Labour candidate suspended for 'transphobia'

Labour’s London region has suspended the party’s candidate for a closely-contested council by-election in Hackney following allegations of “transphobia“.
Party members were told by email early this morning by Hackney’s borough organiser that “all planned campaign sessions” in the Cazenove ward had been cancelled, including those that were to have taken place today.
A Labour source has confirmed that the candidate, Laura Pascal (front right in photo), has been “administratively suspended”, which means a complaint has been made about her by another party member and a decision taken to investigate it.
The timing of the suspension means there is not enough time to nominate a different candidate in time for the by-election, which will be held next Thursday. This means that if Pascal wins, she will sit as an independent councillor. The source confirmed that Labour will do no further campaigning for her.

And I’m so tired of being told what I can and cannot think.

Nobody is telling you what to think. This is a discussion forum and the point of being on it is to not only be able to put forward your point of view, but also listen to and try and understand others.

Which also means, as others have said, I might not like someone liking what I think is a poor analogy, but I certainly dont think she should be cancelled. It is her point of view.

This is a new article about the Cazenove election, which not only talks about the complaint but gives some background to the ward as a whole, and other candidates (will the bins swing it!)

But also says that it has been confirmed the formal complaint was from a Labour Party member not some other party trying to undermine the Labour vote.

Hackney: The many dimensions of the Cazenove by-election

Identity politics, foreign policy, local knowledge and more mundane matters could all influence the outcome in the east London borough

I assumed that would be the case, it's not like there aren't plenty of Labour supporters who have it in for women like Tonia and Rosie. Also lots of the Green men piling on her seem very invested in what Labour does, maybe ex members who defected in disgust at its "transphobia" as several have mentioned on the Labour Reddit page, so would likely still have friends in the party.

Interesting new article. I shan't be voting based on the issue of bins, though Grin

But why wait until now. Her views were known as the time she was selected.

If you are a Labour Party supporter why put a spanner if the campaign at the last moment.

I had sort of assumed it was the Greens or someone hoping to stop a Labour victory.

Ereshkigalangcleg · 17/01/2024 16:46

Because they were thwarted in getting Rosie kicked out on similar grounds. The raging over that was something to see.

I think the Bins will feel very cancelled.

I cant find it now, but someone on facebook posted a photo of their bins at the New Year each with its own colour.

And on one they had added a notice that said "I am a non Binary bin and even though I am green today I am brown so please take my rubbish"

And obviously the refuse collecting team had had their inclusivity training and recognised it as being green for the day!

So why didn't they do it at the time. Her position and Rosie's has been known for ages.

Looks like the Mail has caught up with this story. If interested see photo https://i.dailymail.co.uk/1s/2024/01/16/10/80076785-12968431-image-a-1_1705402076277.jpg

Ereshkigalangcleg · 17/01/2024 16:58

Also, there are a lot of young people in the Labour Party who would rather the party lose than "pander to transphobia". Some have left and joined the Greens, but not all.

Floisme · 17/01/2024 16:58

Back in the day I knew quite a few Labour party members who didn't enjoy it at all when they were in government, and who were more interested in battling internal enemies than they were in winning elections. It sounds like they're still around.

Clambering · 17/01/2024 19:20

Update - just got an email from the local borough organisers saying:

Cazenove by-election campaign resumed
The campaign to elect Laura Pascal as Labour councillor for Cazenove has, as of this evening resumed. This doesn't leave us with much time but we will be using the time we have left to maximise turnout among Labour supporters."
The vote is tomorrow so not much time left but that's a quick decision from the Labour party & I welcome it.

MrsOvertonsWindow · 17/01/2024 20:12

Is anyone surprised? The process is the punishment for women every time.

Of course, this has generated a fair bit of publicity and, yet again feeds the narrative that Starmer is anti - women and anti child safeguarding. I'm beginning to think that this may become an election issue. Of course, the cost of living, Tory incompetence & sleaze etc will rightly be the major issues. But Starmer's silence in the face of increasingly unhinged labour transactivism speaks to his lack of moral fibre in the face of the social grooming of generations of children. The press aren't going to stop reporting everything that's happening and unless Labour start to respect the law etc, he'll struggle to answer coherently.

Froodwithatowel · 17/01/2024 20:26

Not to mention the general public starting to ask the obvious question that if Labour and Starmer are unhinged on all this, why would they be hinged about cost of living etc?

Ereshkigalangcleg · 17/01/2024 20:29

Wow @Clambering

Really welcome.

But I wonder if they rushed it through to save space.

And if it was able to be dealt with so quickly whether who every made the complaint should at least be investigated to time wasting as well as bringing the Labour Party into disrepute!

FriendOfTimo · 17/01/2024 20:48

Great news, Clambouring! And wow, that’s fast for a Labour suspension (considering Diane Abbott is still suspended after that Observer letter published in April 2023).

IwantToRetire · 17/01/2024 20:52

oops - another typo:

Laura Pascal has put out an apology. Meanwhile it seems local Labour in Hackney are mobilising to get her elected. Be interesting to see what the result is.

ArabellaScott · 17/01/2024 22:08

Goodness me, Laura. Nothing to apologise for. I think that's a mistake, tbh. The TRAs see it as blood in the water and anyone who supports women's rights see it as capitulation.

I'd still vote for her, mind you.

I agree, but I think it is tactical move to get past the suspension. Her twitter banner says courage calls to courage. Looks like she has deleted a few more controversial tweets while keeping others saying more or less the same thing in less dramatic terms.

Well that puts a whole different slant on re-starting the campaign.

ie the ultimatum was obviously humiliate yourself by acknowledging you beliefs are wrong and offensive, and we will let you still be part of our woman hating party.

Faced with that I think she should have gone for the Independent option.

That makes it even clearer that Labour have no respect for women or for women's sex based rights.

The apology is cringemaking.

Why do some people feel they have to remain in Labour come what may.
