Closet TERFs

Saw something on Twitter earlier suggesting that Lineker must be a closet TERF given that he hasn't made any overtly TWAW type comments.

Given that it's easy peasy to flaunt one's gender ideology credentials in the current climate, one can't help but wonder if those who could but aren't are actually in the sane GC camp, but timid/terrified/being gagged by editors/agents.

On which basis - which names would you add to the list?

I'll start.... Caitlin Moran. Conspicuously silent....

Caitlin has never disappointed me. I always thought she was a phoney. Aisling Bea can do one as well. Bit of a 'shleeveen ' detector when it comes to fellow Irish. Norton ditto.

WorriedMutha · 05/12/2023 17:29

My respect will be spread pretty thin when the reckoning comes. What is journalism if not being willing to speak the truth. If you are just going to parrot fashionable doctrine uncritically, you are just a content creator. Give me Sonia Sodha any day.

Abhannmor · 05/12/2023 17:58

Sonia , Kenan Malik , Suzanne Moore.

Literally years since I read Owen Jones or Zoe Williams. The relief.

KatBurglar · 05/12/2023 18:13

Maitlis is a possibility. Justin Webb is a TERF.

Moran is a back-stabbing Pick Me girl. Bitterly disappointed.

lordloveadog · 05/12/2023 18:17

Suzanne Moore is by no means closeted.

Abhannmor · 05/12/2023 18:32

No she isn't. I just wanted to sing her praises there.

everybluesock · 05/12/2023 18:50

Adele (she criticised gender neutral awards)
Victoria CM?
I agree re Kathryn Ryan
Jo Brand?
Sarah Millican

CorruptedCauldron · 05/12/2023 18:53

Davina has recommended the Witch Trials of JK Rowling. She and Michael Douglas discussed it on their podcast.

Katherine Ryan

Too close to the LGBT fanbase and community to outwardly comment.

I stopped listening to her podcast when she gave her “thoughts” on inclusion in sports. She thought we should just be kind, create different size categories , be kind some more.
Such a disappointment

It’s from 2018 but she seems quite firm in her opinion.

Also nope to Jess Philips @StrictlyAFemaleFemale . She amended the counting dead women list to include Brianna Grey and hasn’t said a thing about women needing female only refuges despite her supposed work on domestic violence and has done nothing to defend Rosie Duffield

I disagree, Jess spoke at the debate on the EA2010 and was very clear sex matters.

WRT Brianna, Jess named her separately to draw a distinction.

CountZacular · 06/12/2023 02:54

Didn’t Jess come out this summer in support of single sex spaces? I feel like she is a TERF and has been for a while, but she’s not going to do more than dip a toe in until she’s sure talking about it will benefit her.

lemmein · 06/12/2023 03:34

Shelagh Fogarty!

stillholly · 06/12/2023 06:43

@Nagado that's interesting.

I wonder if she has had a change of heart as she doesn't appear to spout this anymore.

Lorraine Kelly??

HermioneWeasley · 06/12/2023 06:58

@still Lorraine Kelly is full on stunning and brave and be kind

@Ereshkigalangcleg yes - I suspect you're right. But wouldn't it be wonderful to see more of them growing a spine and piping up about it now and then?

A sweepstake on who will be next to break ranks would be fun.....

It speaks volumes of the impact of cancel culture. Someone who earns a living in the public forum will be very wary of cutting off their income source by speaking the truth out loud.

PermanentTemporary · 06/12/2023 07:08

Emily Maitlis provided a quote for the cover of Time to Think. I think that was quite a big public commitment.

Ironically given my view on the binary nature of sex... I won't put people into 2 groups on this. Everyone in the public eye is walking a razor blade on this issue. And I've seen the transcript of the parliamentary meeting where Jess Phillips was slapped down for pretty much assuming that places where vulnerable women sleep would remain single sex. It wasn't pretty. But I believe it probably remains her view.

Anyone who hints as CM did that there might be some difference between women and transwomen gets verbally punched. I'm not going to do the same from the GC side.

FarEast · 06/12/2023 07:22

There’s a fascinating legal issues podcast called Double Jeopardy. The two men who run it (former DPP and another senior barrister) are pretty TERFY. One of their early guests was Professor Kathleen Stock.

Oh, no, I started watching her (fiction) comedy series (not the stand up.)

In it she's a potter from home making mugs in the shape of women with boobs etc. then she does a line with penises. It was too gushy to be irony or critical. So I don't think so. Though I can't see how she can be open about it.

I didn't find it as good as her stand up.

HagoftheNorth · 06/12/2023 09:24

As an addition, it would be really interesting to see which sports stars are TWAW. Tom Daley obviously, but it’s not a crowded field - can we assume the others have a grasp of the physical reality of their sexed bodies?

Thank you. She's a posho pickme who larps as a feminist and WC woman.

Moving away from the (understandable) white Brit woman bias on this thread, I'd be confident in saying that a fair chunk if not the majority of Black American female rappers are terfy as hell. Go on Lipstick Alley and you'll see that Black women are fed up of their womanhood being co-opted by the TWAW brigade (unsurprisingly, as it's shamefully racist).

Black female rappers have to content against a hugely misogynistic industry and many of them (Lil Kim, Mia X, Gangsta Boo (RIP), La Chat, Young MA, Scar Lip) have experienced pretty horrendous SA themselves. They know what a woman is, because women from poorer socio-economic backgrounds are more likely to be victims of misogynistic violence.

Dontgivemeplants · 08/12/2023 08:16

It's amazing how few people are on this list. So many people have kept their mouths shut. They're all terfs and moral cowards

Oh yes Aisling Bea is definitely TWAW camp, wonder about Sharon Horgan then?
