Saying the quiet part out loud….

Michael Cashman has announced he is incensed by the right wing wanting safeguarding in schools and wants to push back against it:

"We must push back against safeguarding in schools"
???? Can they even hear themselves?

BlackeyedSusan · 02/12/2023 00:45

OMG.

WoW!

Who benefits from lack of safeguarding in schools ? It isn't the kids.

This is what comes of spending too much time speaking only to those who mirror your own beliefs; it means you forget to drop the in-group jargon when you address a wider audience. That's what happened here.

Cashman (the fool) evidently thinks "child safeguarding" is shorthand for "transphobic bigotry using children's safety and security as a flimsy pretext" and he is in the habit of using it that way in his own social circles. That tweet will be a hit with everyone who already agrees with his stance that a group of mostly female campaigners (who are often specifically mocked for being middle-aged, i.e. old enough to have children and grandchildren and to be emotionally invested in said small people's welfare) don't care about... children's welfare.

However, he didn't send that message to his mates via whatsapp. He sent it to a public audience, who haven't all received the trans activist memo that "children's safeguarding" means "bigot". Grin

It reminds me of the time I saw someone - in the Guardian comments section, if it's relevant - embark on an online tirade about the "tyranny of evidence-based medicine" driving alternative treatments out of the health and wellbeing marketplace/NHS.

You're not supposed to accidentally admit or even imply that you don't think there's evidence that X or Y alternative treatments works!

Operation ‘Let them Speak’ in action.

Helleofabore · 02/12/2023 06:06

Also, have they all forgotten all the other gender identities again in their focus on just the three most common sex based genders? They talk about authenticity while forgetting all the other genders including gender fluid.

Plus the fact that there is that study that shows some children expect to change gender was if two or three times in their life? Sure, they are authentic to themselves in that very moment. Yet what about ‘lock in’? What about kids feeling they have to commit when they just want to experiment?

Froodwithatowel · 02/12/2023 07:23

Well you can see his point. Safeguarding children is getting really bloody inconvenient to the adults involved in this political movement. Once you let people start caring about that kind of thing their agenda goes completely south.

Trying to call safeguarding children a 'transphobic dogwhistle' is a bit desperate, but ok, bring on the sunlight and lets unpick why exactly safeguarding needs to be removed from children like rights have been removed from women and who benefits, and how .

Because as pp says, it is not any child at all.

Did cashman not read that tweet before posting and think, actually that makes me sound a bit iffy

Cashman knows he's definitely on The Right Side Of History, and therefore anything he (and his fellow RSOHers) do/say must be Righteous. It also therefore follows that anybody who doesn't slavishly agree with the self-identified TRSOHers, must be Bad People who are on The Wrong Side Of History.

You see?

What happened actually has a name, it's called "context collapse".

TheDogthatDug · 02/12/2023 10:08

Oof, that ratio.

MrsOvertonsWindow · 02/12/2023 10:35

I do hope the press pick this up - Cashman needs his views on safeguarding shared very widely.

It seems he has a patronage. I wonder if there is anything in PT writings and interviews that might hint at reasons for removing safeguarding?

Peter "Middle Aged Men Raping Nine Year Old Boys is Lovely" Tatchell?

I've just asked Cashman why he doesn't want children safeguarded from abusers. I hope he doesn't like being called Mick.

Shocked. I. Say. Shocked.

Honestly have his brains fallen out?

How you can oppose safeguarding in schools and think you are on the right side is beyond me.

That's amazing. I had no idea there was a term for it!

nauticant · 02/12/2023 14:19

I love finding the appropriate word or term too:

@SaffronSpice The debate is on BBC Parliament now. Lord Cashman has spoken, now the Earl of Leicester is speaking.
