I’d be horrified if the Scottish govt appeals this comprehensive judgement - pure wasting taxpayers’ money during a cost of living crisis - but I wouldn’t be surprised if they appeal; they live in a bubble where (mis)spending thousands of pounds doesn’t get you sacked.

So unelected? That is, no citizen actually voted for these people but they have the authority and people take them seriously to comment on national matters? That is absolutely crazy.

They're not exactly unelected, but the system is such that it's virtually impossible to vote someone out. Which is what bothers me - brings to mind Tony Benn's 5 questions:

  • What power have you got?
• Where did you get it from? • In whose interests do you use it? • To whom are you accountable? • How do we get rid of you?

I cannot describe how galling it is to see Education, Health, Infrastructure crumble while these smug faced idiots continue to mouth absurd platitudes about progress and diversity and human rights.

ArthurbellaScott · 08/12/2023 14:41

To be clear, I care very much about diversity and human rights (I don't believe in the myth of 'progress'), but these words have been repurposed. They don't mean 'human' rights anymore, they mean rights for the right people. They don't mean 'diversity' anymore, they mean more power for the right people.

Scottish Court: "Block is lawful"
Humza Yousuf: "It's a dark day for devolution"

Hmm mate, a SCOTTISH court said it was lawful. The SCOTTISH court said it was in line with SCOTTISH law.

Not an English court or the Supreme Court. A SCOTTISH court.

In other words they agree that the SCOTTISH GOVERNMENT tried to over step it's power and act beyond the limits of it's jurisdiction as a devolved power. Not Westminster. The Scottish Government.

Let's just stress this: the Scottish government tried to overreach on its power and make decisions beyond its borders. That's not devolution mate. That's a attempted power grab.

ArthurbellaScott · 08/12/2023 14:54

I assume somebody somewhere is still taken in by this nonsense?

nauticant · 08/12/2023 15:35

An interesting précis of the judgment:

It isn't over yet..

I suspect not, but the dam has most definitely cracked.

Floisme · 08/12/2023 15:58

Over or not, it's delightful news and I'm especially relieved for posters in Scotland, congratulations.

GailBlancheViola · 08/12/2023 16:01

Excellent result.

SinnerBoy · 08/12/2023 16:01

I hadn't cottoned on to the fact that the decision was made in a Scottish court, so thanks to the PP who mentioned it. It's a very important aspect of the case, because it makes it difficult for Humdinger and Co to claim that it was all down to Evil Rishi in Westminstershire.

GrouchyKiwi · 08/12/2023 16:06

It also helps that Lady Haldane presided as she has ruled in favour of ScotGov on related matters. Harder to claim bias in that case.

SirChenjins · 08/12/2023 16:15

Great news from the Court of Session. If Youseless pursues an appeal then he’s an even bigger fool than he appears, but Patrick and Lorna will point him in the direction they want him to go I’m sure.

ArthurbellaScott · 08/12/2023 17:10

'they have 21 days in which to decide whether to appeal.'

Chersfrozenface · 08/12/2023 17:19

The fact that this is a decision by a Scottish court no doubt underlies the SNPs plans for a compliant judiciary.

Humza's doing the whole 'ooh, this just shows we need independence' (you'd shit yourself if that actually happened, pal) and this is the best reply I've seen so far -

'Dunno, mate, not sure getting the law embarrassingly wrong in an attempt to relegate women to second class citizens within their own sex class demonstrates you need more power.'

Thank goodness. Though I'm sure we haven't heard the last of this.

DuesToTheDirt · 08/12/2023 18:21

I used to think that the SNP wanted independence. I used to vote for them and I voted yes in the referendum.

Same here. I have voted Green too. I wanted social justice, which I thought was more likely with independence, and to make the environment #1 priority. Silly me.

Yep, me too.

I will never vote Green again under any circumstances.

I will probably never vote yes again in an Independence referendum unless there's massive change. It's not safe for women.

SinnerBoy · 08/12/2023 18:27

I voted Lib-Dem and they went into coalition with the Tories, much to my dismay.
