Boots menopause advice for "people with a vagina"

On their menopause support page, where apparently they want to normalise the menopause...

https://www.boots.com/health-pharmacy/womenshealth/menopause-support

"The menopause is a natural process which people with a vagina go through as they get older however, in some cases, is medically induced. As oestrogen levels start to drop, periods become less frequent and eventually stop altogether. For some, their periods stop quickly, but for others, it can take a few months or a few years. Everyone is different.

Menopause signs and symptoms are different for everyone and usually begin between the ages of 45 and 55, with the average age for people in the UK being 51. Whilst some choose to seek treatment plans from their GP, others will look for other solutions to help manage signs & symptoms."

I'm so sick of this. I'm not defined by having a vagina! I am a woman. Piss off Boots.

WHAT IS MENOPAUSE?
Here at Boots, we are on a mission to normalise the menopause. We want to be there to support you through your journey; from perimenopause to when you are post-menopausal.

Will the useless self congratulatory fluff pieces masquerading as health information never end?

NORMALISE???? Was this (mis)translated from a foreign language? What does this even mean? The menopause is already normal for 51% of the population. What a vapid and useless statement.

THROUGH YOUR JOURNEY?? This is misleading. The menopause isn't a journey. You never get THROUGH it. It never ends.

The person who wrote this hasn't a clue about the subject. As with many women's health issues, everything that is known about the menopause can be written on a postcard. No amount of word salad can cover for the lack of solid information.

Why would there even be this new type of class 'women' if it has zero to do with being female? We might as well have special demographic groups by star signs or whether we are introverts or extroverts, our favourite colours, and so on. Replacing the class which gives birth to all new humans with a category on the basis of hair length, makeup use, pink-loving, dress-wearing etc is inane.

I had a look at the men's health section to see if they were being consistent. Under 'erectile dysfunction' they don't call men 'people with a penis' just 'people' then go on to use the word 'men' at the end. So double standards as usual.

They used the word men quite a lot in that article... it's always the word woman that's changed.

Rough template letter, feel free to add/adjust/fix:

I write to note the erasure of the word 'woman' from your website, particularly in the Menopause section:

'The menopause is a natural process which people with a vagina go through as they get older'

Reducing women to their vagina is offensive, dehumanising and nonsensical.

In addition, this is neither 'inclusive' nor accurate.

If a trans identifying male has a surgically constructed 'vagina', he will still not go through menopause. Women who have had a hysteroctomy often still retain a vagina, but will not go through menopause. The scientifically accurate term would be 'people with ovaries'. This would still be dehumanising and offensive, but at least it wouldn't be so misleading.

In addition, women with low literacy levels or English as a second language will struggle to understand these phrases.

The word 'woman' is necessary. Attempts to erase or avoid it are pointless, misleading, offensive and misogynistic. Women are half the population, and only women go through experiences that pertain to having a female body.

Thanks for this, I'll also point out how they have no problem using the word men and man in the men's sections

orchardsquare · 10/11/2023 08:23

They've changed the men's erectile dysfunction section too! As before it definitely said 'people' throughout except one mention of men at the end.

@toomanytrees - It's all about marketing. Boots want to "normalise the menopause" and support people with vaginas on their "journey" because they want to flog the 354 products they identify as menopause related products. I'm not exaggerating: 354.

It conjures up a vision of giant vulvas on legs parading around, faceless genitalia. And it's painful and hurtful because deep down I suspect it's the truth of how men really perceive women.

You’re right. It’s sort of funny when someone tangled in a web of lies (TWAW etc) accidentally blurts out the truth. It’s a male-centred movement so woman = the parts of interest to men.

Leavingonapetjlane · 11/11/2023 01:26

I've been following this thread from the start, and have made a complaint to the boots feedback page. Just had a little look at the health club page, and although heartened to see there is now a "woman's health" tab, am dismayed to see that the pregnancy page makes no mention of a woman. What total BS. Am not buying from boots again.

What? Women going through the menopause can find testosterone helpful, why shouldn't it be legal?

They could have gone with women and transmen. Nobody else is going to go through menopause.

This. I don't get why some companies make life so hard for them, and how their "inclusive" language is completely "exclusionary" to others.

I was reading something the other day (I can't remember what it was about) and there was a disclaimer line that literally said "typically, this is something that affects women, non-binary and transmen. For ease of messaging, throughout the rest of this article, we'll remain using the word woman"

Thats literally all they have to do - that way, it recognises those who are transitioning, without being offensive to anyone else. Its inclusive and it simplifies the messages for people who may not have great reading skills/speak another language

Why do companies make life so difficult for themselves?

Did you complain, and suggest this, or are they reading here 👀

NOTE: This article/page uses the terms ‘male/man/men’ and/or ‘female/woman/women’. Please note, this is in reference to the sex assigned at birth.

Still 😖 at ’assigned’

No I didn’t complain but they probably searched here. If they suddenly had a deluge of complains they likely googled why and this would have come up.

its all so ridiculous. With a short disclaimer they can easily automate it so it’s on every women’s health page as part of a header/footer without having to make horrendous clunky text changes. But no, they have to make life difficult for themselves

BIWI · 11/11/2023 07:53

@Leavingonapetjlane I don't mind that, to be honest, as at least it's factual and truthful! It's the use of horrible, clunky (and unnecessary) terms such as 'people with vaginas' that's the real issue, because that's replacing the word woman. A paragraph without the word is not the issue when the detail in it is true.

Leavingonapetjlane · 11/11/2023 08:05

@BIWI I get your point, although it really irritates me that they have gone to such lengths to NOT use the word woman. Having a baby for me was such a big part of my being a woman. How do you feel about the use of the term 'down there' on the intimate health page? 😂 (again they use that awful disclaimer about sex being assigned at birth - shocking that a health care provider should use such scientifically incorrect language).

BIWI · 11/11/2023 08:20

Yes, I hate 'down below'! When I was in hospital after one of my DC was born, it really grated that the midwives used that term as well. But I suppose they're trying to use language that isn't too scientific, that people might not understand?

CorruptedCauldron · 11/11/2023 10:35

Sex is observed and recorded at birth, not assigned. Sex is not a Sorting Hat.

YouJustDoYou · 12/11/2023 20:41

Please be aware of one of their recent facebook posts about "Lockeroom talk" about "men's health" - FUCKING HYPOCRITES!!!!!!!!!!!!

YouJustDoYou · 12/11/2023 20:45

They also mention "men's health/men's this/that blah blah blah all over their facebook page, but refuse to use the word woman. Disgusting.
