Book sales figures & Tough Crowd

Anyone in publishing here, with access to Bookscan? I trust Popbitch usually, but am very, very surprised to see their sales figures of 390 for Tough Crowd. I’m wondering if someone’s sent them sales figures for an odd edition (large print, audio) rather than hardback numbers, but does anyone with actual access to Bookscan have info?

It’s possible sales are that bad, but as I say, I would be surprised.

(Bookscan is across all publishers and should include Amazon, supermarkets, independent booksellers, and the publisher’s own sales.)

I see my post from the first page was reported and deleted. Ah well, it was funny in my head, and at least some people got the joke. I meant no disrespect!

To be fair to The Right Side of History, we all know that there are only 6⭐︎ people (sockpuppeting very busily) on The Wrong Side of History. So it stands to reason that there are only 6⭐︎ books sold.

⭐︎Not 6.

Thanks for the reminder to buy mine! On kindle (I live overseas) so no idea who does or doesn't count it as a sale, but looking forward to it as on an overnight flight tonight.

Grabbed Simon Edge's 'The End of the World is Flat' whilst I was at it. 😁

Needanewnamebeingwatched · 21/10/2023 09:31

I pre ordered from amazon and it arrived on Thursday 🥰

Waitwhat23 · 21/10/2023 10:14

Somewhat amusing article by Pink News, who focus on the Amazon aspect and quickly gloss over the direct sales from publisher aspect (which even they admit, if the numbers from the publisher are correct (and they contacted Simon Edge directly) were roughly 3,900.

(Apologies for the Pink News link btw)

Graham Linehan's memoir has failed to reach Amazon's top 1000 bestsellers in its first month on the platform.

I want this now! Is it best to order from Eye Books direct?

BezMills · 21/10/2023 10:22

Or your Local Book Shop

Norma27 · 21/10/2023 10:37

I’m another who bought direct from the publisher to get a signed copy.
Just to make Monty happy, I will also buy it on kindle today, and audio and paperback when those are available.

Anothernewname123 · 21/10/2023 10:45

@rhywlodes it says Amazon EU S.a.r.L is the seller

RoyalCorgi · 21/10/2023 11:03

I bought directly from the publisher, which is something I almost never do. As a PP said, I did it partly because I wanted a signed copy, partly because I wanted to support a small, independent publisher brave enough to publish Linehan (I imagine he tried and failed to get interest from other publishers, though I haven't seen that confirmed anywhere).

Francesgumm · 21/10/2023 12:37

I bought mine from Amazon (pre-ordered) and it arrived yesterday - was a lovely surprise!

lechiffre55 · 21/10/2023 12:40

A book that doesn't sell well results in lots of them being available with discount stickers on the cover to try and shift them.
A book that's become difficult to get hold of e.g. out of stock is a book that's selling well.
But I assume that some people are identifying as people who think Graham's book isn't selling well despite the evidence.

porridgecake · 21/10/2023 12:48

The publisher mentioned in my email update on my order that they had a lot of opposition within the industry. Make of that what you will.

Shortpoet · 21/10/2023 12:55

Me too. GL signed 3500 copies and I pre-order one of those direct from the publisher.

UtopiaPlanitia · 21/10/2023 13:02

When I look at the hardcover format on Amazon, it gives the following encouraging info regarding the book’s ranking:

  • 233 in Books
  • 14 in The Performing Arts
  • 26 in Actors and Entertainers Biographies
  • 26 in Theatre & Performance Artists Biographies

The Kindle edition is:

  • 484 in Kindle Store
  • 1 in Biographies & Memoirs of Journalists
  • 2 in Biographies of Comedians
  • 3 in Memoirs
AlexaAdventuress · 21/10/2023 13:58

Yes, and as I said before, considering he's up against literary giants like Britney Spears and Trinny Woodall, it's not a bad showing at all.

rhywlodes · 21/10/2023 15:21

Ok, @Anothernewname123

So on Amazon they are being sold (cheaper of course 🙄)via Amazon itself, as well as via Eye Books as an Amazon seller.

I've found it all very confusing but hope the publicity shifts more copies.
When I read it my overwhelming thought was that Glinner has had his say in print at last which won't disappear as easily as social media.

Received mine last week from Eye Books - my order No was 8000+

I wouldn't share your order number on here. Beware of random interns or employees who may link your order number/email address/name on here.

(Some years ago there was an intern working for MN who doxxed lots of GC posters).

ThisIsMyGCname · 21/10/2023 20:28

My Amazon copy arrived today.

Anothernewname123 · 23/10/2023 00:00

Mine arrived too!
Will be tucking in tomorrow AM.

TommyNever · 23/10/2023 04:34

I ordered from Booktopia in Australia, hasn't arrived yet. Apparently it initially sold out but they have new stock arriving by the end of this month.

Stephannee · 23/10/2023 20:59

WorriedMutha · 20/10/2023 09:32

Graham Linehan has already refuted this on Twitter. The first print run of 10,000 copies has sold out and more are on order.
Popbitch have a strange algorithm issue.

Are you sure the "10,000" figure isn't just the books that have been sold to bookshops, and not actual customers?

CervixSampler · 23/10/2023 21:02

My library isn't stocking this so I'll be ordering a copy and shall store it on my GC bookshelf once I've read it.
