R4 “Breast Medicine” features Jordan Gray (MtF) discussing “boob job”

I am really shocked. A round table discussion including a woman who has had breast cancer and two medics/scientists discussing updates in treatment also includes a transwoman discussing the joys of “top surgery” to create breasts. The transwoman happily mentioned “for full disclosure”, in what sounds like a masculine voice, only having top surgery as that is what the world sees — but no intention to remove anything “down below”. The female guests in the show and the members of the audience all seemed to support this statement.
i am astounded. Why can’t a discussions about breast cancer just include women who have had breast cancer, or men who have had it, rather than include someone who used medical resources to create “boobs”.

If you remember, Jordan got Jordan's minuscule penis out on live TV and pretended to play the piano with it, to an audience who weren't expecting it.

Inamuddle36 · 24/10/2023 18:59

In case others had not heard of Jordan Gray, here are two excerpts from Wikipedia:
”Gray realised she was transgender while chopping wood in Sweden,[4] having moved there after becoming engaged to a Swedish woman,[5] and came out while accepting a trophy for best original artist at the Essex Entertainment awards while dressed as a cat.”
“Her 2022 appearance on Friday Night Live, where she performed a song about her experiences as a transgender woman, stripped naked, and played the piano with her penis, attracted praise and controversy.”

Wait what, they put the piano cock man on a serious discussion about breast health? This is absurd.

Ereshkigalangcleg · 24/10/2023 19:01

It just feels like everything about women and girls is a misogynistic free for all. We are the punchline of the biggest fucking joke in history.

100%. It’s sickening.

Rightsraptor · 24/10/2023 19:09

Jordan was 'chopping wood'? Are we being euphemistic here?

HolaPepper · 24/10/2023 19:11

I have just listened back, thanks OP. I'm sad that after the brief intro, the first discussion was with Jordan and his comic contribution.

I found the whole thing disappointing to be honest.

I am a breast cancer patient. I found the actual
Doctors contributions fairly valuable as they were factual but with a comic delivery.

The first question:
Presenter: Jordan what is the best medicine?
Jordan: the humble boob job.

Fuck off. It's humiliating to hear this discussed so flippantly by someone who has had state of the art breast surgery for fun.

Jordan also thinks that only brain surgery is life saving. Breast surgery couldn't possibly be life saving, therefore anyone waiting for breast surgery (you know, to remove those non life threatening cancer cells) should suck it up.

fedupandstuck · 24/10/2023 19:14

It sounds very jarring to have a comedian on trying to be comedic about a serious topic when the other three guests are talking about cutting edge anti-cancer treatments. Gray has no shame though and presumably is thrilled to be on such a panel, being given the validation and attention that Gray clearly relishes.

Indulging in wishful thinking is more like it. Axe accidents can be lifestyle changing.

ArabellaScott · 24/10/2023 19:25

This is gross. I'm so sorry, HolaPepper.

IcakethereforeIam · 24/10/2023 19:51

There was a me me meeeeee article by him in yesterday's Guardian. I think he must be trying to drum up interest for something. He must have been asked to come on though, I doubt he was randomly ringing R4 of the off chance.

Inamuddle36 · 24/10/2023 19:53

I am glad I am not alone in being shocked by the programme. I thought I had misheard at first and went on-line to check the subject of the programme and the panelists. The premise itself is odd: “Kiri Pritchard-McLean assembles a panel of scientific experts and a fellow comedian and challenges them to make a case for what they think is “the best medicine”. Why is a comedian even necessary as host or guest when the programme is addressing a serious topic?

i was even more disconcerted when I realised the panelist’s and audience didn’t seem to be at all nonplused about Jordan’s comments — as if it all is normalised now. (“It” being men with breasts AND penises; “women” with penises; “women” who sound and, judging by the photo in the link below, look like men can be on a panel of “women” discussing breast health….)

I believe Jordan has a tour coming up and will be keen to promote Jordanself. A poster of Jordan has appeared in my local theatre.

MrsOvertonsWindow · 24/10/2023 20:13

Tis the new roolz. Nothing about women (even breast cancer survivors) without wedging in men who claim to be women. 😑
Disrespectful but par for the course from the captured BBC.

AnneWhittle · 24/10/2023 20:18

I'm going to complain, it is so disrespectful
can anyone direct me to the lyrics of his song where he says something about being a better woman than any of us could be?

My mistake, tour is nearly finished.

The London gig is at the Bloomsbury Theatre (capacity 535) this Friday, tickets still available. Last year's was the London Palladium (capacity 2,000+) and ended up on seat-filler sites for a tenner.

AthenaMinerva · 24/10/2023 20:24

It's in the R4 comedy slot. It's supposed to be a comedy programme hence having a comedian on. I can't comment on whether it's funny or not (I'm not especially inclined to listen) but it is not intended to be a serious discussion about breast cancer. The programme is called 'Best Medicine' as in "laughter is the best medicine" and this episode is called 'Breast Medicine' - not breast cancer. Absolutely make a complaint if you want to but don't get angry that a comedy programme had a comedian on it.

IcakethereforeIam · 24/10/2023 20:35

Seems like a shit premise for a comedy programme. My mum was killed by a brain haemorrhage, have they done those yet! Oh, how I'll laugh. Probably until I cry.

AthenaMinerva · 24/10/2023 20:39

Well, yes - I do dislike this idea of 'comedifying' every topic. I'm not a fan of The Infinite Monkey Cage for the same reason. You're Dead to Me has grown on me but I have to like the comedian's style to want to listen.

AnneWhittle · 24/10/2023 20:40

Obviously you haven't listened to the programme. Its in the comedy slot yes, but features genuine researchers and clinicians talking on their areas of expertise (light heartedly its true) and also a comedian who will talk on the same subject, each person advocates for their point of view being 'the best medicine' for the condition featured. Its a crap idea for a comedy show but has some interesting content and usually some mildly amusing remarks mostly from the comedian.

This was a whole different kettle of fish where a man was given airtime to talk about the construction of his artificial breasts, which he referred to as 'boobs' throughout, as if this was a genuine clinical procedure.

Many if not most of the people listening will have lost someone to breast cancer or supported a survivor, this was offensive in the extreme.

Inamuddle36 · 24/10/2023 20:41

Fair point, @AthenaMinerva . I am not familiar with the show, nor with the presenter. Still think it is inappropriate to have someone who has had a “boob job” on a panel with someone who has had breast cancer surgery, as if equating the medical needs of both.

OP posts:
CorruptedCauldron · 24/10/2023 20:43

Even if this was meant to be a light-hearted show, there’s nothing funny about breast cancer. Discussing a boob job for a euphoric transwoman while talking to cancer survivors strikes me as pretty crass. Not to mention triggering for anyone tuning in who may be affected by breast cancer.

Melroses · 24/10/2023 20:55

We've come a long way from ISIHAC 😬

Oh, I agree. Sounds like it wasn't very well thought through. And I'm definitely not going to listen as the idea of a "comedian" who plays the piano with their penis does not appeal.

Just continuing the long R4 tradition of producing some really crap comedy shows to counterbalance the fab ones such as ISIHAC and Cabin Pressure.
