked her how she could so evil and so unfunny at the same time. That was magnificently, wonderfully childish. And there was the time she put down the person asking how she dealt with her increasing irrelevance and pending legacylessness and she did mention her royalty cheques. That's a matter of record. No bullying as far as I know, and I'm not sure what dogpiling is, but perhaps it has something to do with pets and carpets. She does I believe have dogs?

it is demonstrative of a woman who knows how to have fun. And how to stay on the right side of winding up idiots.

She's certainly guilty of winning battles of wit with unarmed opponents.

👏

Prawn would do well to remember that many of us have been on the internet for a long time and we have learned, often the hard way, that anybody can say anything about anything, but sadly it's not always true or correct. If you want to be taken seriously when you make serious accusations, you need to provide evidence, not just make wild allegations. This especially applies when you're making these allegations to people who are very well placed to check what you are saying, e.g. the millions of people who follow J. K. Rowling on X/Twitter, as I do. I checked her account last night. She is writing at the moment and she never tweets very much when she's writing.

I wonder if Prawn has problems recognising humour.

It’s an example of her responding with wry (and very British) humour and showing her haters that they aren’t getting her down. She probably hasn’t even bought a load of champagne, or if she has it’s a pittance compared to what she gives to charity and she’s allowed to anyway. It’s not like she joked that people had started cancelling even more of her work so she was going to squash a puppy.

I can't get angry with the NS for this; should it only be pieces I agree with get printed? The review stands or falls on its own merits. I'm sure it'll be all over the letters page next week.

But I would expect quality

Coyoacan · 16/01/2024 16:31

Surely nearly every other account on Twitter is smaller than JKR's

Being pointed out on X that this is the same Nick Hilton who gave Mr Bates vs the Post Office 3 stars and said it was hard to imagine anyone sticking with it.

LOL. Oh he really does have his finger on the pulse, doesn't he? Bloody hell. How could anyone with an ounce of common sense miss the power of that story?
