Toilets without urinals vs Men's

I was recently in the university bar at the University I work at. Went to the toilet. My choices were "Toilets without urinals" or "Men's". Funny isn't it how it's always the women's one that is changed.

The sign for "Toilets without urinals" was a printed out A4 stuck on with blutac so I removed and binned it to reveal the "Women's" sign.

The same university had converted all the disabled toilets into all gender toilets so disable people have fewer facilities than previously.

I am so fed up with this nonsense.

Good on you for removing the sign.
It's not necessary for the sign to be there, we're grown ups so we know what toilet to use.

Unfortunately, not everyone does.

No. Everybody does know. Some people choose to use the wrong toilet.

That is true if it says men/women. Anything else is confusing. Men are less likely to spend time trying to decipher it.

I was thinking about this a while back and a crazy thought popped into my head, based on the fact that it tends to always be women with the longer queue in very busy times. Why not be inclusive in this way with two sets of toilets:

  1. Women only toilets
  2. Everyone toilets

Now I know some women will just use men's toilets anyways, but a lot of people are sticklers for following rules and so an explicit invitation to say that its okay will surely make some feel better and extra useful facilities can be installed as needed to accommodate all needs.

Inclusive can work many different ways, but there seems to be a fixation on one version. Not all are as unproblematic as the above. On the subject of urinals, perhaps they can be put into the dustbin of history in most cases? If I ruled the world everyone with a penis would be socialised to sit. Its more hygienic and, personally speaking I find it a more pleasurable way to do the job

Except men also deserve to have access to single sex facilities when using toilets.

Women's, men's and everyone would be the best option. And yes, everyone should sit, including the women who hover, drip and don't clean up after themselves.

From what I've observed, the decent men will head for the men's toilets, even if labelled in this bizarre way, which leaves the cubicles only even less safe for woman as only the boundary crossers will make a beeline for them.

Ereshkigalangcleg · 01/12/2023 22:37

They really depend on women saying/doing nothing. We need to all buy shewees and start going into the urinals en masse.^^

I think women are going to have to do this. No one cares if only the service humans are affected.

That is true. The boundary crossers and the oblivious will use the women's.

I was in UCD last week and was shocked but very pleased to see a Ladies sign on the toilets.
However there was performative pronouning! It was a schools debating competition overseen by college students.
One young woman gave her name and pronouns, then the next young womandid the same. The first 2 boys copied them but interestingly a very confident 16 yo boy stated him name only...it hung for a few seconds and the next 5 boys stated their names only.

UCD is very captured.

I do think a lot of the performative pronouning is just about fitting in. Most of them don't believe in it but go along so as not to be the odd one out.

Yes, I think thr first boy only did it to fit in. I am so disappointed in the young women. My sons tell me it is mainly the girls pushing this shit.

It was so unnecessary too. No one used anyone's pronouns after that.

There’s a university-owned theatre where I live. Mostly it’s student productions in term and town group productions when the students aren’t there.

For many years the loos for the audience were ladies, gents and one disabled. Then the signs were changed to “cubicles,” “cubicles with urinals” and the disabled one.

Now they have changed back. I think there were complaints.

(That’s the intention of the new labels but can’t remember them exactly.)

Was the first speaker asked to give her pronouns, or did she just do it?

I see you're in Ireland, but I could say similar in NW England re disabled toilets now being universal non-binary.

There's various toilet options in the SU. I was impressed they had specifically Male and Female labelled toilets. There's no arguing with that.

I was in a college bar last term , and these were on the outer doors into the loos.

Click on the pictures to see the notices.

That gives me the absolute rage

The outer door to the bar was on a coded lock, too, so I don’t know why they needed the “bar users only” sign on the non-men’s loo.

Plus security on the gates means it’s difficult to get into the college at all if you’re not a member, or a student presumably.

Except our EDI policies state that people can use the toilet that matches their identity, which unfortunately means the signs mean nothing.

She just did it, she instigated it and suggested the others do it too, if they wanted too.

Which of course puts pressure on everyone else.

Same in my nephew and niece's school. From what I gather, the girls are being almost bullied/brainwashed into the 'be kind, use pronouns' BS but the boys are left to do their own thing.

Only boys with a close trans male friend seem to be using pronouns.

NPET · 04/10/2024 17:51

That's appalling. One reason why girls/young women in schools and colleges NEED our own spaces is to get away from the boys pestering us. Quite apart from all the things we need to do for which we don't want pwp (people-with-peens) around!
Actually that example is PARTICULARLY awful - the men have their own space!
At least let me into the "toilets with urinals", so that I can embarrass the boys! (Sorry, last point was a joke, but it should surely be allowed.)
