Ancient Athenian citizens couldn't partake in the democratic policy making and voting process until they were 35. THIRTY-FIVE. People were thought to be insufficiently politically mature before that. That's where the Americans got the idea of 35 being the minimum age for being President.

Pretty crazy when you think about the difference in average life expectancy between then and now. And the fact that ancient Athenians were pretty much always at war. You were likely to die for the demos before you got the chance to vote in it.

Not saying that's an example to uphold. Athenian women couldn't vote either. But I think it's an interesting reminder that the idea of political competency has changed a lot throughout the ages.

Yes. Scotland. Where politicians believe that a murderer under 25 should be treated with care and caution because of not being fully of age and development to be responsible for their actions, but believes that children can consent to being sterilised.

Yes, it's led to some appalling leniency in sentencing. However, they are now revisiting, I believe, as it's not supposed to apply for rape/murder/serious crime.

I liked Mhairi Black when she first hit Parliament. She had seemed a breath of fresh air. But she seemed to turn her passion into zealotry at some point. I recall her at the special debate prompted by the petition, just talking absolute havers; no regard for accuracy or fact-checking, it seemed.

Anyway - I'm very sorry she has been exposed to all of the abuse she details here.

And it really seems she has had a terrible time at WM. She talks about panic buttons, a bomb bag over the letterbox, threats and abuse.

No excuse for any of that.

Yes, I hope that we can all agree that even the fudd-iest of all barely adult politicians does not deserve threats of violence or nasty emails or insults relating to anything irrelevant to her politics or general rubbishness at the job she was elected to do.

Luckily this is the SNP so we still have lots of on topic jokes about motorhomes, patios, pink leggings, recyclable bottles and invisible ferries.
