Dundee Women's Festival is trying to ban the wrong kind of women

Women who know biology are not welcome apparently. Lets hope they have the best lawyers because they are going to need them.

Women Won’t Wheesht

Unfortunately, yet again, women's voices are being unlawfully silenced.

This time by Dundee Women's Festival ( @dundeewomensfest ) who have rejected our event application to be included in the 2024 Festival because our organisation does not "allign with [the] Festival values"

A bit of background.
Dundee Women's Festival is a series of annual events in Dundee & takes place around IWD.

DWF is supported by DundeeCouncil & the UCD_ISSF (awarded to dundeeuni)

The Festival's criteria for inclusion is that events should be:

* Women centric

* Promoting/highlighting issues affecting women

* A woman only activity/delivered by a women-only organisation

* Promoting women achievers

Rather ironically the theme of this year's festival is

BLAW YER AIN TRUMPET because WEEMIN MAK IT HAPPEN

However, it seems Dundee Women's Festival do not want us to mak it happen, nor do they want us to blaw wur ain trumpets, & it seems, would rather like us to wheesht.

They also boast that they have a "broad range of events" and that it's "rare" for them to reject an event.

They have made an exception for our women-centric, woman-only organisation's event which highlights issues affecting women.

We asked Dundee Women's Festival which "values" they believe we hold which do not allign with theirs - we've received no response.

We asked Dundee Women's Festival for details of their Trustees - we've received no response.

We submitted an SAR - we've received no response.

So, yet again, we find ourselves in the position of having to, potentially, take legal action against an organisation for unlawfully discriminating against us.

We sent a letter to Dundee Women's Festival yesterday reminding them of their legal obligations & requesting that our event be included in both the online & printed programme.

We will, of course, keep you updated.

They don’t need to start being GC until they have their feet under the table. The TRAs got in by stealth

HoneyButterPopcorn · 13/01/2024 19:38

They ‘got in’ by pretending to be misunderstood, timid, in need of understanding and protection by ‘sisters’. Nah.

Trafficyriffic · 13/01/2024 20:17

Same as us then. Misunderstood, needing support, needing friends . Two can play at that

HoneyButterPopcorn · 13/01/2024 20:27

But funnily enough they always know who women are. So ignore them.

HoneyButterPopcorn · 13/01/2024 22:59

But Barry McGuigan has just tweeted his opinion ‘It’s completely unfair to allow men who have transitioned to compete against women in ANY Sport which involves a competition of physical strength and endurance.’

😁

It's just women speaking, that's all.

Hats off to women won’t wheesht.

IwantToRetire · 14/01/2024 00:45

Sorry haven't read thread, but in case it hasn't been said this has been there policy for years.

I am afraid it is more that we should just assume all these "women's" events are trans inclusive.

And those that aren't, probably dont want to publicly say it, so there is no way of knowing if there is one near by or even anywhere! Sad

like their street meetings? Which are good, I went to one in Ayr. I saw photos of www women in balaclavas and wondered if it might have been because of that? Maybe it was too procative a look for the festival?

I was at the www meet in Ayr, there were no women in balaclavas. Am I missing your point?

stealtheatingtunnocks · 14/01/2024 05:30

No, the balaclava pictures were online. It was a photo of the www women saying booze and fags and fun for breakfast. I wondered if I’d imagined if but I found it on Twitter, it’s not on the www account but I think a lot of the groups have the same women and that’s where I got muddled. Regardless, i wondered if a festival would refuse a women’s group because of images like this. https://x.com/gtfgla/status/1710979322272481588?s=46

Dundee, the town where the job of promoting female dignity during menstruation went a man! I wonder if this is Jason's new job?

Citygirlypop · 14/01/2024 07:05

That’s not women won’t wheesht, it’s a Glasgow group called GTF.

A contextual offer means a candidate doesn't have to get the same A-level grades/Scottish Highers as other applicants for the course. I think there is a lot of merit to considering student background, because I am not convinced someone who gets 3 grade A*s from a £40k a year fee-paying school is actually brighter than someone who gets grade AAB while living in a homeless hostel.

That said, I am by now convinced that the people who most effectively leverage contextual offers and other initiatives designed for the benefit of the disadvantaged are going to be... 18 year olds who went to £40k a year schools and still did badly in their A-levels.

Edited

Of course no young person would say they were trans (when they aren’t) to get into their preferred university.

That was a different group - not WWW

Yes, as I said I did see that when I looked. But some women are in both groups which is where my assumption came from and that’s my point - if you dress, or are thought to dress, as terrorists then is that why the www group has been turned down? My point is that if I muddled up www and GTF maybe the festival did too? I think the balaclava thing was meant to be a joke but the timing of it was crass.

Queenofseed · 14/01/2024 13:30

WWW and GTF are two completely different grassroots Womens groups. WWW have been touring Scotland with #LetWomenSpeak raising women's voices. Essential if we want more women in positions of power.
GTF (Glasgow Tactical Feminists) put on a number of women's events in 2023 from Living the Revolution with Dr Julia Long. Surrogacy - Women Speak up with Julie Bindel and Anna Zobnina, WomenWord featuring Magi Gibson, Jenny Lyndsay and Elaine Miller. Streetstalls, Marches, bookclubs and concession raising groups with general fun while working for women's rights and female empowerment

I was intrigued by Glasgow Tactical Feminists (GTF) choosing Buckfast for breakfast, and wondered if it might function as a muscle strengthener for their arm-wrestling contests, so I looked it up….

Apparently, according to that illustrious publication, the Guardian, it’s the drink of choice for Glaswegian hooligans.

Whereas in the rest of the world buckfast is drunk sedately, in Glasgow it’s become the drink of choice for “neds” – a peculiarly Scottish version of the hooligan. Because neds commit violent crimes and drink buckfast, there have been claims that the buckfast itself is responsible for crime. “The Buckie made me do it,” has become the classic defence in Glaswegian assault trials. Catherine Stihler, Labour MEP for Scotland, claimed that Buckfast “causes untold misery in communities across the country.” “

If you identify as transgender you can get a contextual offer for Dundee Uni....

Is this actually correct ? 😮

Sorry just googled and it is true (category 2 rather than 1 but still). Holy fuck - WHY?????????

SinnerBoy · 14/01/2024 14:55

Buckie was a ned's and jakey's drink decades before 2015, Guardian!

My guess is that they chose “Glasgow Tactical Feminists” precisely because of that acronym. It always makes me chuckle anyway. 😄

I also just saw this posted on Facebook from Fife. Once again...we can't have anything for women without including the dudes.
