Mixed High school changing rooms

Lisa Keogh on twitter/X has written that a Scottish High school she visited last week has mixed Sex changing rooms for PE and swimming.
If that’s true it’s horrific, not to mention illegal - why aren’t the parents and students kicking up a huge fuss about it?
Most Girls don’t want to strip off in front of other Girls, let alone pubescent Boys.
How would they be able to stop pictures being taken ? why wouldn’t OFSTED be all over this safeguarding failure?

OP posts:
Hoardasurass · 03/12/2023 17:36

Unfortunately there is no ofsted in Scotland and we don't have a legal right to single sex changing or toilet facilities the way English schools do. The snp has completely drank the coolade and actively promotes this crap. We are fighting this but its an uphill battle

Rightsraptor · 03/12/2023 17:38

That's so shocking, OP. I can't begin to imagine being in that position. I know I'd definitely be skiving off games.

HereForTheFreeLunch · 04/12/2023 08:28

Men really don't care, do they. (And a numbe of women)
Any idiot could tell it's a recipe for disaster for girls.
All this focus on women's and girl's sport from the Olympics, the This girl can... etc etc.. so much thought into getting girls into sport early and then they come up with this!
Girls really don't matter to these people

Sirzy · 04/12/2023 08:38

That’s awful, I don’t get why anyone would think it’s a good idea.

i only have one son, he doesn’t actually get changed with everyone at all, but if his school tried anything like that I would be at the front of the protests against it.

FrancescaContini · 04/12/2023 08:41

This is atrocious. I’d remove my daughter from the school immediately. WTH, Scotland??

Gasp0deTheW0nderD0g · 04/12/2023 08:47

I saw this on X earlier. She claims the male teacher showing them round said that a teacher supervises the changing room to make sure there are no incidents. As dozens were pointing out, this makes it worse, not better. A teacher of either sex watching children of the opposite sex changing is an incident.

Rightsraptor · 04/12/2023 09:02

I agree that any teacher supervising makes it worse. But it's not necessarily about 'incidents' in the changing room, it's about the erasure of boundaries, as we all know, and the behaviour this utter lack of respect can lead to outside the changing room, outside the school, just everywhere.

It's sick.

I wonder if Humza Yousaf will be happy if his daughter is in such a position in ten years' time?

Igmum · 04/12/2023 09:04

This is dreadful. I don't think any of the teenagers, boys or girls, that I know would be comfortable with this. Deeply harmful

PomegranateOfPersephone · 04/12/2023 09:07

If I lived in Scotland I’d be sending my daughters to Girls’ schools!

Sparehair · 04/12/2023 09:10

Just to be clear, is this a changing room divided into changing cubicles or is it like the changing rooms at my dc’s school which is just one big room with lockers and pegs? I find it hard to believe that it’s the latter. No parent is going to accept that.

I understand there are no single sex state schools in Scotland.

Oh wow, I didn’t know that! That really limits choices for parents who want to protect their children. Home education, private if you can afford it or move to England where we have single sex state schools, I don’t know if they have any in Wales or Northern Ireland.

Does the difference matter? Neither situation would be single sex.

I’m sure the Scottish FM will find a way to avoid this for his own children.

Lots in NI, judging by Derry Girls.

Going to go out on a limb here and mention that in the (European) country where I live, mixed changing rooms are the norm everywhere - at schools, gyms and leisure centres. There are always plenty of private cubicles and no-one seems to find it difficult. It also makes things much easier for families.

To me personally, yes. If it’s full floor to ceiling individual or small group cubicles with teacher supervision outside the cubicles then I’d be ok with that as my teen dc use those types of facilities at swimming pools fairly regularly. Our local flume park just has those. I wouldn’t love it but obviously that is a huge difference vs a room with boys and girls getting changed in full view of each other.

The UK really is an outlier when it comes to these things, but just doesn't realise how normal this and nudity are in most European countries.

PersonWithInternalGonads · 04/12/2023 11:31

There won't be private changing cubicles in a school though. It will be a pegs and benches situation with fuck all privacy.

How do you know?

Froodwithatowel · 04/12/2023 11:45

If you were going to set out to design a system that was guaranteed to end up in a safeguarding mess, it would look a lot like this. Insanity.

Looking at the SNP (with Wales galloping along behind them) gives a good idea of what England under Labour would look like. Ideological zealotry over any basic sense or regard, even for children.

Would you mind saying which country? It often happens that people say stuff like this on here and then people native to the country supply a more complete and accurate picture, but that can’t happen if the country isn’t named.

EarthyMangold · 04/12/2023 12:06

@DarkDayforMN Slovenia. My husband is native, our children were born here and currently attend school here. I have seen a lot of schools (I work as a language teaching assistant). Some older schools have open plan single sex changing rooms (like classic UK schools) but newer ones tend to have mixed changing areas with a lot of private cubicles.
And I have never seen a public swimming pool here that didn't have mixed changing facilities - again, always featuring lots of private cubicles. Given the number of threads on here about the issues faced by parents wanting to accompany their children in changing rooms, this seems like a good solution.

gotomomo · 04/12/2023 12:19

Depends if there are cubicles, I wouldn't care if it's mixed sex if there's cubicles for privacy

curaçao · 04/12/2023 12:31

They are toilets not changing rooms

I lived in Portugal for 16 years and never once encountered a mixed sex changing room. There may be certain countries where this is the case (I would imagine it to be more common in some of the Nordic countries) but I wouldn't say the UK is an outlier.
