Women who know biology are not welcome apparently. Lets hope they have the best lawyers because they are going to need them.

Women Won’t Wheesht

Unfortunately, yet again, women's voices are being unlawfully silenced.

This time by Dundee Women's Festival ( @dundeewomensfest ) who have rejected our event application to be included in the 2024 Festival because our organisation does not "allign with [the] Festival values"

A bit of background.
Dundee Women's Festival is a series of annual events in Dundee & takes place around IWD.

DWF is supported by DundeeCouncil & the UCD_ISSF (awarded to dundeeuni)

The Festival's criteria for inclusion is that events should be:

* Women centric

* Promoting/highlighting issues affecting women

* A woman only activity/delivered by a women-only organisation

* Promoting women achievers

Rather ironically the theme of this year's festival is

BLAW YER AIN TRUMPET because WEEMIN MAK IT HAPPEN

However, it seems Dundee Women's Festival do not want us to mak it happen, nor do they want us to blaw wur ain trumpets, & it seems, would rather like us to wheesht.

They also boast that they have a "broad range of events" and that it's "rare" for them to reject an event.

They have made an exception for our women-centric, woman-only organisation's event which highlights issues affecting women.

We asked Dundee Women's Festival which "values" they believe we hold which do not allign with theirs - we've received no response.

We asked Dundee Women's Festival for details of their Trustees - we've received no response.

We submitted an SAR - we've received no response.

So, yet again, we find ourselves in the position of having to, potentially, take legal action against an organisation for unlawfully discriminating against us.

We sent a letter to Dundee Women's Festival yesterday reminding them of their legal obligations & requesting that our event be included in both the online & printed programme.

We will, of course, keep you updated.

At some point the penny must surely drop that this is discriminatory and they are undermining their whole premis.

So it will just be full of odd men c

Is Dundee a location of High Strangeness ? A lot of nonsense seems to centre on the City of jam , jute and journalism.

BingIsIn · 13/01/2024 12:54

I'm following that because I'm going to WWW there with a friend.
Someone on Twitter has suggested booking into other events at the festival wearing our WWW merch which I'm liking.

FrancescaContini · 13/01/2024 12:56

Oh dear. Not a good look.

If you identify as transgender you can get a contextual offer for Dundee Uni....

Abhannmor · 13/01/2024 13:14

Hmm....Worth considering in these straitened times @StoorieHoose

I did dare DD to put it down on her application cos how can they prove it???

BingIsIn · 13/01/2024 13:31

I'd have told my DD to do it and claim she was non binary.

😦 Why does this merit a contextual offer?

EasternStandard · 13/01/2024 15:04

Best of luck to all those involved

PTSDBarbiegirl · 13/01/2024 15:07

Welcome to Dundee's Women's Festival (MRA's + be-penised 'women' only).

HoneyButterPopcorn · 13/01/2024 15:26

Oh dear god - remind me never to use a doctor, dentist, architect… who is an alumni from Dundee…

Abhannmor · 13/01/2024 15:28

Not sure what a contextual offer involves. Maynooth College uses to a the main Catholic seminary in Ireland. Grants are pretty crap here and you didn't need one to study in Maynooth if you had a vocation for the priest.

Quite a few young lads got a top class education there before realising they had 'lost their vocation.' This is similar?

Abhannmor · 13/01/2024 15:34

Argh ....Fat fingers. Sorry.
They realised they no longer had a vocation for the priesthood. After an agonising reappraisal of course!

IcakethereforeIam · 13/01/2024 17:03

There is a lemmings statue in Dundee, maybe it's an omen?

A contextual offer means a candidate doesn't have to get the same A-level grades/Scottish Highers as other applicants for the course. I think there is a lot of merit to considering student background, because I am not convinced someone who gets 3 grade A*s from a £40k a year fee-paying school is actually brighter than someone who gets grade AAB while living in a homeless hostel.

That said, I am by now convinced that the people who most effectively leverage contextual offers and other initiatives designed for the benefit of the disadvantaged are going to be... 18 year olds who went to £40k a year schools and still did badly in their A-levels.

HoneyButterPopcorn · 13/01/2024 17:08

When DS was applying for uni I saw contextual offers for kids at state school. When I think of my nieces state school I wonder how they square this (amazing facilities, very wealthy catchment area, great results). I don’t remember this when I was at my crappy high school or when my dad was at a really rough secondary in the arse end of Glasgow.

But say you are non binary and get rewarded? Not the same at all as being homeless or a child carer.

Abhannmor · 13/01/2024 18:22

Sigh. Same with all types of grants really . You've got to be pretty connected to even navigate the alphabet soup of ngos , quangos, arts councils and whatnot. Plays to the strengths of the bourgeoisie.

My daughter was a child carer for me, she got offered a scholarship for St Andrews through the Sutton Trust.
She turned it down and went to Glasgow Uni.
She went to one of the best State schools in Glasgow too.
I don't think its a bad system, but it very much needs tightening up.
Being "trans", is a nonsense.

If only Jordanhill were there rather than Glasgow. (I still recall the parody, Jargon Hall.)

Maybe the thing to do is to play the trans activists at their own game, get on the board and start to influence the direction of travel, they are looking for volunteers and board members. There must be some of the right sort of women in the area

ArabellaScott · 13/01/2024 19:20

It's a good idea, but if they've rejected an event because the women who organise it are gender critical I expect they'll discriminate against any gc women as trusteets, etc, too.
