I don't think it it so much a case of "sympathy" as one of offering this type of individual therapy and support in managing their compulsions in a socially acceptable manner. They also need to understand that sanctions will rapidly escalate if they do not control their behaviour.

Carrot and stick, in other words. I think you need both to deliver positive change.

You change laws, the criminal justice system, education system, the health system, etc. until it's mandated and then it's compelled acceptance. The impact on society and others is irrelevant.

I think that's how it goes.

You're right there - I think that's what I find so horribly familiar to what we see bleated at women who are concerned about privacy/dignity/safety -

The Guardian has a track record of pushing alternative sexual practices and fetish as mainstream practices...

For a while they were promoting polyamory and open relationships, I suppose weird fetishes are right up their street.

This isn't about someone enjoying their fetish in private/their own home though which would be perfectly fine, it is about someone harassing other people in public places which is completely inappropriate.

I hope this man gets the mental health support he needs but the priority should be to make sure they no longer are loose in the community and scaring people.

And yes there is no way a woman would do this. Again it is just the Guardian being their usual ridiculous self...

It is funny because I am a liberal lefty but I absolutely hate the Guardian and what it stands for these days.

Very good point. I think he must have been targeting women and lone/vulnerable people on purpose.

It's very obvious in that video, isn't it? He is using the fear of women (because let's face it, the men in that video were giving the usual male response of mockery) to excite him sexually. We know these types of behaviour often escalate. Was happens when scaring women and rubbing his groin against the ground no longer does it for him?

I'm not a particularly timid person, but I've noticed I'm far less keen on going out after dark since lockdown. This type of behaviour only serves to further shrink women's worlds. They need to absolutely throw the book at him.

As a local can confirm he generally targeted young couples as in teenage couples or women on their own. funnily enough not large men or groups of men

even the teenagers who recorded the video said they would have reacted differently if they had been on their own

This man not only terrified the people he inflicted himself on when he was out and about. I’d imagine there were people less inclined to go out or allow their children and teenagers out in the evening and on their own because of his repeated forays outside. Or old people frightened of bumping into him. It must have been awful living in that area. Imagine having been a victim of violence or SA and then encountering that? It can be made to sound pathetic and humorous but many would have been horrified and repulsed.

I wonder if there was some sort of sadomasochistic aspect where they wanted to be discovered and then beaten up. If that footage was real, those teenagers could have got nasty - but it sounds like they were probably pissed or stoned (or it was their mate and it was fake) or maybe they weren’t the type of teenagers who were wanting to draw attention to what they were up to in a park at night?

Either way, I hope the police are checking the hard drive of this gimp’s computer and looking into his history full stop.

At a guess, because they require consent and the following of rules. And the person taking the 'role' of the victim negotiates, consents, and have a safeword.

What he's getting off on would be impeded by this kind of mutuality, sense of responsibility and social contract with others.

My take on this, would be that they need a prison sentence, definitely a psych assessment, and potentially to be (forced) in some kind of pathway under sex offender specialists.

I don't think I'm a liberal on this, but I do think it's a combined medical/criminal justice area, and psychological treatments may be appropriate (don't know the evidence base for treating gimps) or the use of drugs maybe.

As I have said, I blame all this on Pulp Fiction.
