Hadn’t seen this interview posted as a thread so thought I’d post and link to it. It’s a great interview, Konstantin and Francis asked very insightful questions. The viewer comments are worth a read too.

Thanks for the link. Watching now.

I just finished listening to it. Legend.

Giggorata · 21/12/2023 17:28

Thank you for posting this. I have just watched it. What that man has been through, for standing up for principles… and it is still going on.

I am disgusted with his former friends and colleagues who have not only failed to support him, but actively distanced themselves.

Konstantin makes the excellent point that Linehan is being punished by his 'peers' for being first in that circle of people to call attention to these issues and for being right about the issues. And strangely, people are often more forgiving of people who are wrong about a difficult issue than they are of those who are correct about a difficult issue 🤷‍♀️

I also think there’s some level of cultural difference too - Linehan is Irish and we can be blunt when we’re speaking about things that we consider important. I think Linehan has transgressed norms of civility for his peer group in the highly middle class British TV and comedy circuit.

Great, got it lined up for tonight. I've got very mixed feelings about the Triggernometry guys but they can be very good, and are consistently sane on trans issues, since been enlightened by Kellie Jay!

GrandmaMazur · 21/12/2023 18:23

Thanks. It was nice to hear a comedian being so positive about Graham Linehan’s comedy writing.

RethinkingLife · 21/12/2023 18:31

It seems that it's an acknowledged issue and, unfortunately, it doesn't always redound to people's credit or reputation.

There's a phenomenon known as 'premature anti-[X]' and two of the best known instances are to have been a premature anti-fascist or a premature anti-Nazi.

‘Premature anti-fascist’ was the name by which the Lincoln Brigade veterans of the Spanish Civil War were known by the US Army in World War Two. This service and knowledge didn't distinguish them for a leadership position, it was counted as demerit on their record.

In John Platts-Mills' autobiography (barrister and post-war Labour MP), he recalls being ‘excluded from any form of normal war service by the stupidities of Bevin’. He noted: ‘An anti-Nazi history, was of no help and to have been prematurely anti-Nazi was a positive hindrance … we were condemned throughout most of the 1930s on the grounds that only Communists were against the Nazis and this hostility carried over into the war years.’

Commenting on (British?) veterans of the Spanish Civil War, Platts-Mills wrote that ‘many lefties who had served in Spain were called up or were accepted when they volunteered. Several more got in only after a tussle with the authorities.’

On a separate note, I saw Speed the other day and it reminded me of all the scenes in the Father Ted parody with the milk float bomb (rather than the other way round).

Another Christmas Day shouting at the internet awaits I suspect. Little turkey dinner for one maybe.

I'm sorry you don't have anyone to share your Christmas Day with, and that you only have a small bird. Watch something else, maybe? Love Actually is on Netflix.

Zebracat · 22/12/2023 21:25

Poor @BeatyBlack , maybe we could all chip in and send them an FWR hamper, tunnocks and so on.

Ereshkigalangcleg · 22/12/2023 22:03

Yes. Does Beaty Know It's Christmas At All Xmas Sad

Back to Glinner: my heart broke a little to hear he hid his car in case it got repossessed

Lottapianos · 23/12/2023 08:50

'Back to Glinner: my heart broke a little to hear he hid his car in case it got repossessed'

Same here. As Konstantin said, the Father Ted musical would have been a licence to print money. Glinner could have been a multi-millionaire by now. Instead, he's penniless and as he repeatedly said, for what reason? He's not a Nazi, he doesn't want anyone harmed (quite the opposite), he has never tried to incite violence. He's told the truth, and refused to parrot nonsense, and his whole life has been trashed for it

I have very mixed feelings about his colleagues who he named in the interim, like Graham Norton, Arthur Matthews and Neil Hannon. On the one hand, I can see how they don't want their lovely careers trashed by openly supporting him. On the other hand, I can understand why Glinner feels so let down and betrayed by them

MsGoodenough · 23/12/2023 09:06

I am a massive Divine Comedy fan and really upset that Neil Hannon has let Glinner down so badly. He's now in the ascendant writing the music for the Wonka movie and Glinner is in the gutter.

I also think Glinner has suffered through being male. He's been thrown out of his own circles but can't fully enter terf circles and enjoy the cameraderie that offers. He seems so isolated and lonely.

BonfireLady · 23/12/2023 09:21

Just watched this now.

He's fantastic in long form. It was great to hear him expanding on some of the things he said in the book and covering more besides. I hope that those of his critics who were friends of his take the time to listen to him talk like this at some point - maybe their curiosity will take them there one day, now that the issues (in particular women's sports and the mental and physical health of children) are getting in to such sharp focus in the public discourse. For any that do, his short form tweets (and possibly the conversations they previously had with him) will make so much more sense to them. Yes, he's sometimes vulgar and crass. Yes, he sometimes sounds angry. But this is a big and important issue, covering so many different angles. If they can swallow their pride, they'll realise that they were simply slower than him to piece it all together and far too quick to prioritise their public image over being brave enough to call out a scandal.

Although it's covered in the book, the discussion and centring around the werewolves and villagers game was particularly interesting as a conversation.

WarriorN · 23/12/2023 09:39

Yes! I want to learn more about that.

The media black out approach is so easy to spot once it's pointed out. (Denton's.)

Stella o Malley said in the documentary about the making of her documentary "trans kids," that the producers had never had such a wall of silence from anyone. They mentioned that even people involved the Israeli - Palestinian issue would converse.

Villagetoraiseachild · 23/12/2023 12:18

Thanks Op for posting this, it was a great and sometimes uncomfortable watch.
All hail to the man. He has been super smart and super principled, a kryptonite combination at blasting through the intense murkiness of these times.

Villagetoraiseachild · 23/12/2023 12:19

What was the title of the book he recommended pls?

nauticant · 23/12/2023 12:25

If you're asking about Graham Linehan's book, it's Tough Crowd.

Villagetoraiseachild · 23/12/2023 12:30

Ah thanks for that Nauticant.
I was after the title of Graham's personal book recommendation at the end of the interview. I will go back and look later.

nauticant · 23/12/2023 12:37

I should have paid more attention.

Just finished listening. Wow, powerful stuff and so many things so clearly articulated.

If Glinner is reading, you are an absolute legend.

I’ve found it on kindle so I’m going to give it a read - from Graham and Konstantin’s description it sounds fascinating.
