Toilets without urinals vs Men's

OchonAgusOchonOh · 01/12/2023 16:39

I was recently in the university bar at the University I work at. Went to the toilet. My choices were "Toilets without urinals" or "Men's". Funny isn't it how it's always the women's one that is changed.

The sign for "Toilets without urinals" was a printed out A4 stuck on with blutac so I removed and binned it to reveal the "Women's" sign.

The same university had converted all the disabled toilets into all gender toilets so disable people have fewer facilities than previously.

I am so fed up with this nonsense.

Well done for removing that sign. Don't let them grind you down - there's an army of women and men challenging all this creepy nonsense.

User1775 · 01/12/2023 16:48

I always go and ask for the womens then say I need a single sex women's toilet for cultural and personal reasons and make it all mega super awkward.

Good idea although I know the answer I would get. The SU is very captured.

I was in an otherwise empty SU bar a few months back. Two loos side by side, one with a 'men' sign on the door, one with nothing but you could see where the 'women' sign had been removed.

Thankfully I had some suitable stickers to rectify the situation about my person.

SinnerBoy · 01/12/2023 17:55

Isn't removing dedicated disabled facilities a breach of law?

They are all gender plus disabled.

My understanding is they must provide facilities suitable for disabled people but they are not required to be exclusive to them.

I must acquire some stickers. Where did you get yours?

I was in a resraurant in Glasgow which was similar. The two doors said "urinals and cubicles" and "cubicles". So men had free choice of where to go, women the cubicles only - and the risk of there being blokes in there too.

So progressive.

MissPollysFitDolly · 01/12/2023 18:15

They really depend on women saying/doing nothing. We need to all buy shewees and start going into the urinals en masse.

Good idea. Or just using the cubicles in the men's

It’s similar at the Old Vic theatre in London. They did a fundraise to increase the number of women’s toilets, did up the existing facilities and relabelled them as “cubicles” and “cubicles + urinals”. So increased the number of toilets available to men, while providing precisely zero toilets exclusively for women. https://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-7532761/amp/Londons-historic-Old-Vic-theatre-gender-neutral-toilet-storm.html

London's historic Old Vic theatre is in gender-neutral toilet storm

The historic Old Vic theatre in Waterloo, London had previously promised to double the number of women's toilets to help tackle the industry-wide problem of long queues for female loos.

Good idea in theory but too gross in practice. I want those stickers!

Few years back, I'd have thought that the Old Vic was a NewsThump or The Onion story. Now it's an everyday thing.

SudokuMania · 01/12/2023 20:45

I was at a cafe that was two old shops knocked into one - so they had two toilets. One 'cubicles' one 'cubicle and urinal'.
All the guys in the cubicles section used that - fair enough, they probably didn't notice there was another toilet.
I was in the half of the cafe with 'cubicle and urinal' so I thought I'd check it out.
You had to walk past the urinal to get to the cubicle - so just the old 'men's' set up. I walked out, then thought fuck it, and used it. Would have played dumb if a man came in.
It was actually really clean - probably as a lot of men were using the other toilet.
It was near a uni. I was there for the uni open day. Pleasantly surprised there was not a pronoun in sight at the open day and all toilets on campus were men/women.

An unusual university these days.

And yes, I think you're right. Men won't notice that they are using women's toilets so will just go with whatever is most convenient.

Good on you for removing the sign.
It's not necessary for the sign to be there, we're grown ups so we know what toilet to use.

SudokuMania · 01/12/2023 20:57

"An unusual university these days."

I've been to 5 uni open days and haven't come across any pronouns and always found the 'women' or female toilet. Really surprised.

GreekDogRescue · 01/12/2023 20:59

Well done op.
direct action is the way to go

Rightsraptor · 01/12/2023 21:02

@OchonAgusOchonOh - I've had them for a while now (don't get out much!) but most of my stickers come from the Adult Human Female webstore. I'll see if I can post a pic of one - it has no way of telling where it's from as far as I can see.

Really?

Mind you, you might think the same if you went around the one I work at. Toilets, bar the once upon disabled and now all gender, are all mens/womens. The sign in the bar was on an A4 sheet, so presumably the work of an individual. Depending on the courses you are interested in, you may encounter very little in the way of gender identity. I have no trans students at all in the department I work in and I have quite large numbers of students. I teach a topic in another, more artsy, department and there are multiples.

The reality is our EDI policy is riddled with inaccurate interpretations of the law and has presumably been informed by TENI, we have a goal of at least 60% of staff doing LGBTQI+ training but no similar goals re race or disability. The EDI metrics gather includes gender identity but not sex. In certain departments lecturers are required to introduce themselves using "preferred pronouns" at the first lecture of the semester.

Thanks. Unfortunately no use to me as they refer to UK legislation and I'm in Ireland. However, I'll see can I find some that don't.
