I stopped watching Last Week tonight after an appalling episode about trans kids/bathroom bills a few years ago, but dh was watching this latest one about abortion and i couldn't believe my ears...it is actually about women. He says the words woman and mother repeatedly. Amazing

*I still think John Oliver is a smug, right on, right side of history dude bro and I find his deliberate lack of understanding about women's concerns repulsive.

Wow JKR's reply to him is so worth reading.

"Cultural elites" is the right term for the people imposing this. You can see why it became so important for trans activism to capture the arts and media so early on.

I love scrolling down the replies to JKR's threads because she's got an (immeasurably more intelligent) answer to every attempt at a put down. It's so fucking cathartic watching a woman refuse to be cowed. True gender non conformity.

JK Rowling is amazing. In a world full of disappointing high-profile individuals she makes me believe that there are some ethical human beings.

Well he wouldn’t have been worried about not referring to men as well would be - because that wiuld be trans men - ie females. And no one ever worries about trans inclusive language for men —FUNNY THST

Although everything she writes is on the money Outer, this has to be one of her best. It's utterly watertight, confident, compassionate and honest. The criticisms I've seen on X from the anti-JKR types look more imbecilic and pointless even than usual.

Be interesting to see Oliver try and wriggle out of this one. If Hollywood's industry title has run with it like this - and not in as much the usual, spiteful way that comes down completely on his side - then it isn't something he can feasibly ignore.

JKR is completely right about him using this as a punchline

“Finally, if you genuinely want to address the biggest concern for most girls who play high school sports, you’d be less worried about this and more about the creepy assistant volleyball coach who keeps liking their posts on fucking Instagram.”

Sexual predation, wow that's so funny 🤢

Of course the girls can block the guy on Instagram or complain to the school. What can they do if he decides he's actually a girl himself and joins them in the changing room?

LWT takes a social/political/economic topic (random example: the historical barriers to Black home ownership) and does a deep dive. Not funny, but interesting.

So it's disappointing that Oliver is a committed genderologist, because his team could do such a great number on it. What a waste!

"The “Harry Potter” author — who has come under fire in recent years for her views on trans women that many perceive as being anti-trans — is making headlines for her response to a recent segment of Oliver’s HBO talk show “Last Week Tonight.”"

I copied this from the Variety thread linked to above by @Brewdug. It's the "many perceive" that struck me. It's almost like Variety are saying 'some do, we don't'. At the very least, they are being ambiguous. This is new, pretty sure they'd have just written 'who has come under fire in recent years for her transphobic views' .

I can't watch him anymore after one of his unfunny rants about poor 'trans kids' andtheir desperately needed affirmative healthcare. and how mean and bigoted women and girls are for not wanting to share toilets or compete in sports against men.

He's actually like this about pretty much everything.

Edit - oh darn, this is an old post - and I even commented on it before.
