Boots menopause advice for "people with a vagina"

Givemepickles · 08/11/2023 09:26

On their menopause support page, where apparently they want to normalise the menopause...

https://www.boots.com/health-pharmacy/womenshealth/menopause-support

"The menopause is a natural process which people with a vagina go through as they get older however, in some cases, is medically induced. As oestrogen levels start to drop, periods become less frequent and eventually stop altogether. For some, their periods stop quickly, but for others, it can take a few months or a few years. Everyone is different.

Menopause signs and symptoms are different for everyone and usually begin between the ages of 45 and 55, with the average age for people in the UK being 51. Whilst some choose to seek treatment plans from their GP, others will look for other solutions to help manage signs & symptoms."

I'm so sick of this. I'm not defined by having a vagina! I am a woman. Piss off Boots.

i think you’ve got to have a golden bridge, otherwise why would they bother changing.
it’s the usual,
outsource thinking to stonewall,
get a certificate
diversity done,
hopefully they’ll do some critical thinking from now on , but it’s definitely a start in the right direction for Boots.
This is so much more positive results than previous complaints I’ve made.
the usual response is to minimise, no one else minds etc.
Boots have actually changed. Hopefully the CEIOis on a peaking journey,

They may have changed it under pressure, but the fact remains that they did it in the first place and that all the people who you'd assume would have to sign these things off thought 'All righty, dehumanising half the population and being medically and statistically incorrect,is absolutely fine. The important thing is that we've pandered to a tiny vocal percentage and Stonewall will give us a gold star on our sticker chart for doing so'.
Boots can kiss goodbye to any future business from me.
.

Yes. I'd want to see that whole section overhauled, and an apology and explanation of what the fuck they were up to before buying again.

Alternatives to No7 moisturiser, anyone?

FrancescaContini · 09/11/2023 08:30

Nivea works just as well.

Mothew · 09/11/2023 08:37

Alternatives to No7 moisturiser, anyone?

Aldi moisturisers are excellent. No 7 brings me out in a rash so I never buy it anyway.
I can't understand how Boots are still trading. Overpriced products and the Spanish inquisition if you want to buy paracetamol.

TheShellBeach · 09/11/2023 08:38

Astral is cheap and effective as a moisturiser.
Joanna Lumley uses it.

ArthurbellaScott · 09/11/2023 08:40

Thanks all! If there's a moisturiser that can give me the poise of Joanna Lumley I'm all over it.

Grin

I use it and people often say I've got lovely skin.

Not so much poise or slenderness though.

Ah. Is it high carb perhaps?

Worth mentioning that they are excluding people with lower literacy levels, those with learning disabilities and also people with English as a second language. Not very inclusive, is it?

But who cares about them, when the main concern is to placate the right people?

Startingagainandagain · 09/11/2023 09:13

This is so bizarre...'people with a vagina'?

Women literally reduced to a single body part and one associated with sex and pleasuring men of course.

The menopause is is when periods stop due to lower hormone levels (or when a woman has a hysterectomy/oophorectomy or things like cancer treatments).

Nothing to do with vaginas...

They could have gone with women and transmen. Nobody else is going to go through menopause...

@Ibizafun

''As if there weren't enough real problems in the world to worry about right now. If it wasn't ridiculous it would be funny.''

It is a real problem now because it is the systematic erasure of the word 'woman' and even the suggestion that you cannot use the words 'woman' or 'female' because you are going to offend someone and that this someone has more rights than us women...

And it is asking women to have their experience ignored and erased so that a few people who transition are not offended.

I have no issues whatsoever with people transitioning but we thought too hard for women's rights (and are still fighting) to see this kind of nonsense happening all over the place and to again let men dictate what it means to be a woman.

I’ve emailed the ceo and will go to Superdrug in future.
So “woman” has become a bad word !
How utterly offensive this crap is !

boudiccathecat · 09/11/2023 09:40

I believe Superdrug are worse

Mothew · 08/11/2023 19:37

Me too, but I think Boots need to know just how many women object to this.

You're right and it seems like there are other such issues across the Boots site so it's still worth doing.

A. Vogel Prostasan Saw Palmetto Soft Capsules - 30 - Boots

Funnily enough, men are allowed to be men, not people with prostates. It's all just misogyny.

I thought that this was a Vogon poem😂😂

WomenShouldStillWinWomensSports · 09/11/2023 09:47

The worst thing about that original message from Boots is how nicely it shows that they don't even believe their own twaddle. If they did, they wouldn't have gone on to only talk about age-related menopause, they would have also talked about the menopause induced by surgical removal of ovaries, i.e. in full hysterectomy for example in gender reassignment surgery (I don't have to hand the stats on how many transmen keep their ovaries).

So they're trying to show they're down with the kids but this is very likely to piss off the TRAs as well because it's wrong and exclusionary from their point of view as well as ours.

Boots got this wrong for everyone.

I'm so done with them. The box ticking idiots would have better spent their equality and diversity money on a working website.

thebellagio · 09/11/2023 10:02

They could have gone with women and transmen. Nobody else is going to go through menopause.

This. I don't get why some companies make life so hard for them, and how their "inclusive" language is completely "exclusionary" to others.

I was reading something the other day (I can't remember what it was about) and there was a disclaimer line that literally said "typically, this is something that affects women, non-binary and transmen. For ease of messaging, throughout the rest of this article, we'll remain using the word woman"

Thats literally all they have to do - that way, it recognises those who are transitioning, without being offensive to anyone else. Its inclusive and it simplifies the messages for people who may not have great reading skills/speak another language

Why do companies make life so difficult for themselves?

qwertyuiopasdfgh · 09/11/2023 10:22

If it's anything like my company, then a bunch of people pleasers, yes-men, and no actual values. Their values are anyone else's values that shouts loud enough.

boudiccathecat · 09/11/2023 10:26

Time to start shouting

I can't imagine anyone would have a problem with this, except perhaps TRAs. Elegant solution.

ArthurbellaScott · 09/11/2023 11:22

That works. I suspect ad people would shy away from using such clear language though. How the fuck they arrived at 'people with a vagina' is mystifying.

RapidOnsetGenderCritic · 09/11/2023 11:25

madeinmanc · 09/11/2023 07:51

It conjures up a vision of giant vulvas on legs parading around, faceless genitalia. And it's painful and hurtful because deep down I suspect it's the truth of how men really perceive women.

I can only speak for myself, but no, that is not how I perceive women. There are certainly men who do have no respect for women though.

thebellagio · 09/11/2023 11:26

Its so daft. I'm a copywriter so it REALLY fucking irritates me to see how brands are getting themselves tied up in knots over something that's actually really simple.

Effective copywriting is about knowing your audience demographics and talking directly to them - this stuff that is being published is just insane. Its biologically incorrect, it's either written by a male writer (who doesn't understand the human body) or its been changed via automation (e.g. a quick find/replace)

itsanopefromme · 09/11/2023 11:38

It does say women:

WHAT IS MENOPAUSE?
Here at Boots, we are on a mission to normalise the menopause. We want to be there to support you through your journey; from perimenopause to when you are post-menopausal.
The menopause is a natural process which women go through as they get older however, in some cases, is medically induced. As oestrogen levels start to drop, periods become less frequent and eventually stop altogether. For some, their periods stop quickly, but for others, it can take a few months or a few years. Everyone is different.

Have they changed it or is the vagina part further into the page?
