The Reading University one is something to behold, the way they are all falling over themselves to be woke 🤦‍♀️

ChishiyaBat · 29/10/2023 17:04

Those two boys who quick as a flash said no and that there are only 2 genders gave me hope though @Catsanfan

OP posts:
Catsanfan · 29/10/2023 17:54

@ChishiyaBat true, although I think they were the only ones who gave a flat out yes it is gay

ChishiyaBat · 29/10/2023 18:00

@Catsanfan the rest ummed and ahhed and didn't know what to say, it's a sad state of affairs.

Genuine question as I'm trying to learn more. I've seen several posts saying you can be a man or a woman and that's it.... what about intersex people? Surely no one can pretend this doesn't exist... so maybe you can't be just a man or a woman biologically? Genuinely curious about how this all works.

asterel · 30/10/2023 00:42

@AuDHD4Me “Intersex” is a bit of a misnomer and no longer used in the medical literature — instead the term DSD, “Disorder of sexual development” (or sometimes “Difference in sexual development”) is now used. This is because “intersex” people are actually men or women in whom sexual characteristics haven’t developed properly, either because of a genetic or chromosomal error, such as an extra sex chromosome or a switch on the SRY gene, or some kind of other developmental error, which has caused sex development to be atypical. Some of these chromosomal or genetic errors are syndromes, like Kleinefelter’s, Turner’s, Swyer’s or others, which have other developmental problems as well, not just in sex development. Some developmental DSDs can be almost completely corrected by surgery. Others mean the body hasn’t developed some reproductive structures it would normally have for the person’s chromosomal makeup; or the body doesn’t respond to the “right” sex hormone. But in all of these cases, the person isn’t “somewhere in the middle”, but a man or woman who hasn’t developed typically. There are no “true hermaphrodites” who have both sets of functioning genitals or are genuinely “in between”.

PatatiPatatras · 30/10/2023 00:48

I'm going to assume this is a question in good faith -

To be intersex, or to have a dsd, the body needs to have had a reproductive function it was aiming for which either suffered an arrested development or over stimulation.

I.e. People who are intersex are either male or female and then their sexual function develops or suffers distortion.

There is no third gamete and intersex humans do not spontaneously change from one gamete production to another. Neither do they produce varying viable gametes.

HoppingPavlova · 30/10/2023 01:05

Do any of you have university students as children? Would be interesting to hear what they make of this

Yes, I have some. They well understand that men cannot menstruate, although you would need to say ‘have periods’ for them to answer. However, they have been well trained by uni’s that the correct answer is ‘yes, of course’, otherwise they will be identified as transphobic, student services will get involved etc. Exactly the same for mine now working. Corporations have mandatory training that says you must believe this or you are transphobic and have no place in their organisation, so while not believing it at all, they know the ‘right’ answer they must give.

ACGTHelix · 30/10/2023 01:19

As i understand the science, menstruation is a biological process unique to individuals assigned female at birth. Menstruation is a part of the menstrual cycle, which is regulated by hormonal changes in the female reproductive system. It involves the shedding of the uterine lining in the absence of pregnancy, typically occurring monthly.

Menstruation is associated with the release of an egg from the ovaries (ovulation) and the preparation of the uterus for a potential pregnancy. If fertilization does not occur, the uterine lining breaks down and is expelled from the body through the vagina, resulting in menstruation.

If however my understanding of science is incorrect, then im willing to learn the "correct" science

Terfosaurus · 30/10/2023 01:24

I'm actually shocked at how many of them don't seem to know what menstruation means, and that because men can have mood changes that's the same thing!

Intersex is an abnormality. Sometimes it is abnormal presenting genitals but the person has either xx chromosomes making them genetically female or xy chromosomes making them genetically male. Sometimes the abnormality is chromosomal and you have someone who is xxy for example. Or xo or xxx (I googled that to double check)

Trans people as a group have to the best of my knowledge no chromosomal abnormality that has resulted in them being trans.

Intersex is an abnormality. It does not mean that there are more than 2 sexes. It means that sometimes things go wrong during foetal development.

Sometimes babies are born with missing limbs or extra limbs.

Does this mean human beings limbs exist on a spectrum and we are designed to have between zero and ten + limbs? No. It means sometimes there are issues during foetal development.

There are conjoined twins. Does this mean the range of the number of heads humans are designed to have is on a spectrum? No. It means that sometimes things go wrong during foetal development.

People exist that are different. For a variety of reasons. Those differences do not transform the biology of humans into a spectrum that developmentally and biologically has evolved to intentionally (evolutionarily speaking) include them.

It doesn't mean people with physical differences matter less or are less deserving in any way. It simply means that they don't form part of what is the intended biological template of the species.

I've got an extra nipple. Lots of people have. It's quite common.

Nipples aren't on a spectrum.

There's two nipples and there's developmental error that has resulted in some people having extra nipples.

Thanks for your very clear explanation although the thirdnipplephobic bit at the end rather lets you down 😉 triple nipple rights now!

The way to control the masses is to keep them ignorant and strenuously discourage critical thinking.

WaterThyme · 30/10/2023 07:09

If many people are confused by the word “menstruate” it adds strength to the point that using them as descriptors in medical situations instead of plain language like “women “ will mystify those people.

Thank you all for the replies and the information. Another question. Is it possible that there is a neurological aspect of this though?

IncomingTraffic · 30/10/2023 09:01

The idea of ‘lady brain’ is neurological nonsense.

Thank you all for the replies and the information. Another question. Is it possible that there is a neurological aspect of this though?

There are minor physical differences between women's and men's brains. Mens brains are slightly larger for example.

However, to the best of my knowledge there have been no examinations of trans people that have confirmed they have the brain of someone of the opposite sex.

It falls into five main categories.

Gender dysphoria.

Autogynephilia.

Struggling with neurodivergence.

Pretending for attention because it's the current 'cool' thing (tends to be kids)

Taking advantage of the situation because they're a pervert. (Tends to be grown men who do not have the first two options who just get off on forcing their way into women's spaces and who are taking advantage of the current situation to assault girls and women.)

It's worth noting also that a large number of teens who say they are trans are neurodivergent and not enough attention is being paid to this fact and what it means.

I have autism and when I was young it was hell. I knew something was 'wrong' with me but I didn't know what. (I wasn't diagnosed until I was an adult) I knew I was different. I couldn't understand my peers or relate to them. I desperately wanted answers. I can see clearly that had this trans issue been such a big thing when I was a struggling, undiagnosed autistic teen I may very well have latched onto it in desperation.

@ACGTHelix thank you for your clear explanation of menstruation. I would hope everyone learns something along those lines in school so am shocked the university students interviewed seem not to know.
in your explanation, I wish you referred simply to “women” or “identified female at birth” rather than “assigned female at birth”. No one is “assigned” a sex — the phrase suggests there is something random or subjective in the designation. Babies are identified as male or female through an objective process of either noting the presence or absence of a penis or by genetic testing. There is nothing subjective about the identification.

Based on this posters previous posts I think they do everything via chat GPT

yes of course men can menstruate, that's why the word starts with 'men' duhhh

JellySaurus · 30/10/2023 23:46

Oh, like menopause is when men stop for a moment.

I agree! But more than that, I'm infuriated. Maybe these silly young women are blessed with easy periods. Simply no acknowledgement of the excruciating and debilitating pain, nausea and diarrhea that many women and girls suffer. What next, pregnancy and childbirth being waved away as just food cravings?
